It Is alleged, does not war- rent certain rumors from Chicago to the effect that the big packers are forcing a corner on butter, eggs and produce. The packeis have been congratulating them I selves here that they have their storage practically free from produce of all de scriptions. Most of the butter now In the refrigerators has been consigned fully three months ago, and the same Is true of the eees. The amount still remaining In ,...,,... .,,..... ,., ,, " "" -. , - panles are buying only for Immediate or- 1 ders and show no activity at present. It would ap pear that the bottom has not bgen reached and there Is little danger of the packers becoming heavy buyers until the financial conditions become firm, and they are not at all Inclined to buy at present on a rap idly falling market. R. C. Howe of Armour A Co. said yes terday; "It don't look like we were making any attempt to secure the output of pro duce under the prevailing prices. Specula tion in prodtrre Is a hazsard at best. Our buying and selling In these lines naturally are large, even when relatively we secure but a fraction of the produce. This unccr talnty Is the probable reason for the re fusal )f the Chicago packers to purchase uch . 'oduce at present on a falling mar ket. It Is the same with hogs. Today tho prices Jumped up 25 cents. The reason Is purely local. We run short In a supply for local orders and we had to have some hogs, so we tid up." Keasous for Meat Prices. Managers II. S. Culver and R. C. Howe agreed In an explanation of certain outcries gainst tho corporation heard in mny qur ters locally, because tho packers have not reduced the prices of fresh meats, notably pork, in comparison with the prices at present paid for hogs. "The fact is." said Mr, Culver, "only 20 per cent of an animal killed for pork Is sold as' fresh meat. The rest Is cured, as hanis, bacon, salt or pic kled pork, with a percentage of lard. All of this 80 per cent finds no market for thirty days, and often not for six or eight months. If the people who are complaining so bitterly will look at tho quotations for hams, bacon or lard, they will find enough reduction to satisfy them. As soon ss the stringency came we cut down the killing of hogs, so as at least not to Increase the out put of cured pork. This cut off the supply of fresh pork, of which we cannot carry a large stock. The local demand remained as before, so the retailers begnn bidding up to get their supplies. It Is active bidding on a reduced supply which has kept the price of fresh pork up. Most of the salt pork In our cellars comes out of 6 cent hogs, and we have been wishing we had our cellars clear. Bidding on futures at present shows that we will do well to come out even on the season's storage, and It Is easily possible to lose heavily. If we can make the prices for fresh pork cover the losses on the cured meat we shall be more than satisfied. t "What is true of pork naturally holds with beef and mutton, although these com modities are not nearly so extensively cured. A general reduction In killing and a little reduction In consumption has kept the price of beef higher In the retail mar ket than the prices of live animals mlht appear to Justify. Ths retail market can not change as spontaneously as the live FURIOUS ITCHING Bleeding Sores Covered Her Whole Body After an Attack of Measles Nursed Every Night for Three Weeks Nothing Helped Her.
