REACTION IN IBON AND STEEL Condition of Trad Read leel Trast "d PeaasylToala Railroad Secur ities Down Interior Demand More Fands. NEW YORK. Nov. 14 -The sun k market ws decidedly weak t ome point todsy. Renewed liquidation of an urgent kind wa Inferred to be partlv responalble for this. It was auspected also that there wa a certain growth of activity on the part of the professional bear In the murket, the circulation from time to time of rumors of an unfavorable character, which failed of confirmation, tending to confirm this Im pression. The principal Immediate factor In the market was the emphatic testimony from the Iron and steel trade of the wide reac tion there and the belief that It Is to go further. The selling Induced by this de velopment naturally converged on the se curities of the United State Bteel corpora tion, but Pennsylvania railroad was sharply affected and In close sympathy. Pennsyl vania Is the railroad system which responds most directly to the mutations In the Iron and steel trade, owing to the large propor tion of Its tonrige. which la made up of materials for all branches of thnt trdo. The supposition was that some large In dividual accounts In these stocks were be ing closed out and the selling orders were believed to have their origin In the Iron and ateel centers. St. Paul was another dis tinct center of acute weakness, for causes individual to Itaelf, apparently, aa related stock were much les affected. The ex planation may be found in the approach of the date for payment of a large install ment of subscriptions to new 8t. Paul com mon and preferred stock. The amount of the new stock of both classes. In round numbers, I $100,000,000. and on December 1 subscriber are committed to the payment of a 20 per cent Installment, which calls, therefore, for approximately $30,000,000. It needs no explanation to understand that condition are not propitious for meeting such a requirement. Notwithstanding tho considerable sympathetic effect of these special center or weakness, a scrutiny of the general list will show that It was af fected comparatively little. The declara tion of the regular quarterly dividend on the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific gave some help In resistance to the de pression. Some high premiums were paid 011 currency again early In the day, but the tendency was toward relaxation. The point of Interest In this subject has shifted to the Interior, front which the urgent de mands are most responsible for present conditions. The opinion is heard amongst New York hankers that condition may be due to what is, in effect, hoarding by the Interior banks themselvea. which have been moved to strengthen their reserve position a a precautionary measure, but aeera to have overdone the matter In some ln etance. The drawing down of balance of Interior banks in New York deposltB Is a prima factor In the dislocation of the domestic exchange. The consequence is that no form of remittance is obtainable for payment of debts to New York mer chants, who are receiving checks on In terior hanks for that purpose, which ore received subject to collection by New York hanks, a process that proves slow under present circumstances. Reports published prior to the close of the Stock exchange of the nature of the negotiations under way for u large Sum of gold for New York from the Hank of France were somewhat vague. Tho very strong statement of th4 Bank of England, In spite of the large supplies of gold fur nished to New York, waa accepted as highly encouraging. The accompanying decline to day in the French bank's bullion holdings was evidence that Paris hud been helping London to supply the New York demand. The recall of hi per cent of the government deposlta with the New York banks 1n small daily Installment was not considered of great Importance in view of the liifh' of gold to New York. Some of today's liqui dation was of accounts taken over from Involved house to save them . from dis aster during the recent troubled period. Bond were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $3,211,000. A little later hogs began selling 15'ii2oo luger than the low limo yesterday. To day'a advance carries the market back to a point that is u xhailc higher than Tues day's murket. but mill l.-aves It il..se to 10e lower ihan Monday. To put it another way, the average of the market today waa not far from where It was at the close of last week. Some late train which came In near midday sold 2ofr26c higher than yesterday's general market; that 1. largely at f4.9o'ir 4.9i or better, with a top at f5.of. The buik of all the hogs brought f4.sffl4.90, with some of the light, hogs selling down to 14.75 or under. The price today depended not so much upon the quality as upon the time of day that they were sold. Thus hogs that aold at f4.754.8o In the morning brought 4 9.n4 i5 late.
