The outlook for tomatoes is brighter than
It has been this season. Reports from
many canning centers refute former reports
by the announcement that the output Is
likely to be as large as In former years.
The quality of the fruit Is also good.
Sardines were advanced 6c early In the
week and Indications are for a further ad
vanc. Salmon Is strong and advancing.
Coffee Is quiet. Prices on sll of the well
known Prssll rossted brands are the ssme.
A limited stock of new teas Is on the
market, the 'demand being active and the
price well maintained.
No new offerings of southern lioe have
been made In th last week and the situa
tion la considered serious. Storms two or
three weeks ago did great damage to. the
rice fields of Louisiana and Texas.
rricea continue strong . on dried fruits,
though there has leen no change. . The Cal.
Ifornla crop of prunes Is short Snd Is now
estimated not to exceed hn.OCO.noo pounds.
No reliable estimates have been -made on
th Oregon output.
There is considerable difference of opinion
in local dried fruit circles over the necessity
existing for the sulptvirlna of apricots and
peaches during the process of curing, but
there seems to be no difference JDt opinion
among jobbers on the question of buying
sulphurated fruits under the conditions that
Jiow exist. The Jobber fears he will not
be sufficiently protected tinder the packers'
guaranty, and in spite of the assurance by
James Wilson, secretary of agriculture-,
that the departmental ruling will not be
carried out In-the case of p aches and ap
ricots, the buyers for the Jobbing grocery
houses are not buying the varieties of fruit
montloned.
In advice from the const It Is made 'clear
that the rnckera are buying peaches from
the growers with caution ami ar rejecting
such stock as shows oversulphurlng. It is
pointed out. too, that the percentage of de
liveries showtns less than the maximum
quantity of sulphur used 35-l,0 per Cent
la comparatively small.
During the week there was considerable
Interest taken In the gum situation, owing
to a report from Egypt Indicating sharp
advances In the prices of varnish. It is
aa'd that altosethcr only 2,000 bales are
avauanie to supply the demand of Europe
and America. There has been a decline In
the price of ramphor of 4 conts. Quinine
Is much stronger and indications point
toward advances. Opium remains the same
aa last quoted 87 the minimum price in
caee lots. There Is an advancing market
on Golden Seal, on Jamaica ginger and
senega root. Indications are that there will
be lower prices fcr pepriermlht oil and ad
vances on oil of anise arid Messina essences.
During the early part of the week there
was a little weakness In the turpentine
rr.srket, though there was no disposition to
lower prices. There has been steady Im
provement In ,the linseed oil market, with
no change In prlcea

In 'the yard thi morning to talk about,
tha market being practically bare, a usual
oh a Saturday.. For the week the receipts
show a small decrease as compared with
last week, but about on a par with a year
ago. ...
No great change has taken place In the
market . for corn-fed. beeves during the
week. While there have been low day
and high day, the' market at the close of
tho week Is about where it was on week
ago. The highest price paid during the
week was $7.00. Or. the other hand, ran
beef steers have shown some strength, es
pecially during the last half of the week.
Price hare firmed up under the Influence
of a good demand and moderate receipt

than one week ago. During the last half
of the week the trade was reasonably act

During the latter half of th week the
market on ' cow and tielfers has shown
more activity than for soma day back
and price have been given an upward
tendency. At the close ot the week the
market is safely 25o higher than one week
ago, with the feeling very .ood. As
mutter of course, the advance ha been the
most noticeable on the beter grades, choice
range helfurs selling up to $4.50g4.60 on
Friday..
Blockers and feeders sold - very wall at
the beginning of the week and the market
was. If Snyfnlnjr, a'littlu u anger. With
liberal receipts of cattle ot that kind and
with the country not buying any too freely,
a lower tendency has characterized the
trade during the latter half of the week.
At the close tt Is safo to quote the gen
eral run of feeders aa 10gac lower than
last week. Still shippers must understand
that current prices aro high even at the
decline and the market, viewed from a
seller's standpoint. Is by no means bad.

SHEEP There were no fresh Bheep 04
lambs on sale this morning, and nothing to
make a market. For the week the receipt
have been the heaviest of the season to
date, bring even larger than a year agtv
In spile of the very large receipts the
market as a whole has been Is very satis
fsctory condition, due In large part t
Ihe free buying on the part of feeders.
The demand for feeder sheep and lamb
has been so good all the week that th
great big bulk of the receipts hv sold
to the feeder buyers at better Trices thn
packer were willing to pay. During th
greater part of th week anything that the
feeders could use, both sheep and lambs,
commanded ful" steady prices. At the
close of the week a good many potmtry
buyer go home to spend Punday, thus re
ducing to some extent the demand, and
for this reason the demand Is never so
strong at the close of the week, and price
naturally ease nrf a I'ttle s''H th -nrt
that could be said of the market would h
in rsll it closing weak to 10c lower. Opera
predicting a continuation of the good de
mand for feeders, and hence' good price
throughout the season. As a matter of
fact, they all expect to see weak spot oc
casionally, but no one I looking for any
material or long onntlnurd break In values.
With eastern markets showing consider
able declines . on fst sheep and lambs.
fackrrs at this point were rather hearten
n their view and have succeeded In
giving values on fat sheep and lamb a
downward tendency. Still the bresk ha
not been, very Ueavy, the totai decline for
the week being only lOifl-V;. FA-en after
the decline prices are very eatlsfactory
and the trade as a whole has been In a
good healthy condition all the, week.
