NKW YORK, Oct. 24.-The cheerful spirit
In which operations began on the New Votk
Stock exchange today had given place to
conditions that were fast slipping Into de
moralization when the announcement came
that t26.o0O.00O had been sent In to lend on
call. This brought prompt relief from
a tension thst had grown up In the stock
msrket. owing to the dearth of money for
loans on call, fiuch supplies ss were sent
In were Inadequate of J he holders of the
securities and heavy sacrifices were being
made to secure funds. Forced liquidation
at various points had been in evidence at
various points in the list all day, one
two stocks running off even at the

nuoyant rise. As the dav progressed per
sons standing for loans found themselves
In sn unstable position. The heaping up of
resources toward the banking poalllon
seemed to be very encouraging. The t.
000,000 of relief probably saved the market
from disaster and the rebound which fol
lowed was convulsive. The market closed
In some confuslun after this rslly, but the
tone was strong In the main up to tlm

Ing the transformation In the situation bv
rising over last night's level. These stocks
were notably firm all day, although the
sinking fund bonds began to he acutely
affected by the pressure of liquidation late
In the day. The bond market was more
responsive to the pressure of liquidation
than at any time heretofore during the
present troubles. High grade securities
were sold apparently to provide means for
protection of such other stocks as were
totally unsalable. In spite of tho acute de
pression of tho stock market there was nt j
nrne a leeung oi encouragement tor
the hope that the threatened hanking
crisis had been avoided. Tho suspension
of several smaller banking Institutions In
the city, hut far removed from the flnsn
clal district, did not Impair this feeling.
The determination of the great powers
amongst the trust companies to stand for
the deficiencies was regarded as their sal
vation. The Btock market Itself closed In
a sudden revulsion of sentiment from the
tone almost of despair into which It hnd

I hero were plenty of feeders in the yards,
n good many having boon carried over
from vesierilay in addition to the fresli
receipt's. The lower prices have attracted
free cojr.try buying, bin not enough to
clean up the supply. Today there seemed
to be some Utile Inquiry for right good
feeders at prices not to very much lower,
but the general market was slow anu
lower. It In safe to say that the general
run of feeding cattle and stockers are
right at 25c lower for the week so far.

SHEEP Receipts this morning were
quite liberal, both here and at Chicago.
In fuel receipts were every where larger
than necessary lo meet the requirements
of the demand sntl larger than sellers
would like to see at a time when prices
on all kinds of live stock are breaking
dovn so rauldlv.
Tls supply of killers this morning, both
sheen and lambs, wss Quite limited, but
so was the demand. Packers did not seem
to want very many sheop und were In no
hurry to fill wliMt orders they did have,
feeling doubtless that they might be able
lo buy them cheaper later on. This
naturally made the trade on fat stuff slow
and dull from start to finish. The Chi
cago market was posted early as loti'-'fio
lower and packers' messages were also
very bearish. The feeling here In con
sequence was that killers ought to sell
15c to 2Cc lower at this point to be In line
with other markets, which have been
breaking down rapldlv thle week. Jlll
packers did not in all cases succeed in
tftklng off that much, owing to the fact
that receipts were so moderate. To sav
the least. It was a very wettk market, with
the tendency of values steadily downwsrd.
The great big bulk of tho receipts con
sisted of feeders, the snme as every dav
of late. Fortunately there was quite a
little country demand and buyers opened
the market by plcklntr out here and ther
strings of sheep and lamha that hanpenet'
to suit them at good steady nilces. In fae'
now and then there was a shIc that. I'
anything, looked stronger Tills, however
was not In accordance with the genera'
situation, as all the conditions seemed tc
favor a lower marl'et. After the more
urgent orders were filled, the trade became
