NEW TORK. IVc. 10 The dull trad

was fltspla. ed in a spottv nd trregJiar
manner. Professional traders did much
of the butlness and buying to cover anon
by a retreating besr Interest was an Im
portant factor in the activity. There was
an awpuniption on the part of buver ot
stocks that tomorrow's bank statement
was to show a material recuperation In
the position ot the clearing house Institu
tions. The usual preliminary forecast of Hie
week's currency movement Indicated some
improvement of position, but It was on
an Intimation of the concealed changes
that the assumption of radical betterment
waa based. It was reported that there
had been returns made during the we-k
of some of the advances to trust com
panies that were beleaguered during the
panic period, which waa likely to have
notable effect not only on the cai-ti. It
was said, but on the loana of the banks,
as both kinds of assistance was known
to have been extended to the trust com
panies bv the banks In their period of
need. The know n movfmentt of money
indicate that the tide of the cash move
ment to the Interior has lost some of its
force, while gold baa continued to arrive
from abroad. The local banks have bene
fited also from Increased deposits of gov

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were Unlit as usual on a Friday. More
that that, the. quality was not very good,
the arrivals consisting principally of trash,
that is, a whole lot of odds and ends and
not very much of anything.
The market was in about the same condi
tion that It has been in every day this
week, that is, slow and dull from start to
finish. As is apt to be the case just before
the holidays, lha demand was limited, and
W'hlle paikers would pick out here and
there a load of steers that just happened
to meet their requirements, salesmen found
It In many cases hard work unloading.
Packers report the consuming demand
lighter than usual at this season of the
year, and prospects at the present time
would seem to favor the Jpellef In a con
tnnuance of dull markets until after the
holidays.
The few cows and heifers here were also
slow sellers, but still the trade was in about
the same condition as yesterday, there be
ing no quotable change In prices.
There were not enough feeders to cut
any figure in the market. Owiwj to mod
erate receipts and a little belter demand,
strictly good feeders have shown some
strength this week, but It is very evident
that the market Is not In a condition to
stand very large runs.

BHEEP Receipts of sheep this morning
were so light that there were really not
enough in sight to make a market. All
told, only five fresh cars were reported.
Of these two cars of lambs sold at J.V34. A
car and a half of lambs on the nsthe order
sold st Jo.Oii. with a tar and a half of ewes
at e-lVl, All these prices looked Just about
steady with yesterday.
As has been noted from dsy to day. the
market on both sheep and lambs has been
very quiet, with the demand limited. This
is nothing unustal, as no one ever looks
for very active trade just before the be
ginning of the holidays. For this reason
operators on the market as a rule are in
ticipatlr.g a continuance of the present
quiet market until after the- first of the
year.
Five cars of feeders came In late and
unexpectedly. Tl.ev were ahout half and
half ewes and lambs. Four cars of them
were Wyoming rangers.

HOGS The market opened this morning
with speculators and shippers picking up a
few such IcaJs as would answer their pur
poses at prices that were about steady with
yesterday's early market, although con
siderably lower than the best time. In
other word, they paid J4 3oiil.35, and as
high a 1. J4.37H. The demand from this
t' li roe waa limited and as soon aa the ship
pers stopiied buying the market came to
a standstill. The big packers were all
claiming that the market al tnis point was
too high yei'erday, as compared with Chi
cago, and as tarly advices from Chiuago in
dicated a still lower market at that point
today, they were determined to force prices
downward. Accordingly they started out
bidding J4.2'tj4 25, but sellers Were not In
clined to make such a heavy concession
without a hard fight, and the morning ac
cordingly wore away with very little busi
ness Iraneacled.
liuyeis were stubborn, and. as they would
not raise their bids, sellers were finally
forced to cut loose on the basle of Jl 22Vj
for the general run of good hogs. A con
siderable proportion of the receipts
changed hands a' this figure, but still buy
ers were nut satisfied and later on it waa
Impossible to get over Ji.ji, with the less
desirable loads even lower than that. In
other words, ihe market became 15c lower
thaa yesterday's general market, or 2oc
lower than yesterday's best time.
As noted yesterday, the market at the
present rime Is a most difficult proposition
for anyone to operate upon. Ii is ao un
certain and takes such unexpected turns
that neither buyera nor sellers know where
they are at or what is coming next. Yes
terday the mantel opened at what looked
like a fair figure as tumpared with other
market points. Then as Chicago came
closing worse, tins market befaii bracing
up and got stronger every minute, closing
at tl.e high point. Thus the early ulti
looked lew as compttrrd with the later
market. Today t.'ie trade waa reversed it
kept fi tting worse from start to finiaii, so
that the early sales looked very hlgn as
t-oinJjared with tl.e close. These sudJen
changes up and down ar unexplained and
there la no way that a fc.-ll.-r a,n protect
himself, lie may refuse to cut liot at
what I H)Vs like a low pi Ice. only to nnd a
few minutes later that it waa really a high
figure.
