NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Market Eallitt at Opening Becanse
of ElTectiye Support.
VALUES ARE GENERALLY HIGHER
Metal Oros? and Western I n Ion Are
Weak Becanse of t'nfarorable
Newe AfTect'ag These Properties-
Cloee la Easy.
NEW YOnft, Deo. .-The stock market
today gave plain evidence of the operation
of protective measures for the support of
prices sgalnst depreneion. The vigor with
which the market rallied from the general
declines at the opening and the determina
tion with wnlch prices were bid up of
the half doten stocks which re of most
influence In shaping speculative sentiment
on the whole, lint gave testimony to the
benevolent control being exercised by capi
talists of the largest resources.
The fart of this support is now generally
recognised about the Stork exchange, while
opinions vary widely as to the motive
guiding the movement. . Cynical observers
profess to see In It nothing beyond a device
to secure an advantageous mHrket for
holdings which lurge capitalists were prac
tically forced to take on- in the- period of
the panic to' avert the utter demoraJisatlon
of affairs In which they were interested.
The more liberal view of the favor shown
towards the recovery Is that a Judicious
readjustment of price's was warranted after
the utter prostration to which forced
liquidation bad csrried quotations and the
general credit situation will be helped by
this readjustment, 'affecting securltloe that
form the basis for extensive money obliga
tions and which figure In the balance sheets
of many Institutions' for whlrh the annual
statements are now In preparation. The
effectiveness of the support for the market
was made notable by reason of the rather
acute weakness shown by a few special
stocks. The weakness of the copper group.
Including American Smelting, waa pro
nounced, and was dtrertly attributable to
the unfavorable trade developments. The
drastic reduction In output of copper dis
closed In the entire shutdown of some of
the Amalgamated Copper company's prop
erties iolnted accurately to the source of
the doubts reflected in -the movement of
these storks. Firthfr dividend reductions
were counted upon as an outcome of this
action, Thero Is growing appreciation also
of the limited consumptive demand, which
has figured In the recent large exports of
copper, and which are now aliened to be
going into European stocks Instead of Into
consumption. The transfer of stocks from
here to abroad Is said to have been made
only with a view to superior money market
facilities there for holding purposes.
The Imminence of th dividend meeting
for Western Union explained the special
movement In that stock. Fears were en
tertained thnt the shrinkage in genernl
business activity, always rellected In tele
graph revenues, as well aa the losses inci
dent to the strike of telegraph operators,
would prompt the directors to pass the
coming dlvtdond or to materially reduce It.
This khid of expectation was clear In the
case of other Industrial stocks, notably
Distillers' Securities.
The call loan market was even firmer
than on Friday, due to Increased stock
market borrowing, and this was an ad
monitory Influence on speculative exten
sion. Another Influence on the call loan
market, however, was the stirring of life
In the time loan market and In that for
mercantile paper. Increased supplies were
reported In those markets and bankers and
money lenders were less bent on conserving
their funds In the liquid form of call loans.
Some withdrawals of that form of credits
evidently were being transferred to tho
othesa; a clear Intimation of the easing
of the whole money situation. This develop,
ment aroused a hope that the easing of
money might come before the turn of .the
year, although the expectation has been
that the January settlements would .have
to be met before this happened. Some of
the demand from out-of-town - banks for
currency kept up and a premium was still
paid. Another large engagement of gold

CATTLE There was a fair run of catle
at this point this morning, although re
ceipts could not be considered as excessive;
Chicago and other market points also re
ported liberal runs. The arrivals at this point
consisted of a mixture of natives and
rangers. The fed stuff was on the warmed
up order, with very little that could be
called really good killers. Receipts ot cows
and heifers were quite large and there
was a considerable sprinkling of feeders.
. The market opened slow and -dull. Pack
ers were evidently In no hurry to begin
operations, but seemed Inclined to wait
fuller advices from other markut points be
fore doing very much business. The result
was that the forenoon was well advanced
before the market bad really opened. The
late arrival Of a proportion of the -receipts
contributed to tho. lateness-of the market. .
When buyers and seller finally got to

HCKjrS The market opened with seventy
seven cara of hogs In slicht at thla nolnt
and with rery large recelpta at other mar
ket points, Chicago being credited with
no. 000 bead. At the aame time report from
all market points woie most discouraging
advices Indicating a decline of 16fiJ;,o, with
S ackers' message generally reporting a
rop of a flat fco at Chicago. Under suck
circumstances It waa not surprising that
buyers at this point were very bearish
right from the outset. A few hogs that
were wanted to till special orders or for
shipping account aold early at 14.4134 6.1.
but ee a rule packer were bidding around
$4.402t-t. 45 for the general run of bog, in
other words liVXc lower. Seller mad a
hard etroirle and were very backward
about taking of. o that It was well along
toward, mtodajr before the trade wao teaiiy
under war.
As It became' apparent that the re
ceipt were not a-larg a anticipated at
this point, while the demand. waa very fair,
packera raised some of the bid and the
hogs sold at $4 4 84.60 for tho bulk, with
top of $4 65. This waa 162ue Iowot than
last week close.

SHEEP The week started out with a fair
run of sheep and lambs, about fifty cars
being reported In. The arrivals consisted
largely of. tuff that had been on feed,
with nulla a liberal sprinkling of rangers.
The tnost of the fed stuff was only warmed
up Or half at and not very doslrahle from
a killer's standpoint. There was sumo
little Inquiry on the part of buyers for
choice killers that would do for the holiday
trade, but there waa very llttlo In sight
that could be made to answer thnt pur
pose. A good share of the rangers were
on the feeder order and hardly good enough
for killt-re.
.The market opened very slow and dull.
Feeder buyers picked up a few lambs that
were wanted to fill special orders, paying
$5.60 for good warmed-up stuff and as high
as $5.75 for a right choice lot carrying
considerable flesh. Packers announced
right fieai the outset that they must have
a liberal concession In accordance with the
reported break at Chicago, and unless they
Could securo uch concession they would
have, have to leave the stuff unbought.
Pollers were backward about taking off
with the result thnt the -.morning was
passed with very little trading being done,
and it was later than usual before the
niarlTet had really opened.
When buyers and sellers finally got down
to . business the offerings changed handa
slowly, but at prices that were generally
l'?)l5c lower than lust week. Some pretty
decent lambs sold to killers at $S.i5. aa
against $6.10 for the same kind last Mon
day. Yearlings at $4.55 were the same that
sold the day following Thanksgiving at
$4 75. .
