s The wheaf market w 'nervou all day
and had many aharp declines and upturn.
Two Important lnfluenoea struggled for the'
control. The one was the eastern financial
situation and the-local fear of poesiblo
complication growing? out of it. and the
other balpg the atrength of the foreign

The cash market at Kansas City, Minne

The tight money market In the northwest

The corn market In general followed th
lead of wheat, although the situation In the
cash market waa different. Eastern buyer
desired to purchase corn subject to unusual
financial condition, which were not ac

over the corn belt and the prediction or it

The trade In provision wa large, but

packer and otttalde apeculatora aold the

test waa a strong bear factor. A final
break of Sfxg'SOo In the price of live hogs

NEW YORK. Oct. 2.1 Violent pcrtui ba
llon In today toek market was taken
for granted In view of the serious nnaire
of the day' new, both from the irusi
company and Industrial field. The sen
sitiveness of the market, as a barometer
of the conditions, might hnve left It open,
suppose bly. ti even mote violent tlisuriter.
In view of the seriousness of the new.
Aa a matter of fact, there was a con
siderable end conspicuous fragment of tne
list of securities which was but slightly
ffected by the acute depression at other
points and by the severe stringency of
money. The resistance of these olnts In
the list mUKt have been due to protective
measures by money resources adequate to
effect this end. Their comparative stability
suKgrsted something of suspense, also. In
the attitude of waiting fir the working
out of "measures to fortify the Situation.
The eager attention of the whole of the
financial community converged on the prtg
rees of these measures, or on what might
he the final decision of the great flnanc.al
and banking power who had the matter in
band. It was felt that on the decision or
theao conferences might hinge the restric
tion of the field of the trouble which have
thrown confusion Into llnanclal affairs,
The failure of the Knickerbocker Trust
company to reopen Its doors today and
the now run precipitated on the Trust
Company of America by Its request for
assiatance front other Institutlona, offered
the surface evidence of the trouble Then
came the announcement of the closing of
the Pittsburg Stock exchange ami the re
ported embarrassment of industrial com
panies as a cause.. The direct f rce of
this latter factor on the lock murket was
a testimony to the Importance of Pitts
burg In speculative activity. Sale of va
rious stock for Pittsburg account In New
York were enormous and made a prime
influence in the weakness of the Westlr.g

In the urgent liquidation. The repot ted finan
cial embarrassment of the company was
the sufficient explanation. General Elec
tric was In close sympathy, owing to the
analogous business field of the two com
panies. The effect of the Westlnghouse
Incident was particularly severe on the
Industrial seen r I tie generally, and many
of. these disclosed the artificial character
of t,M a quotation which have been estab
lished for them and the narrow market
existing, for any genuine liquidation In
them. Support In thi part of the list

other securities to pay off loan. It wa
borrowing of an urgency such aa thi that
forced the high call loan rate at the
Stock exchange. A rate of 90 per cent
waa made on a small loan. Apparently
the fear of the effect from a contraction
of credits applied more to enterprise of
an Industrial nature than tor the transpor

compared With yestertlay. bjt Still there
was a very weak undertone ami the trad
as a whnl wa very slow.
The market on feeder lrted out about
where It left off yesterday, but It ws very
evident right from the beginning that any
changes would be In buyers' Interests. The
more desirable of the fresh receipts nilgai
he quoted generally steady, but on tne
other hand, the holdovers and the less de-
lrMe of the fresh receipt were generally
little lower than yesterday. It is sura
to quote feeder lamb of best quality 2fcc
lower than th high point last week, with
other kind ranging from ??. to 50c lower.
Feeder wethers and yearlings pave not
shown aa a rule as much decline a have
lamb, for the reon tht they have been
In very much lighter upply.
The only apparent reason for th sharp
break In the feeder market I the prevalent
feeling that feeder were altogether too
high. The falling off in the country demand
made It possible for buyer to pound the
market down in accordance with thi pre
vailing Idea. Hence It la that feeder are
selling at the lowest point touched In a
long time.

were disposed to stand around and diseut
the financial condition while waiting for

any buyer went out into the yards and
after midday before any business of any
