RISE FOLLOWS EARLY DECLEJE Advance Dae to Increase In Dividends ky Twa Rallroade--Call Loan Rate Rises' and Close Is Lower nnd Irregalar. , NEW TORK. Dec. 17 The scnntlness of the money supplies kept the stock market dull and contracted t he speculative actlv ity materially, hut the tone of the market showed seme relief from the heaviness that has weighed upon it for several days past. Prlcea showed small resiliency, how ever, anl the movement ilra"r ng and hesk: tisg. Asslstanct toward r listing ihe mood 01 depression wua ....onb-u oy the news of the declaration of extra dividends of 2 per cent on Lake Shore and Michigan Central stock, the two most prominent subsidiaries of the New York Central. Lake Shore s semi-annual dividend of 6 per cent has been the regular rate only for two previous half years and the same is true of Michigan Central s S per cent, the rate on Lake Shore previous to that having been 8 per cent a year for three years, and on Michigan Central 4 per cent a year for eleven years. The surplus from these dividend profits over the sum required to pay Interest on the collatersl bonds issued by the New York Central accrues to the New York Central treasury, which holds most of the stock of the two companies. There haa been conspicuous selling of New York Central for seversl days on an as sumption that Its dividend would be re duced or paid In scrip by decision of the directors this week. The action on the subsidiary stocks today ahook this belief and led to buying to cover shorts by the besrs. Other stocks In the list showed a similar condition of over extension of the short interest, following the recent active selling. This was true of American Sugar and to some extent of the copper shares. The sustaining effect on prices in genersl developed only after a period of sharp re cessions. The coalers were conspicuous In the decline, Reading leading. The weak ness was attributed to reports of consul tation among those interested in these properties to devise means to meet the re quirements of the law for divestment of ownership of coal mines. Assertions ac companied these reports that difficulties were encountered In finding a feasible method "t c'"rlv, rig !'' " r law. which s emed to thrj ten the neces Ity f sus penhion of busings i.y . . e companies wtien the law becomes effective on May 1. The subsequent rally In the stocks pointed to a professional origin for much of the selling. The whole market. In fact, re mained largely in professional hands and was narrow. Dividend prospects for Isdi vidual stocks formed the staple of the dis cussion. Money 1 conditions were unchanged. The premium persisted on currency, call loan rates went higher than yesterday and dis counts rose in both Ixmdon and Berlin. Fears of a severe money stringency over the year end In meeting the necessities of that period affected these markets, and New York's continued demand for gold aggravates the apprehension. New Tork's command of the exchangee is explained by foreign trade statement, which showa an excess value of exports over Imports for the month of tr,3.fi5,751. Not only was there a decline of nearly S?.(nrt00 In value of Imports compared with the previous November, but exports have risen In value S21.7S9.0uO, the agricultural exports furnlsh aome 50fO.("j of the Increase. Additional understanding of the International ex change situation is afforded by the show ing that In spite of November's J.4.".3.036 of gold imports, the eleven months of the cal endar year show an excess of Imports over exports of gold of only S-M. 626.482, compared with Xlifl.13i.8NO In the eleven months of last year. The market did not show very much change. remaining in about the same condition as yesterday. Packera were inquiring after a few good killing cattle, but the demand waa by no means urgent, and the trade was slow and dull from start to finish. The prices paid did not show very mucn change as com pared with yesterday aid there were, some right good steers that sold up to S3. 60. Half fat kinds, however, were slow sellers at the low figures prevailing at the present time. Cows and heifers were also slow, and while prices were generally about steady the demand was by no means urgent, so that the market waa more or leas of a drag throughout the whole session. Some of the best feeders sold to good advantage, but the market could hardly be quoted very much different from yes terday. UNIQUE USE OF GAME CARDS Employed Down nonfat to Enable Black Deck Hands to Die ting lab Boats. "I recall an unique use to which playing cards used to be put sway down In Mis sissippi when I waa a boy," said C. H. Oet tlnger of St. Louis, who U a guest at the Paxton hotel. Playing cards were then made to perform an Important function In commerce. The negroes who loaded cotton and other merchandise Into the boats and cars could not read letters or figures. A lot of strapping black fellows would be on the Job of loading cars under a white fore man, and on each car the foreman would tack a playing card and I've seen a string of cars being loaded with cotton that used up all of the fifty-two cards In ths deck and the Joker, and then ths foreman would Issue orders with great volubility. " 'Load this on board the Jack of Clubs; put that on the Queen of Hearts; that goes to the Ace of Diamonds; Six of Spades there.' '. All day long ons could hear him bawling out his orders by calling out the names of cards, and when night came and tho cars were all loaded the foremen could rest as sured that no mistakes had been made, for while the negroes were short on letters snd figures, they were all-fired long on cards." NEW ORLEANS. La.. Dec. 17. -Dispatches from sevual northwest Louisiana points, where three Italians have been killed and several wounded rlnce Saturday night. Indicate that the trouble has not been quite so serious as at first reported. Instead of fighting occurring between whltl residents of Chat ham vllle, La., and vicin ity, as formerly reported, today's dispatch Indicates thst probably less thsn a dosen unruly negroes committed nearly. If not more, than this number of ssssulta There Is more ground for suspicion, however, that th whites, through 111 feeling towards ths Italians fur accepting reduced wage, failed to exercise the restraining Land which they usually have over the negroes . In that section. A posse from Shreveport. Lav. has gone to the scene of tha assault to restore order and arrest tha aegre.
