OMAHA. Jsn. 23. 1.
Higher closing cables started buying and
shorts to come In. Commission houses sold
on the rally, however, auo pricea rangi
near yesterday e close witn tne exception
of wheat, which ruled higher.
Wheat values were strong to higher, wmi
the crowd bearish, but buying waa good
on the hrenka and the short, interests were
overextended, making It an easy matter to
advanne the market. Good cash business
and reports of export sales at the sea
bosrd caused shorts to come In and closed
wheat strong. May wheat opened at W'ic
and closed at 9NV.
Corn was a llttlo essy at (he start on
selling on the declines abroad and the fore
cast for cohler weather. Commission houses
bought freely on the decline and sentiment
was bullish enough to hold the market
fairly firm. Closing values were slightly
under yesterday'a close. May corn opened
at fiti'i and closed at A6c.
Oota were soft and sold .off easily on
heavv orders from commission firms. Oood
demand and light receipts sustained prices.
Mb v oats opened at b.V-kO and ciosea at
63'4o!
Primary wheat receipts were Boft.ww nusn-
ela and. shipments I41,0os- hushele. against
receipts lasti vear of Sttn.ouu Dusneis ana
shipments of 172.OH0 bushels.
Corn receipts were Mhoun nusneia ana
shipments 6,oi bushels, against receipts
last year of 4n3.O00 bushels and shipments
of K.'JO bushels.
Clearancea were 240.000 bushels of corn.
I.OiiO bushels of oats, und wheat and flour
equal to 2S3.0) bushels.
Liverpool closed vud higher on wneat
an H'iiVjd higher on corn.

NEW YORE STOCKS 1ND BONDS
Movement of the Market it Still
Under Constraint

Inn Sknraly at

NEW YORK, Jan. 2.1 The movement of
the stock market today was under con
straint and profeaslonal operators were not
able to make much Impression on pricea.
Their dealings made up a large portion of
the total transactions. The reductions In
the offical discount rstea of the Bank of
England and the Bank of Fiance were
madn the occasion for opening prices here
on a higher level. The promptitude with
which advantage was taken of the advance
to make aales for the purpose of realising
profits was accepted as Illuminative of the
deerres of the larger speculative class. Rut
when the professional traders attempted to
follow this hint by sales of stocks in con
tinuation of the movement they found an
abatement of the offerings coming on the
market and felt obliged to turn again and
cover their short contracts. An Inference
waa drawn of strength on the part of the
bull party owing to the subsidence of sell
ing pressure on the decline, but a desire to
reduce their holdings al profitable levels
waa argued from the eagerness of the sell
ing on the advance. Prices fell back
sharply to the lowest at the last.
The pause In speculative activity was In
harmony with the tenor of news of affairs.
The rapid progress towards ease In the
money market was unaccompanied by any
positive evidence of a revival being thus
stimulated In trade activity, although lm-
frovement In sentiment In various lines of
rade was discernible as It applied to hopes
of foreign revivals. Thla was true of the
Iron and steel trade, regarding which, how
ever, the appearance of the United States
Steel quarterly report next Tuesday la
awaited before forming any definite con
clusions on the subject. The reduction of
the Bank of England official discount rate
from S to 4 per cent was wider than waa
anticipated, but the accumulation of re
serves to a proportion of 64.80 per cant of
liabilities proved the neceaaity of the step
In order to conserve the central Institution
In the open money market, where the new
discount rate waa still higher than the pre
vailing open market rate, which also re
reded before the reduction , In the bank
rate. The acceptance of this example by
the Bank of France confirms the univer
sality of the easing tendency of money. It
was significant of trur feeling existing
towarns questions oi new capital issues,
notwithstanding the rapid accumulation of
money resources that suggestions of new
loans, even when reported to be already
arranged for, caused depression In exist
ing securities of the ootnpanlea affected.
Delaware & Hudson wss an example, the
severe recent decline In that stock being
followed by well denned reports today of
the placing of a 3lO,OTiO,OuO one-year note la
sue. The seeking of only short-time ac
commodation by this company, aa waa dono
alao by the consolidated uaa company, ana
extension secured for some other short
time loans soon regarded at offering but
moderate promise of Immediate advantage
to seekers or new capital from the evident
piling up of funds In the banking centers.
The announcement of a tressurv call on
the New York banks for 310.000,000 of' gov
ernment deposits was passed over as an
unimportant Incident. The same was truo
of the advance of foreign exchange towards
the gold export point. The handful of rail
roads which have reported their netarn-
Ings for December cannot safely be sc
cepted as a criterion of the general show
ing to be made, but the shrinkage shown
by the few roads Is so heavy as to leave
a formidable impression of the possible er
hibit to be made by more complete figures.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, 32.284.0no. I'nitAl Slates bonds were

CATTLE Receiota of cattle this morn
ing numbered Hi cars, which was abjut
lno cars short of the run on Thursday of
last week. The quality was about th
name as noted yesterday; that Is, the bulk
of the receipts consisted of cows and
warmed-up steers, with a very meagur
showing of the better grades of beef. Sev
eral of the trains were late In arriving,
so that the market as a whole was con
siderably delayed.
There waa no very great change In the
market for beef steers. Oood cattU of that
description have been so scarce all the
week that receivers who were fortunste In
having anything desirable today generally
reported that they met with no difficulty
In securing fully as good prices as yester
day. -On the other hand, there bave been
a good rnany warmed-up cattle every day
thla week and the more common and In
ferior kinda were pretty slow all the morn
ing, but still It la a question If they sold
any worse than yesterday.
The market on caws and heifers opened
in fair season In the morning and the
good kinds were reasonably active at good,
steady prices. In fact, aalcameii In some
esses were reporting their best cows as
strong. Tbe common td medium grades,
while not so active, nevertheless sold In
about the samo notches as yesterday.
Oood feeders were again In active de
mand and feeder buyers were out early In
the morning picking up the most desirable
of the offerings. It Is safe lo quote good
feeders as fully stealy and active. Light
stockers have been, slow sellers all the
meek, due to the flirt that tli-v have been
quite plentiful, while the demand has not
been overly brlek.
Quotations on cattle: Oood to choice corn,
fed steers. $5,0046.50; fair to good enrnfed
seers, $4.5rfi6.0O; common to fair corbfed
steers, $3.75j4 6f; good to choice cows and
heifers, l3 5ni4W; fair to good cows and

morning, the first sales being largely at

of good loads. Common and light loads sold
still lower. In spite of the fact that the re
ceipts were extremely large, 2T2 cars were
reported and the market gradually firmed up
until a good share f the decline was re-'
covered. The trade became active and hogs
sold very freely al and rlftht around $1.10
for loads baring some weight, and quality.
It will ba remembered that the bulk of the
hogs yeserduy brought $4.lnn'i4.1(.

larger runs tnan expected, nut in spue or

the trade becoming more active until good,
heavy hogs were selling at $4.16 anfl up

back to about where It was yesterday.
Buvers kept at It until practically every
thing was disposed of. Considering tht big
runs, the market as a wnole was in very
