CHICAGO Gn.L AND PROVISIONS
Featares of tka Trading; and Closlaat
FYleeS cm Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. Oct. 16. Lower cables and
ravomble weather for threshing In the
northwest caused, weaknesa today In the
local wheat market. At the close the De
cember delivery wag off lc. Corn was also
down lc. Oats -were "40 lower. Provisions
were 7V4o to lOo lower.
Tbe wheat market opened weak because
of declines at nearly all of the European
grain centers. Fair weather' In the north
west also exerted a depressing Influence,.
Durln the early, part pf the day the mar
ket waa very nervous, owing to the anxiety
of shorts, but In the last half of the ses-
N E W YORK. Oct. . There were a ;
numtier of qui -k transformations In the ;
stock market today, which proved exceed- .
Ina-ly unsettling to sentiment. The squall
which struck the market about 2 o'clock
represented a complete reversal of the
form of the first hour, when there waa a
general furling of relief and growing con
fidence that the market hud righted Itself
and placed most of Its troubles behind.
W hen prices of some of the leading stocks
began to break a point at a time about
3 o'clock the most serious apprehensions
were felt. Belling of stocks on such ter ns
presented no good to the market, and fears
that have been current for several dasi
that some trouble was overhanging were '
revived 111 full force.
The rumors regarding the trouble became j
more specific and more centered today, !
They were given direction by tho events
of the last few days In the curb market
and the extraordinary performances there
of Cnlted Copper stock. The stock dropped
back to 15 today, after having been run
ning up and down the scale to as high as
BO for two days. The exlstenee of a market
pool In the stock and published warning"
against the transfer of some specific hold
ings opened the way to the deduction of
International disagreement In the conduct ,
01 tne pool. Beyond inese racis informa
tion was vague, but enough was discerned
to locate the aource of the pressure of the
market with some degree of accuracy. The
subject lost some of Its terrors with the
more definite outline, but the contingencies
suggested were sufficiently grave to sub
merge the cheerfulness which had been
rising early In the day.
Call money was firmer 1n tone, partly
In connection with the flurry In the stork
market. The transfer of JdOO.OiiO to 8an
Francisco through tho subtreasury opened
up a fresh demand on bank reserves and
served as an offset to the week'a contri
bution to the hanks on subtreasury opera
tions, which have run to upwards of !,,
Ooo. Announcement waa made of an offer
by a banking house to take over at par
t l.OOO.OOO of the Pennsylvania notes, matur
ing on November 1. the total amounting
to 36,000,000. Ku.-ids are In hand from tho

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were quite liberal, 280 cars being reported
In. This makes the receipts for the week
26,277 head, which Is slightly smaller than
the very large runs of last week and a
year ago. ..
The market on strictly good beet catgw
did not show very much change, being
generally quoted about steady with yester
day. On the other hand, there was a weak
feeling on anything that was not good and
the trade waa slow In addition on that
kind. While the good grades aold In fair
season, it was late before the leas desir
able kinda were all disposed of.
The tendency on the cow ana neuer mai
ket seemed to be easier, in xaci,
.ulemneii were Quoting It quite a
lower, especially those who were fortunate
In having secured steady prices yesterday.
On the other hand, aellers who were forced
to take off yeslerday did not see very
much difference today. Perhaps the best
wey to quote the market would be to cull
It about steady on the beat grades and
alow to a little lower on other kinds.
Buyers were still looking for strictly good
feeders, but the feeling on the common and
Inferior grades was slow, with the trade
slow and dull. The fact Is. speculators
and yard traders have been very free buy
ers In anticipation of a large country de
munH and tho most of them found them
selves pretty well loaded up with cattle
this morning which they had not been able
to dispose of. Hence they were a little
cautious this morning and were Inclined to
SI I EEP Receipts were quite liberal this
mnrnltig. seventv-flve cars being reported,
which makes the total for the week larger
than for the corresixintllng days of last
week. As noted yisterday. there was a
goid buying demand, both for killers and
feeders, and when the market closed prac
tically everything was disposed of. only a
few being carried over.
The market this morning opened where
cars of stock left off yesterday and tneis was realty
ill'l fiiiiuptll uiHiit i'1 o -ecitii nit- it. ..
As has been the case every day for some
little time back, the supply of killers, both
sheep and latt bs, was very limited, whllo
there was at the same time a good buying
demand. Tills means that the market on
killers was In a vei'y satisfactory condition
for the sellers, fiillv steady prices being
maintained. A rretty decent kind of lambs
sold up to Si. with a few head of natives
at S7.1o. Pretty fair ewes brought 85.
There were a good many country buyers
looking for feeder sheep and lambs and
the market on that kind was the ssme as
It has been almost every day at this point,
namely, fairly active, with prices entlr-
satisfactory to owners. To quote It aa
good, steady, active market would ni
nearly describe the situation.
Quotations on good to choice killers:

better prices than packers will pay. '

PAPER BURIED SCORE OF YEARS
Copy ot The Rrr Well Preserre.l
Fonnd In Ihe Labor
Temple.
A copy of the Omaha Dally Bee, dated
June 11. 18MI. was unearthed during the re
pairing of the Labor temple Wednesday
and while it was sere and yellow from Us)
twenty-one years' repose, it was well pre
served. It consists of eight pages of the
regulation size of Ihe evening paper at that
time. Since then the name of the evening
edition has been changed from the "Dally
Bee" to the "Evening Bee." the "Dally
Deo." now being the morning edition.
Another difference between The Bee of
twenty-one years ago and The Bee of to
dayIs the presence of advertising on the
first page of the former, the old paptr fion.
tainlng almost three columns of display ad
vertising on the trout page.
It Is significant that the leading editorial
In the paper relates to a fight" for paving
and sidewalk laying: which la still going
on. The editorial advocates the laying ot
alagolltlhlc or other Improved sidewalks In
place of the wooden walks on Farnam
street and suggests that block owners who
complain they cannot afford. It ought tt
sell their property and buy acre lots out-s:-i
of the city.
One of the advertisements on the
front page Is . tor lotg In Hawthorn
addition between Davenport and Cass
streets and Thirty-second gnd Thirty-fifth
streets. The advertisement declares that
within a very short time the addition can
be reached by both cable and horse car.
Ixits were selling then for from 8700 to
S1.000, and the prices quoted for other, real
estate Indicates a real boom was on at the
time.
IThat The Bee wns In the advance guard
In the affairs of the party is shown by
an editorial entitled, "Lot the Issue Be
Made," whk-h advocates the nomination of
a successor to United States Senator Van
Wyck by the state convention. The tu
torial declares only in this way can the)
rank and file of the party be given a voice
In the selection of senator. It was only a
few years ago that this method of naming
candidates for senator was adopted by the
party.
The growth of the paper In circulation
Is shown by a comparison of the circulation
statement. The statement of the cashier
shows the average circulation of tho morn
ing edition for the week was 4,o4 and for
the evening edition 5,821. The average at
present Is over 36,000 a day.
