KKW YORK. Jan. M -It would l,e ilif.
flrult to deduce any well formed opinion
of the outlook for business prosperity or
the future values of securities from the
desultory drift of prices and the Insia
tilflranl dealing In today's stork market.
It waa aaautned during the dull period of
the morning that (fin appearance of the
president s message, was awaited, but when
It publication waa followed' by even
greater dullnea the conclusion was forced
that no radical shifting of ownership of
stocks wa being prompted by the com
munication of tiie chief executives views
to congress. Prices hardened Immediately
after the circulation of the primed reports
01 tne message, out it was ouvtous that
this wan a profeaaiunal movement on the
part of those who had sold stocks venter
dsy on the supposed direction tsken by
the document and were seeking the oc
casion of Its publication to get their slocks
Darg again.
The late afternoon presented an appear
ance of almost complete stagnation In the
market. Operatlnna In a few special stock
were without influence on the general mar
ket and some of tha most Influential stocks
In the list moved In contrary directions.
Illustrating the entire laVk of any con
sistent trend to tho movement. In one
case this wa due to the transfer of a
considerable sjieculallve account from onu
stock to another by selling the one and
rebuylng the other, sales of Pennsylvania
being made agalnat purchaaes of Reading.
The coalera aa a group were aomeahat
depreaaed by the lecemler net earning
reports of the Central Bailrnnd of New
Jersey and the Delaware c Hudson, Indi
cating the power of that group In com
mon with the general railroad system of
the country. There waa an attempt to
arouse Interest In the United States Hieel
stocks and to connect a rise In their (.ncea
wnn tne consultations among leaders In
the steel business which were In progress
In tills city yesterday. lrellmlnry esti
mates of the week's currency movement
Indicated another large addition to cash
holdings of the New York clearing house
oanas. although the flow of funds from
the Interior appears to be on a much
diminished scale from that of last week
and the week before. The end of the
month requirements coming together with
the usual special demand of a Friday at
the stock exchange to carry over loans
until ths folowlng Monday had a probable
effect on the ease of ths call money mar
ket. There seems to be a feeling that the
willingness of the prominent clearing house
banka to see these weaker members droo
out without further extraordinary means
to tide them over, argues a confidence In
exemption from harm that Is In Itself a
strength.
Thera waa some effect of the depression
In the bond market today. Including the
older New Tork city issues, as a result
of the announcements Bonds were IrreKii

llOGS-Durwj tne last three or lour days
receipts of ligai hogs liave been unusually
heavy. In tact It would apptar mat tne
country in its haste to dispose of ths hog
la running- in lighter stutf than usually
ecn on tne market at Una season of His
year. Thus it happen tnat buyer hav
teii getting- more life'l.t hogs tt.an tney
have had use for. That such waa tne case
wa very apparent till morning when
buyer started out picking up here and
there the heavy hogs and neglecting to a
considerable extent tiie light stuff, ihus It
happened that good heavy and heavy
mixed hogs sold very freely at price (uily
6c higher and In utne cases TV-' or even
loc higher than yesterday. Faleemen who
happened to have a lair proportion of
heavy hog were In some casv able to run
in their light load at the same time, mo
that ciuite a good many uf the llgi.l hog
showed more or less advance. On the
other hand it wa hard work to get buyer
to take hold of a string- of ail light weights.
Thus the market on light hog wa a
diag all the morning and after the heavy
hoK a ere disposed of and the more urgent
orders filled the market became still worse,
buyers seeming to have all the light stuff
that tliey wanted and being inclined to
leave the remainder in the yards unsold.
The close was very alow and weak, with
several load of light weight atill unaoid
and no one trying to buy them.
It look vuy much a If packer are
prepared to pound the light hog market
good and hard If present large receipts
continue. With more light weight than
th market demand there i every reason
for expecting the spread between light aud
heavy hog to increase unlesa the country
holds baek the ligl.t aluff.
