There was no con siderable revival of speculstlve Interest In today's stock msrket, snd Its surfsce was unruffled by any striking movement or any Imports nt event. The only feature wss an announcement of an extra dividend disbursement to Great Northern stock holders. This proved to be the roslnstsy of the narrow msrket and served ss an obstacle to the efforts mad early In tha session by the professional trsders to ex tend the dragging downward movement which est In on Saturday after the ap pearance of the bank statement. The Great Northern plum counteracted the effect of some of the recent rather gloomy public utterances by the head of the system, which hsve weighed on the securities of his companies. Similar out givings were reported from the head of the Atchison system today, but with slight effect on the securities of that system. The professional bears amongst the trad ers met prsctlcal experience to prove that holders of securities are not so discouraged ss to be willing to part with them at further sacrtflce. and the tentative opera tions by the bears sre not extended fsr. Ststistics completed by the Journal of Com merce throw further light on the troubles through which the msrket has been ob liged to pass In Its showing of new se curities for the nine months of the cur rent yesr, reaching the unparalleled totsl of 81.828.886,600, exclusive of government bonds, but Including munlclpsl issues. The year's market has been burdened, In ad dition, with the heavy issues made towsrd ths end of last year, one-fifth of last year's totsl coming in December. The September Issues this yesr were comparatively light and the prospect Is for a further decline In aaklngs for new capital for the rest of this yesr. Ths Saturday bank ststement wss not lost sight of,' although Ita influence for active depressions waa resisted. With the surplus over the legal reserve down 82.248.076, and with the tide of the currency movement to the Interior In full flood, there Is small disposition to risk exten sion of credits for taking on securities on margin. In London the Bank of Eng land divided the gold supply In the msrket with Paris, but wss obliged to advance the price of gold to secure so much. Feel ing fa London appears to be tranquil, how ever. British consols hsve msde a sub stantial recovery and Investment senti ment In London is reported Improved. The market rate of discount declined in Ber lin. There was some sensatlveness shown to reports of reduction of working forces In some lines of Industry. Railrosd traffic officials admitted some Irregularity in the business outlook, but reports from east and wesr agreed In the pressure of traffic offering up to the limits of available equip ment, and In some caaea, beyond. Strength In the wheat market was associated with reports of urgent foreign demand and so waa of small effect on stocks. Ths Influ ence of a further reduction In quotations for copper at the Metal exchange was overcome. Notwlthstsndlng the dullness of the market ths tone became distinctly strong at the last.
