Oct. 2.-Qlet condition reigned throughout the brief session of the Stock exchange today. Owing to the rule, of procedure there by which loans made on Friday carry over until Monday of the following week, the borrowing of money was to a great exte-nt In abeyance. The market was active and the Influence toward repression of speculative activity or deal- still strong, The bank statement caused a momentary wavering, a report of a deficit below the legal reservo exercising an Inevitable sen timental Influence. Consideration .of the statement detracted from Its depressing Influence, In view of the extraordinary events of the week, and the complicated cross currents in the situation, the de crease of lens than $13,000,000 In the reserve held, wa considered not Immoderate. The necessity of the situation and the courage ous measures of relief adopted wer ex planatory of the $1C,814,800 loan expansion. It wss fortunate under the circumstances that the clearing house banks had started the week with so considerable a surplus reserve as $11,182,650. The bank statement was regarded, therefore, as allowing a re assiirlng degree; of strength in th banking position. For the conservation of this po sition the decision of the United Clearing house today to Issue clearing house cer tificates seems to offer entire security. By acceptances between the banks of these certificates for settlement of debit bal ances, the preservation of the cash de posits from depletion' Is assured. The de termination of the New York Savings hanks to avail themselves of the permitted requirement of sixty days' notice of with drawals forms another safeguard. Finally, the Inauguration of gold Imports opened a channel of replenishment of the basis of banking credits which promises effective relief. The Joint effect of these actors, was the feeling of encouragement with which the week closed In Wall street. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,2fi6,00O. For the week the reoelpta show very little change a com pared with tha previous weak, but a very heavy gain over the corresponding week of a year ago. The market on all kinds of cattle has suffered a severe reverse, the unsettled condition prevailing In financial circles being reflected In th live stock market. In spit of the fact that recelpta of cat tle this week hav been large, the supply ot beef steer was at no time heavy. Btlll th demand on th part of packers waa ex tremely light, so much so In fact that had it not been Tor th support given by out side buyers it would have been a hard matter on soma days to have fonud an outlet for the receipts. As it waa, prices broke rapidly her in common with the market at all other selling points and at the close of tha week fat cattle are gen erally right at 60c lower than a week. ago. A a matter or course, mere naa oeen j mora or less unevenness so that while . soma kind of cattle and some individual sales hav not shown that much decline, others have shown still more. What has been said regarding the mar ket on beef steers would apply In large art to cowa and heifers, with this dlf urence. that the receipts of th latter hav been large all the week. It wa the heav iest decline experienced In a long time ana It 1 safe to say that cow stuff Is selling at th lowest point touched this year. The sharp decline in me market seemed to induce pretty free buying on the part of feeder, in fact a good many would- be feeder buyer have' been holding back waiting for a break In prices before filling their order and many of them took ad vantage of the opportunity offered this week. But in spite of free buying, th market on feeders at the clos of the week la generally 26o lower, with soms - kinds undoubtedly 6O0 lower. On the other hand, strictly choice or fancy cattle have tn soms case ahown comparatively little loss. Considering th Urge receipt of feed er a very fair clearance was made. This wa hardly enough to really make a market, but in addition to the fresh recelpis tnt-ie wer twelve car carried over from yesterday. The market opened 6c higher with very little buying ou the part of psckera. In fact, ther was really only one packer In the market to any extent. The most of th buying wa done by shippers who had or ders to fill. After a doxen or fifteen loads had changed hands th trade practically came to a standstill, cankers leaving: tha si lis and not trying to ao any further . . ousiness. jaier un uippwra- en ureu iresn orders and cleaned up the balanco of th offerings at the advance noted above. Thus th bulk ot tne nog oia at 40.4t1au.oo, nun a top at 5. 60. A phenomenal break has taken place In hog values this week, th decline being the heaviest experienced In a great while. Fackera have been very weak tniyer, both tier and at all other market point, with th result that a heavy decline In prices haB taken place everywhere. Besides being bearish In their views the amount of their purchases has been much smaller than usual, which of Itself wa sufficient to give th market downward tendency. Owing to the general lack of buying support, a well as th bearish tendency of packer, th market at the close of the week Is safely 2fn4io lower than last week. As a mattei of course some kinds have shown a 1 , . 1 .1 when prices are going down bill rapidly there has been more or less unevenmsa to the trade. Thus something that packers Just happen to need might not sell jo very much lower, while something else equally good would have to sell a good deal lower. The market on feeder came In tor Its share of the decline. Th trade on most days was Inclined to be rather dull, buyers throughout the week acting on the bear side. Still price were very uneven and there were plenty of cases where good feed ers which happened to find favor In the eye or country buyers sola at stesny prices, even a late as the middle of the seek Nntwlthat.nHlnir Ihl. th. market continued down hill rapidly and at th c!oe of th week Is 26 40c lower than last week. Otherwise trade Is active, J wholesale grocors being too busy to quote ! prices, snd In need of help to get the gooiis I from warehouse to trains. Similar con- , dltlons hav existed In the hardware linos Predictions are made by dealers In all lines that there must soon be a break In prices. Thle bring the price of th f -Ingham In reds up to the level of tapl ndlgoes and other llnea. A similar e.ondl tlon exists In staple woven shirtings. - Lining Not In Demand. Trade in bleached good Is yery tjulet, while the dry goods men of Omaha say they ar selling no cambrlo linings. The.r are practically off the market, and there. Is little hope of a demand for lining In tho future. Dealer say few dresses are lined with cambric and the new method ot making women's clothe ha demoralised the trade on lining. In underwear and hoalery th situation 1 Interesting. It Iibb kept th manufacturer busy mixing cotton with the best of all wool underwear In order to keep the price' down. "A pure wool law would not be a bad thing," said a dealer till week, "but both consumer and retailer are respon sible for tho mixing of cotton with tha best of wool. They get In the habit of pay ing about so much per doxen for under wear, and they don't want to go higher. ' The customer gets underwear from one year to another for a certain price, and It Is hard for the dealer to secure more. The manuiaclurer accommodates both by leav. Ing the price the same, but making a gar ment with more cotton In It." Pay Hlgn (or Hosiery. But prlcea of underwear are tip, ami dealer are having a hard time to supply the trade for duplicate order. In hosiery a similar "onditlon exists. There are no "cheap cotton hose" In the Omaha market. The cheap Oie are no longer cheap. In other lines of hi,icry. which are now being sold for next summer, the tendency Is to more expensive wear, especially In women's hose. These will not be so fancy, but of better quality and higher price. Shirtings are sold out for next year. Soma orders will have to be cancelled. Dealer and manufacturers are doing their best to git goods, but every niece comes with a BtrUKule. The mercerised shirts are the populsr ones for hiai car. uie coiona ehlrt with the stiff bosom has followed the paper collar and neck handkerchief, and may be offered by some dealer, but ar not manufactured nor sold by th first clasg houses of Omaha. Jn grocery lines some buyers are In tha market for holiday specials, but the retail era are busy with the heavy fall trad and orders for staple goods preclude any thing else at the present time. Notice hag been received that the tomato packing sea Bon Is closed, except In a few remot fac tories. Ouesse received by grocer ar placed at from 8,500,000 to 9,600,000 case. This I about th full pack, which wa pre dicted and should make the prle easy. Slight Changes In Drng Frier. Dealers In drug are buying goods In A' hand-to-mouth manner and do not appear to be Interested In the slight changes re corded in opium, salad oil, balm of Otlead buds or cocoa butter. Opium la higher, but there la a lack of demand for it. The d te rn and for quinine shows no Increase, and the market ha developed nothing In th way of new features. Prices on some olive oils have been reduced from a cent to a cent and a half. Cocoa butter Is gener ally firm, but the higher prices have acted aa more or less of a restraint upon the buy ing Interests. In a limited way, German goods can be had at 48 cents, but higher prices are generally asked.
