NEW TORK. Jsn 1L Speculative op

b-teen two cpinions cf the Immedlete
oat look for aalues. with the result thst the
market was somewhat restricted In volume
and irregular In price movement until the
final uprusn raused by the bank statement.
There was some arrest to the reactionary
tendencr. which had become rather vio
lent yesterday when fears became preva
lent of further railroad recetvershipa In
view of the unsupported slate of the South
ern Railway secur1tis. In-nials of the
rumors of a proposed receivership were
hsd from official sources, which quieted
uneasiness on the subject to some extent.
A special and urgent demand for St. Paul
which sti unexplained by any newa de
velopment. as a conspicuous sustaining
Influence in the market. Furthermore,
there as a disposition rnanlfesi to con
tinue the taking of profits when the mar
ket showed strength sufficient to sbsorb
aajes. Prices In consequence wavered oc
casionally. A good Impression wss made by authori
tative Intimations given out in mercantile
circles of sn adjustment effected In affairs
of important retail dry goode eatabllsh
menta in this city, mhich injure ampie
provtaiona for their financial needs. The
depressing Influence of rumore on the sub
ject which have continued prevalent waa
thus definitely eliminated The marking
up of Baltimore aV Ohio waa a reflection
of the maintenance of the dividend rate.
An inkling of the extraordinary- character
of tle bank ststement srparently reached
the floor of the Stock exchange before its
appearance on the tape, wincn was after
trading for the day t.ad ceased, and the
buoyant closing ass the consequence. Tte
hope has been entertained, but with re
serve, thst this week rnitrht see the deficit
reserve of the New York banks reduced
to inslgmflcsnt proportions or wiped out
entirely. The re-establishment of a com
fortable surplus of upasrd of t..900.f:.
however, exceeds the expectstion of even
the hopeful class. The l&.i v.Wu gain In
cash shows that the return of hoarded
funds has been unexpectedly heavy. The
large loan contraction Indicates the prog
reps making in the retirement of clearing
house certiilcates and also helped the ef
fect of the cssh gain on the proportionate
showing of the reeerve item.

CATTLE There were, as usual on the
last day of the week, no cattle of any
consequence on sale this morning, the mar
ket being nominally steady with the day
before.
The receipts of cattle this week have
been quite liberal, being almost double
the receipts of the previous wek and

the corresponding week of last year. The
Quality of th cattle coming this week he
been none too good, although a few decent

The great bulk of the receipts, however,
ha consisted of warmed up ateers and cow
tuff, with a very small sprinkling of
Blockers and feeder. I
The week started out lower on oeer

drop of NXtrtAc on Monday and Tuesday.
Since Tuesday, under the influence of a
very good buying demand, rrlee have

clearance, and the general feeling on the
market was favorable to the selling in

some are quoting the market as higher

Cow and heifer during th first two

market is strong, to say the least, as com

Sinckere and feeders have been in very

been very decent demand for this season
