NEW TORIC. Jan. 12. The price move
ments In the general list of stocks were
little more than sympathetic reflections of
the fluctuations In the few stocks In which
profemlonsl operations centered. The pro
fessionals in fact, had the market Isrsely
to themeelvea There wss a subsidence of
liquidating pressure whK h was perceptible,
yesterday and this condition left an un
covered abort Isterent with needs to be pro
vided for. There Was a suspicion that the
turn in the market was fostered by the
strong financial Interests which hsve been
given credit for the u(iuri of the market.
which had been effective up to the end of
last week. When prices moved as they did
yesterday the common belief gains ground
among the speculative contingent that well
Informed insiders are gotting out of stocks.
With such a market as that or today, wnere
heavy selling operations are apparently sus
pended, speculative sentiment shifts to an
other estimate of the course of procedure
of the "insiders."
Conditions were not sppreciahly changed
today from yesterday. Evidence accumu
lated of the piling of money In this center.
of the growing pressure to put It out in
loans and of the Increasing pietnora in
loaning channel which Is resulting. The
same tendency seems to be quite universal
and redaction In the official discount rstes
of the Bank of England and France to
morrow was canvassed as a likelihood In
foreign markets. This development is hav
ing its inevitable effect in Improving the
demand for "gilt- edged," highly secured
bonds of a seasoned capacity. How far
It ha prepared the way for successful
issus of new bonds Is not yet clear. Such
new flotations are, to some extent, depend
ent for success not only on money market
conditions, but on prosperous conditions for
ths Issuing companies such as would be
reflected in rising prices for their shares.
Information coming to band today offered
little assurance for present expansion of
business activity, bevnnd the Increase In
confidence in an early revival of demand
for products to be stimulated by the re
Isxatlon In the money market. News of the
dsy, hoyever, continues to give reports of
shrinkage of traffic and of curtailment and
economy to keep pace with It. The failure
Of minor banking Institutions In Pittsburg
snd Chicago, while recognised to be of
small Importance tn themselves, touched
sentiment on a sensitive spot In the finan
cial bodv. Some relief was caused by the
partial illumination shed on some banking
affairs that were subjects of disturbing
surmise yesterday. The day's fluctuations
were followed with timidity In either direc
tion and the substantial rslly from the low
point of the morning was not held with any
confidence, the closing tone being decidedly
heavy.
A brisk rally In the Rock Island collateral
bonds was a feature of the bond market,

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were quite liberal for Wednesday at this
point and large at most other markets,
with the result that there was a weak
tone to the trade everywhere. In fact, ad
vices from most selling points Indicated a
lower market at the opening.
Feeder buyers opened the market at tills
point. The supply of really desirable feed
ers was by no mean large, while on the
other hand there was a pretty good buying
demand, with the result thst cattle haying
both Weight and quality commanded gener
ally good steady price. On the other hand
light stocker were very slow and weak.
Fortunately ths supply ot that kind of
csttle In first hands wss not as Isrge as it
has been on previous dsys this week, but
it was plenty large enough to supply the
requirements of buyers. Speculators had
a good many cattle of that description on
hand and hence were not taking hold of
tne rreert arrivals very rreeiy.
Half of the receipts were late In arriving
at the yards, with the result that buyers
of fst cattle were Inclined to hold back
awaiting late trains. Thus' the markrt
opened slow and the forenoon was well
advanced before any business of conse
quence was transacted. The feeling on
right good cattle was steady, but on all
others the trade waa slow to 10c lower.
Cows snd heifers were In liberal supply
and the most desirable kinds commanded
about steady prices owing in lame part to
there being a fair demand on the part of
both packers and shippers. Other grades
were slow to 1H2 tower.

HOGS Hogs sold 10c lower this morning,
good plump 10c, there being nothing
scant about the 1 measure. The reason for
the break in values wss not hard to find.
Receipts, not only here, but at all other
market points were very heavy and con
siderably In excess of th urgent require
ments or the buyers. The trade was stow
at the decline and It required the whole
forenoon to effect anything like a clear
ance. The better grades of hugs sola
largely at 34 leg 4 15. aa against a bulk yes
terday of 84.mti4.2b. As lilsn as I4 j was
paid today, which was only 6c lower than
yesterday's top. Light . hogs sold from
84 1') down.
The market closed very slow and weak.
On the lat market It waa hardly possible
to get over 94.10 for anything regardless of
how good It might be.
