CniCAOO ORA15T AND PROVIIOS
Featares of tha Tradlnar and Closing;
Prices oo Board of Trade.
CHICAOO, Aug. I. The government crop
report onset the etTeet or the strike or
the telogrHpliera In the local wheat market
today, and caused a strong close to what
had been up to that time a weak market.
At the closo wheat for September delivery
was up He. Corn was So higher. Oats
wore down Mc. Provisions were 7H'810o to
loc higher.
The official report regarding the condi
tion of spring sown wheat was made pub-
lie Jlfteon mlnutea before the close of the
market and showed a condition of 79.4,,
compared witn 6T.2 on July 1. Immediately
after the appearance of the report prices
advanced sharply and the closing quo
tations were closo to the highest point of
. the day. During the greater part of the
et1on.- however, the market was Wenk
1 Luse oS tha: strike of the telegraph op
efUtors and lower prices at Liverpool. Local
longs sold freely and there teas also heavy
felling by commission, bonnes. Much of
he usual statistics was missing because
of itheMMire trouble, and this had a ten
dency to restrict trade. September opened '
a shade lower to tVftVio higher at 8.V!c to
88V, sold off to 8Hc and then advanced
to 88YtC The close was. at 88iI.X8e.
Clearances and primary receipts were not
available hea! of the strike. Minneap
olis. Duluth and Chicago reported receipts
of 470 oars, against 332 cars last week and
63) cars on year ago. '
The corn market was affected in a man
ner similar to wheat by the crop report,
'sentiment In the pit being bearish until
late In the day. The rally In wheat, how
ever, Imparted .considerable strength to
corn and the market became firmer late
In the day. The report placed the condi
tion of the crop at 82.8, against 80.3 ona
month ago. The close was strong. Sep
tember opened unchanged at 64c, sold
off to 64e and then advanced to SSH,e,
where It closed. T.ncnllv the receipts were
SCO para, with 7 of contract grade.
The oats market opi ned strong on an ac
tive demand hy nhorts, which were based
on unfavorable weather for the new crop.
The advance brought out heavy realising
sales, which resulted In a severe slump.
The market failed to respond to the ad
Vanes In wheat and corn, and closed aU
est a the lov.nt point. The govern
ment crop report had little effect because
of the fact that It had been largely dis
counted. The report placed the condition
at 76.6, as against 81 on July 1. September
opened Ho to Ho higher, at 4M4c to 46'4,c,
advanced to 46Vw, and then broke to 46c.

the price of live hogs. At the close Sep
tember pork was up ITHc at 16.35. Lard

The' remarkable .' . '
of ths violent fluctuations of the last few
daya, was the freedom from nervousness
and sensationalism. In spite of the recur
rence of a marked degree of weakness.
The hope that the liquidation had spent
Its force and that a substantial rally
would result from the requirement of the
uncovered short Interest was shortlived.
New points of Weakness developed almost
from the outset. Instead of the feverteh
and violent breaks which characterised
yesterday's market, however, there was a
gradual and not disorderly recession. 'If
ears refrained from the fierce raiding
teotica which have been employed lor
several days and, on the other hand,
seemed In no anxiety to cover their short
contracts. Rallies were few and Infre
quent, although the decline was maty
times arrested. These pauses In the soil
ing gars Place until late in the day aim
ply to dullness and the market was sin
gularly . lacking In resiliency. One sup
position offered to explain this was that
iquiaauon was going on bv lmnorMnt
Interests without being forced, who were
ble to withhold the selling at weak times
na to orrer actual suDDort aa-alnst raid
ing tactics by the hears. There was a
considerable reduction In the volume of
business and considerable Intervals of
actual dullness In the market.
The news of the dav had ltttl direct
Influence, on the market. The most pro
nounced recovery of the day came after
the report of the granting of a writ of
error to the Standard Oil company In the
case Involving the 129.000,000 fine. A di
rect cennectlon between these two facts
was not clearly evident. The extreme
weakness of some Individual stocks was
factor In keenlnr the rent nt tha mar.
ket unsettled. Canadian Pacific waa an
cute sufferer In this resnect. both hern
and In London. Ths passing of the dlv-

explanation, beyond the investigation cf
the company In progress by the Public
Utilities commission.
The estimates of tha weoU'a -,.Y.
changes showed a decisive turn in tha tide
of the currency movement awav from
New York, the balance of shipments over
receipts being estimated at 11,600.000, be
sides tha transfer through the sub
treasury of 11.000,000 to Chicago and San
Francisco. The week's heavy liquidation
of securities has undoubtedly gone to
paying off obligations, but there haze
been some heavy syndicate payments dur
ing the week. The 116.000.000 titrmnnl
:oday for Union Pacific convertible bonis
would figure but slightly In the wnk'i
average loan account. Stocks got no
neip from the government crop report,
the corn conditions showing- leas than the
expected Improvement, while the decline
In the condition of . spring wheat "was
regarded as sensational.

Ing were very light, but that waa to be
axneeted on FVIrluv Tha DrOOOrtlon Of
corn feds was larger than most days this
week with very few range beeves.
The market on oorn fed cattle was rather
slow. Buyers seemed to feel that they had
been paying very strong prices this week
and that the market was getting too high.
Anntliar reason for their not buying SS
freely as some days was to be found In
ths fact that thers were too many cprn
fait atra and not ennua-h rrassers to kill
out with them. The result was that whlls
sons sales of such cattle ss buyers hsp
Dened to want looked fully steady, the
general market was slow to 10c lower.
The feeling on grass beef was steady,
but there was not enough to cut very
much figure In tha trade.
There were only 10 or 13 loads of cows
and heifers In the yards and they sold
f enerally at steady prices, there being a
air amount of activity to the trade so
that Dractlcallr everything in sight was
sold bv the time tha market usually opens
Blockers and feeders also commanded
good steady prices and the few Sresh loads
here sold to good advantage. As high as
16.30 waa paid, for very good Band Hills
feeders.
