CHICAGO GRAIN A!sl PROVISIONS
Featares of the Trading and Closing
Prices oa Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. Deo. 14. The prospect of light
world's shipments In .the near future caused
nrra rloso to the local wneai marnei
today. At the close wheut for May delivery
was up li4ic to KQbf. corn was S'i'c
higher, oau were up Vs''ic nd provisions
were from 10c to 17Sc higher.
The wheat market today opened firm on
the strength of higher, markets st Liver
pool, which were based upon reports of
rains, which are Interfering with harvesting
in Argentina. Later this advance was
checked becau e of liberal receipts in the
northwest. The market was dull through
out the session, the storm which has pre
vailed here for twenty-four hours interfer
ing with the sales rtf-'-cash wheat and
speculative bu; mg anJ es-lllng being light.
Lerter. however, the announcement win
made by an English, twf-rt that the pros
pects are for light ' world's shipments In
the near future. On the strength of this
the market rallied and" closed firm. May
wheat opened VO'sc to StiSc hl-rher at
31-00. .sl.lioS. sold between fl.00'4 and 31.01'n
and closed at 31.C'l'tfrl.0l. Clearances of
wheat and flour were equal to 4.T6.0"0 bu.
Primary receipts were 70.t0 bu., against
!2.i0 on the same dav last year. Minne
apolis, Duluth and Chicago reported re
ceipts of 639 cars, against tJi last week and
67j one year ago.
The corn market .was exceedingly dull
all day and Vrices ranged higher because
of the storms prevailing throughout the
corn belt, which was likely to delay ar
rivals and cause further deterioration In
the crop. Arrivals today were unusually
light because of the heavv storm. Mav
corn opened VSJC higher st 56tifi7c, sold
between wTjc and CT'taiV: and closed at
the latter figure. Local receipts were 171
cars, with 14 of contract grade.
Trade In oats was today entirely local
and the market dragged heavily, just at
the close prices advanced slightly in sym
pethy with wheat and corn. May oats
opened unchanged to HfUc higher at
fvVC to 5.V4C. sold between Mvti52c and
53c and cloned at &3tTC37irC Local re
ceipts were 2U cars.
The provisions market opened wesk on
the expectation of a big run of hogs and
lower prices for them. Tbe storm, how
ever, held the trains back and compara
tively few hogs came on sale. Buying was
good and prices not only recovered the
esrly loss, but advanced besides. At the
close May pork was up 17lc at 313.15, lard-
was itc higher at IT : and ribs were loa
12Hc higher at I7.OMi1.o7H.
Juttlmated receipts for Monday: Wheat.

CATTLE There Were no cattle of any
consequtnee this morning and so far a 1
could be observed none wanted. It bein
as usual 011 Saturday a holiday In the
catHe division. Ti.e receipts fur tho wK
have been quite liberal, snowing a slight
tain over the pirevtous week, but still there
has been a falling 01T of about lO.tMo head
as compared witli the corresponding week
last yfcar. The arrivals havo consisted
very largely of natives and fed weaterns.
Willi quite a little sprinkling of rsnge stuff.
The fed catties have been almost entires
on the warrued up order, there being; very
few fctrl-j'ly good killers received.
The week started out about steady on
beef steers and during the first two days
the trade was In pretty fair shape, al
though the demand was not sufficiently
urgent to make a good active market, on
Wednesday and 'luursday prices went dow n
hill very rapidly and Friday s market was
very Weak. Thus at the close' it is safe
to quote the general market 26c lower than
a week ago. The highest price paid for
beef steers during the week was 45.75 for
on lot of very cl-oice Christmas cattle.
The fact tltal It tai:os very good, well
finished cattle to bring o.40 will give some
Idea of t-ie condition of tke market. Packers
complained that the consuming demand Is
very poor, in all sections of ttie country
and the fact that they do not appear to
want very many cattle would seem to bear
out their statements. The feeling at the
close of the week Is by no means encourag
ing ana at present writing mere is noiiung
In slgnt to- warrant a belief In any very
material or lasting improvement in the
market. Light runs for several days in
succession as a matter of course might
lead to a sham reaction In nrlces. but
such reaction could hardly be expected to
he permanent.

would apply In the main to the cow and
heifer trade. There seemed to be a very
fair demand for the better grades of fat
cows, such as are selling fiom 33.2o and
upwards, but the t rude all the week lias
been very slow and dull on the common
to medium kinds, closing 25c lower than
last week, -
The fsde In Blockers and feeders this
week has been the dullest and most un
satisfactory of the season. With the fat
cattle maraet in such a discouraging condi
tion and with the price of corn Jitgh feeders
must necessarily have lots of nerve to
buy cattle even at prevailing low prices.
That the number having the courage is
comparatively small was thoroughly proven
tins wees, in oemana lor xeeuers ai.u
Blockers cattle having been very light. As
a result cattle of that description have de
clined In the same proportion as fat cattle,
the market being i&c lower at the close of
the week on the fair to good kind. The
summon light cattle have been extremely
hard to sell at euu lower prices.

HOGS Hogs opened 25c lower than yes
terday ruurniiig, with other market points
r.-poiting as large or larger declines. 11
was one ot lhot cases wliei nothing could
be gained by holding on aj.d sellers ac
cordingly cut loose in pretty fair season
In the .i.ornlng. The early trade was fauiy
active at the decline noted. 1 he hogs sold
mostly between 94.2V and H.Jo Hal la.
very largely al ana rigui around l 12
while yeairrday morning the most popular
range was $.50"i4.62H- Although the re
ceipts were uiuclt lurgor than expected,
being the heaviest of any day aliut Sep
teuioer 10, tha balk changed hands before
Id o clock In the morning. As sou as tne
more urgent orders were filled the traue
slowed up, becoming dull and weak at tne
de l.ne.
1 he total receipts for the week foot up
4T.,w4 head, being the largest since the
financial disturbance started and slightly
larger than for the corrvapouduig wees of
a year ago. Tha market lias been wild
and erratic during the whole week. It
started out -with -er sharp decline, which
was followed up eo Tuesuay, carrying the
ma rite I to a point Juu lower than the close
of the previous weea. On Wednesday ai d
Thursday tbe ruaraet shot upward, alio. rig
an advance for tne two d of J1H'. Yes
lerday and today the market went down
Willi even mole rapidity. Hie lose in the
two days amounting on an average to not
far from 4vC. Thus the Week cloaca at the
low point, belit; tdko lower than the
close of last werg and the lowest of any
tune since November 27.
