HEHL1N. Feb. S Trading on the Pourse today waa quiet and prices were Irregular, American lower. NEAV YORK. Feb. 3 -The dull and heavy tone of the stock market today was due largely to suspended Interest on the part of speculators and Investors alike. The weakness of the early part of the ses sion was clearly due to activity on the rrnrt nf the nrofcspionnl element on tna short side of the market, and this Belling whs partly covered ty repurchases oe fore the end of tha sslnn. Heynnd this demand from the uncovered short Inter est there was little sign of any absorptive. power. The rtiseemlnrHInn of rumors in a rainer reckless fashion was an Incident of the day, which was laid at the door of the tjearish activities. Anonymous teiepnona meosaRe to bank depositors to awaken their h ty and to prompt withdrawals was ',-ature that came Into notice on Patu y and prompted some Indignant dlsgusfclons. The successful closing up last week of four smaller banks seems to have suggested this motive of attark, but the publication of the matter was reporteu today to. have robbed it of Its powers for harm. Very bold and damaging assertions -were circulated today concerning the finances of the Rock Islsnd and iransverse tina in msnv of the securities of the company. Including the stocks both of the parent and the subsidiary companies and the col lateral bonds secured by old Rock Island stock and those secured by St. Louis and San Francisco stock. The mortgage bond of the companies In the system were but slightly affected. Officials of the com pany and bankers associated in Its finan cial operations denied tint there was any ground for the rumors of embarrassment. The unsupported condition of the securi ties, however, had a depressing effect on the whole list. The financial effect of the Portuguese tragedy seemed to le confined largely to the Paris bourse and had little ref le t'on here. There was. In fact, some pun es of stocks here for foreign account. rt was not enough of this to prevent a sl arp reaction In the foreign exchange market, which ouleted the discussion of a possi ble early outward movement of gold. A shipment of lino.ooO in gold to Argentina reported late on Saturday waa explained as a special transaction. A loss by the banks on Saturday of f?,l9.i on sub treasury operations was caused by a pay ment to the government of a maturing note of the Central Pacific In the periodical settlement of the old Pacific railroad debt. Payment of subscriptions on St. Paul new stock called for llO.OoO.flno The money market was not perceptibly aftected by these developments. Railroad traffic of ficials hud no increase In business to re port, but some growth of hopefulness over early revival of traffic was .discernible In their weekly views given tor publication. A decline In the price of copper at the New York Metal exchange and also In the price of London copper warrants was but lightly reflected In the prices of copper Industrial and mining stocks. The United States Steel stocks also were relatively little affectej by the generally heavy tosit. The probable direction to be taken by political activities In the approaching presK oentiai canvass claims a groa'ing snare of attention in the financial district and emphasises the indisposition towards layre operations In tl;. market. The bond murket was weak, the Rock Island collateral bonds forming the con spicuous Instance. Total sales of bonds, par value, 2,7!s,X. I'nlted States bonds Were unchanged on call. Beef steers were Is very light supply, while the demand was of fair proportions. Buyers were out In the yards In good sea son, all of them wanting a few head, with the result that the most of the offerings changed hands early In the morning. The prices paid were anywhere from steady lo a little stronger. In fact, quite a number of salesmen were, quoting their sales as loc higher than last week's close. Cows and heifers were also in pretty fair demand, but the quality was the poorest that It has been In a number of days. The demand was reasonably active and holders of good cows figured that they were able to get an advance of 10c. Naturally the common to medium cows did not move off quite so freely and It waa hard work to get any better prices than prevailed laat Fri day, although most salesmen were quoting the metket higher than Thursday. There were not very many gtockera and feeders on sale, while the demand was about as usual on a Monday. The market was generally steady, with last week's close and the offerings changed hands quite freely at prevailing prices. yoututlons on cattle: Good to choice cornfed steurs, l4.7Et(.6.rSS; fair to good corn fed steers, 4.''u..75; common to fair corn fed steers, $3.7.t4i4.30: good to choice cows and heifers. $3.6f.ii4.20; fair to good cows and heifers, J2. 75'h 3.60; common to fair cows and heifers, t2.004j2.75: good to choice Block ers and feeders, $l.2C'ii4.75; fair to good stockers and feeders. :i.75& 4 25: common to fair stockers and feeders. 12.7iQ3.75. Jtuyers evidently all wanted a few loads a'ld they took hold freely,, cleaning tip the offerings In good season In the morn ing. On the other hand, the lambs here were mostly too heavy to please' buyers. What few light lambs there were as a rule were not a very good quality. As a result, bjyers did not take hold of the lambs very freely, the trade being very slow and dull, with the tendency on the kind of lambs here lower.
