The Rome hotel was the scene of a gay social function last evening when Rome Miller threw his big new hostelery open for the Inspection of more than 1,000 Invited guests. The guests were given the freedom of the building from cellar to roof and from, kitchen to ball . room. The people began coming at t o'clock ad from that time until a lata hour the human stream con tinued to flow. The receiving line was formed In the broad and high eelled promenade leading from the lobby to the main dining room. This was profusely decorated with ferns and other greenery, potted plants and bouquets of cut flowers presented to Mr.' Miller on this occasion. A great horseshoe executed tn flowers of the horse show col ors occupied .a prominent position on a bank of green. Ribbons and draplngs of ths horse show colors were In evidence everywhere. In - the receiving line were Mr. and Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Klerstead and Dr. and Mrs. H. A. Waggoner. C. M. Wllhelm presented the guests to the hosts. Punch bow is were distributed at points of vantage. Fifty waiters served the guests. The bell boys were resplendent in their nevj uniforms The entire house was brilliantly lighted up In every department. - The elegant dining room and cafe proved an especial attrac tion to the visitors and on the floor of the ball room, which Is one of the finest In the west, there was dancing all tfvenlng. I Sev eral of the finest rooms and suites of rooms In the building were open for Inspection. The kitchen with all Its modern machinery for the speedy and cleanly conducting of the culinary operations of a great estab lishment was a place which attracted many. Ths most unique thing in the hotel Is the "vineyard." This Is located In the base ment. It is a sort of cross between a rathkeller and a Flemish cafe. The ap proach to It Is beneath low monastic arches seemingly of solid stone. There a fountain plays and a heavy oakon door In the wall gives promise of ths wine vaults beyond. The 'Vineyard' proper Is a long room ar-rang-Ml to represent a grape arbor. There Is a trellis overhead from which hang clusters of grapes and the vines and leaves are visible on ths lattice work at the sides. There are many cosy nooks and corners In the place and the side walls are painted tn soft, restful tints. Over all Is shed a dim, crepuscular light. Kellogg, conducting the fedtral suit against the Standard Oil company, today. when Mr. Trainor, taking the witness Stand In the oil suit, testified that the money had never been paid to him and that he had never heard of the account. The Southern's books show that -unsigned vouchers were received for these loans and that the money was never handed back to the company. . Mr. Trainor said that he was formerly crude oil purchasing agent f&r tha Stand ard Oil company of New York, and as such he purchased all the oil and sold It to the refineries. He said he acted In a similar capacity now for the Standard OH company of New Jersey. Mr. Kellogg called Mr. , Trainor's atten tion to the various loans, amounting to over $20,000,000, which were made by ths Southern Pipe Line company and charged to "P. 8. Trainor" and asked him to tell concerning the loans. "I do not know anything about these loans," answered Mr. Trainor. "I had an oil account with the Southern, but no money account. I never gave them any vouchers and never heard anything- about the loans." Mr. Trainor said that he fixed the pries paid for crude oil after consulting with John D. Archbold, vice president of ths Standard. These consultations were held daily, Mr. Trainor said, and after they were over he made publlo tha market price of crude oil. H. M. Tllford. treasurer of the Stand ard Oil company of California, and presi dent of the Continental Oil company, when asked to produce the reports of the Con tinental company, testified that whenever a new report was received ha Invariably destroyed the old one.
