CHICAGO, Dec. 13. Liberal primary re

The wheat market opened weak because
of a moderate decline at Liverpool and,
with the exception of a few mild rallies,
continued hesvy all day. The dullness of
ejtport business, the poor demand for cash
wheat and the large Increase In stocks
of wheat at Minneapolis were the depress
ing factors. The strength of corn and a
late recovery at Liverpool were the bullish
features. Trade, which wss active early

NEW YORK, Dec. 13. Speculative condi
tions were unaltered today, the Influences
governing ths market being as potent In
decreasing prices ss on previous days of
the week. Liquidation played a large part
In the day's decline and was materially as
sisted bv an enersetlo bear faction which
assailed different stocks from time to time
In an endeavor to force out long stock.
Discussion as to probable dividend reduc
tions, combined wtlh the manifest lack
of effective Inside support at critical times
discouraged bull operstors and prices were
accordingly allowed to take tneir course.
i he selling pressure snirtea aooui irom
one. stock to another, but eventually tne
entire list displayed Increasing weakness
which was continued to the close
New York Central and American Sugar
wercihe weakest -features of their re
spective groups although the known In
fluences responsiuie lor meir weaanesa
were assumed to be radically different.
In the case of American Bugar the recent
death of President Havemeyer was as
signed as the principal cause of the recent
hearr liuuldatlon In that stock, dui com
petent market observers were Inclined to
attach much credence to a rumor that a
successful bear operator was making a
campaign against the stock, t'ncertalnty
as to the forthcoming dividend distribution
on New York Central, together with the
knowledge that further large sums must
bo expended to complete the terminal Im
provements and other projects in course of
construction are credited wtlh being the
primary reasons for the extensive liuulda
tlon In that stock. Whether the facts out
lined cover the underlying motives for the
weakness in those stocks or not, It Is rec-
ornlsed that the rank and file of specula
tors need little more than a tentative dem
onstration against a stock to encourage
them to Join the movement with enthusiasm.
The belief la entertained that tomorrow"!
bank statement will make a favorable
showing, although money conditions are
still regarded as being far from reassuring.
With virtually nominal markets existing
for mercantile paper and the time money
and wtlh the continuation of the currency
premium expectations of an early readjust
ment to a nominal basis are not encour
aging. The October statements of both the
Union Paclflo and Southern Paclflo rail
roads which showed large Increases In
gross earnings converted Into a heavy
shrinkage In net earnings owing to a high
ratio of operating expenses contributed to
the weakness In those stocks and in
measure fostered the late decline In the
general list.
Uonds were Irregular, with a lower tend
ency. Total sales, par value, $1.IW.000

CATTLE RecelDt s of cattle were ex
tremelv llerht this morning, there not being
enough fresh receipts to rtally make a test
of values. Still there were quite a number
of cattle carried over from the day uerore,
It am verv fortunate for the selling inter
ests that receipts were no larger, as tho
demand turned out to be very light, there
being only two packers' representatives in
the yards on the opening, as mignt De im
as-lned under the clrcumstsncts. It was 1
slow, weak market from start to finish
MTo nut It another way. cattle sold today
at the low oolnt of the season so far, or 200
lower tnan the close 01 last weea. inis
would apply to practically all kinds of cat
tle, both killers and feeders. As a matter
of course, some kinds of cattle have felt
the decline more than others. It being the
rule that good cattle will stand up better
under a break than tne less aesiraoie
grades. There has been an almost entire
absence or snan ana lire 10 me traue an
the week, the demand of buyers being
limited and hardly up to the receipts. From
a seller's standooint the trade is In a very
unpromising condition, present prices being
low and there oelng notning in signt to
warrant anyone In expecting anything bet
ter In the near future.
Some very choice and well finished beeves
sold late yesterday at $6.70. They were fed
by one of the beat feeders In the stato
and In former years would have sold as
Christmas cattle.

lower than Thursday's market, the hogs
selling largely at H.tfxbH.5o, with a top at
)4.0. The trade was fairly aotive at the
decline, sellers under the prevailing con
ditions being unable to do anything but
take their medicine. They accordingly cut
loose at the figures noted.
Before sellers had a chance to unload
all their holdings the market took another
sudden drop. Chicago advices Indicated a
Dress, there of Xb-Booc, wnue Kansas iuy
and St. Joseph, sent In reports of a JOftMoc
break at those points. Buyers here sud
denly lowered their bids so as to bring them
into line with other selling points, which
means that the market became soiioo lower
than yesterday. On the close It took right
good loads, such as sold at $4 70 yester
day to bring 84.40, with the light loaus on
down still lower.
It Is hardly necessary to add that the
market -.oday both here and at all ether
market points was in the most demoralised
condition that It has been any day since the
beginning of the big break.

MARKET
SHKEP The market this morning was In
the most unsatisfactory condition that It
has been In for some time. The trade was
practically at a standstill. The early re
ceipts were estimated at sixteen cars, but
later reports indicated that there might
be In before the close as many aa twenty
five rsrs. This would have been a large
run for a Friday at any time, but was es
pecially large considering the condition of
tho market. Buyers were out In the morn
ing and picked up a few very good heavy
western yearlings at 34.36, the same that
brought 84.66 on Tuesday of this week and
86 at the beginning of the season. A few
lambs changed hands at 86 50, with a few
little bunches of other stuff, t-eeder buy
ers paid 15.36 for seven cars of very good
Wyoming range lambs. Then the market
came to a standstill. It did not seem to lie
so much a question of price as not want
ing the stuff at all. Packers claimed that
they were filled full and did not have or
ders and went to the house without trying
to buy. Still there was no question but
what the market was a good deal lower.
Advices from other selling points, espe
cially Chicago, were most discouraging.

NEW YORK, Dec. 13. R. Q. Dun Co.'
weekly review of trade tomorrow will say I
Commercial reports indicate little altera
tion for the last week, but conlldence is
expressed that there will be marked Im
provement after January 1. Holiday trado
monopolists attention, in some sections ex
ceeding that of last year, though aggre
gate Bales do not compare favorably with
ll to dale. Jobbing and wholesale lines
are seasonably quiet, while manufacturing
operations are curtailed pending the re
sumption of normal demands. Trie supply
of labor has increased, but not In ratio to
the closed plants, however, owing to eml
gratlon, which Is about double that of last
year. Some sections report a bettor senti
ment In the Iron and steel Industry, al
though new bualness Is limited snd little
recovery is expected until next ywar. Sev
eral orders for-xolllng stock were placed
this week, and more business of this
nature Is under negotiation, while the of
ficial report ot exports of products of iron
and steel elvbw a total value of t1.o00-"
In ten months of 1907. or over 10 per cent
of the value of alt merchandise gent
abroad.
Fluctuations in the raw material pro
duced some Irregularity in the tons of cot
ton goods, but net changes occurred In
prices. As neither manufacturer nor buyer
seems desirous of establishing a new basis
of quotations the market Is nominally un
changed. The only division of the cotton
manufacturers' market that shows accumu
lation ia the export class. No new busi
ness with China Is anticipated until prices
decline materially. Certain lines of wool
ens f r next fsll have been opened and thn
market canvassed to aom eient N
dellinlte tendency Is noted thus fsr, how.
ever, and many dealers prefer to postpone
presenting new lines somewhat longer.
There Is a belief that the cheaper lines will .
attract relatively more attention than In
recent years, but there Is uncertainty as to
the variety of gooda that will be poptilsr.
Footwear shipments through Boston are
much smaller than a year ago. yet senti
ment has improved, and wholesalers are
expected to operate freely in the near
future. Less stringency helps the tone,
and reports from salesmen are unanimous
In declaring that no surplus stocks are
held by Jobbers. A better Inquiry In the
leather market promises a revival of busi
ness after January 1. Prices are steady
for standard sole, although some odd lots
have been rlsposed of nt further conces
sions. Belting leather Is dull and wesk.

BRADSTnEUT'S BEVIEW OF TRADE
Cross-Cnrrents la Finance and Ia
dnstry Prevent Generalisation.
NEW YORK, Dec. U-Brsdstreefg to
morrow will say:
Cross currents In finance and Industry
prevent generalisation, but financial condi
tions generally have shown further easing
while the approach of the holiday period
and more seasonable weather has helped
curtail ' distribution which in some sec
tions also feels the stimulus of price con
cessions. On the other hand wholesale
and Jobbing trade has rather quieted and
manufacturing induatry has slackened
slightly. In no brsnch of trade distribution
or Industry are operations so brisk as at
this dale in recent years. Collections gen
erally are very slow and failures tend tu
Ineeraslng In number.
In financial affairs the oountry Is making
gradual approaches to thn normal. Western
banks are showing an increasing disposi
tion to pay out currency, some inquiry for
mercantile paper Is noted on the part of
Interior banks at leading western centers
and some money has begun to return to
Chicago. Savings bank withdrawals are
sinull where the embargo on withdrawing
has been lifted. The premium on currency
still persists at many cities, however, and
this la variously assigned to window dress
ing by slate banks awaiting culls as to
condition and to the need always felt at
holiday season for small bills.
There Is less talk of cancellations, though
here are evidences of these In many lines.
To offset the possibility of large stocks so
cumulating, buyers are keeping their activ
ities restricted and this tendency Is also re
inforced by a fair volume of resales by
Jobbers who find surplus supplies at hand.
Amour the Industries a feature la the
continuance of belter failing in iron and
steel, accompanied by some Inquiry for
near future wants. Production 1m, however,
being restricted, an example being fur
nished by the reports tiiat pig iron produc
tion In the Pittsburg district is but 40 to
60 per cent of normal, while finishing mills
are running to Oo to 70 per cent of their ca
pacity. Building has shown a heavy falling off
and all materials are dull. Lumber la
quiet and Weak and there are reports of a
quite general ahutdown of mills In tne
south. A similar condition Is reported In
the northwext and luxglng operations this
winter bid fair to bj greatly restricted.
Curtailment of output is quite gen'-ral
among the textile industries and inuny New
England mills In other lines are restrict
ing output. This is especially a true in
metsl working, shoe munufactuiing and
otner lines.
