The world's lesaers In the systematlo
and scientific fight upon tuberculosis, ths
great white plague which reaps such a
terrible harvest ot death from the human
race, will meet In Washington, D. C. Sep
tember 21 to October 12. 1908. This Is ths
fifth congress of Its kind and the first
one to be held In the United States. Ths
fact that the majority of the great physi
cian and eminent' scientists who are In
the van of this great humanitarian move
ment live In Europe accounts for the fact
that It In difficult to get one of the Inter,
national congresses on this side of the
water.
Nebraska physicians, scientists and char
ity workers have already begun prepara
tions to do .their part toward making the
congress a success and gottlng the most
possible good to the people. The following
committee has Just been appointed to co
operate with the national committee In
arousing Intereat In the big congress: Dr.
Charlos O. Glece, Holdredge, chairman;
Dr. A. S. von Mansfelde, Ashland; Dr. 8.
R. Towne. Omaha, i. P. Msrrts, secretsry
the Associated Charities. This committee
expects soon to hold a meeting for organl.

presenting the matter by means of tetters

to tuberculoids we must all combine our
strength sgalnst the common foe. 1 be
lieve Nebraska will take an aotlv Interest
In this congress, the first to be held here
and probably the last for a good number of

The cost, of the congress win far exceed
th revenue derived from fees The annual
fee of full members is $5, which entitles
tha member to copies of all the publi
cations made by' the congress. Associate
member pay . 82 a year and hav all
privilege except the right to vote and to
receive the printed "Transaction."
Th National Aasociatlon for the Study
and Prevention of Tuberculosis alone will
spend $100,000 on the expense of holding the
lntorrrutlonal congress in this country.

row, a wealthy retired merchant of Phila
delphia, who disappeared fnom Atlantic
City In October mysteriously snd was last
heard from through a letter written by him
on a Millard hotel letter bead under 41 (
of November 7. No person ef that name
had registered at the Millard on or any
where near that date. It Is thought, how
ever, he may have registered under an
sumed name. No one about the Millard
remembers seeing any such person. It Is
thought Morrow may be wandering about
the country under a temporary fit of In
sanity. Extraordinary eflorta are being
made la any event to find him If possible.

Passageway.
Opposition Is being shown to the proposed
vacation of Twenty-fifth avenue between
California and Burt streets. A request for
such vacation waa submitted to the council
Tuesday night and may come before the
remmlttee of the whole Monday afternoon.
The request was on behalf of Crelghtun
university and met with the approval ot
all owners of land on the part of the
avenue affected, but someone living north
and south of the part, which Is proposed
complain that the closing of this street
would make It Impossible to go from Cali
fornia to Burt street anywhere between
Twenty-third and Twenty-sixth streets. It
Is said this opposition might be withdrawn
If the proposed vacation Is deferred until
after Twenty-fourth street Is open for
travel between California and Burt street.

Blrhop Thomas O'Oorman spent the
greater part of the week on a trip out to

the Catholic churches In each place. He
j etorped at th towns of Pukwana, Cham
I berlaln and Kimball. At the latter place
I he concluded hi visit and there he waa
tendered a flue banquet by the cltlxens of
th town without regard to creed. Platra
were laid for 150 guests and a splendid
menu was served by the Catholic ladles.
Tha evening was devoted to apeechmaklng
and there waa a fine expression of good
cheer between the Catholic and Protestant
congregations of Kimball. It has been
a year or more since ihe bishop has been
able to get out In thst section of the
diocese and his coming was made' the
occasion of an Important affair. Bishop
O'Oorman has not made an official visit
lo Mitchell for nearly five years, and th
last time he came he told his Catholic
friends that . the next lime he came to
Mitchell It would be when they had a
new church for him to dedicate, and the
bishop has made his word good by re
maining away. The Catholics propose to
have the bishop come and see them, so
they hav their church In a fair way
for completion In the course of a couple
ojf months. When completed it will cost
them over $46,000 and will be the finest
Catholic structure In the state,

a big meeting of Knight ot Columbus,
which will b held In Sioux Falls next 8-in-day.
Among the noted men who will ad

bishop of th eastern diocese of Suth Da
kota. It I expected that large delegation
will be present from all neighboring coun
cils and those In charge are expecting that

Th coming on of th cold weather has
caught a number of building projects In
this city that will hav to be finished
through th winter, owing to the late
tart In the spring, and made later by
the delay of material through the sum
mer. Th Western National bank build
ing, four stories high and 60x142 feet, Is
Just about enclosed and a portion of the
plastering Is done. The Methodist church
building, which was scheduled for com
pletion early In December, will tak two
months to -finish, and th heating plant
Is Just being Installed. Th basement for
th new Congregational church la hardly
completed a yet, and th building will
ba finished next summer. There are a
number of houses In an unfinished state,
owing to the lack of help. Mitchell has
had a big year of building.
