NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Early Market Shows Heavy Declines
on Large Offering.
CLOSE L3 STBOXCr AND HIQHEB

aad General Rally Ensnes
Bonds Are Dall
and Uasy.
NEW YORK. Aug. a-The nervoua tem
per of the speculation, aa a result of yes
terday's violent collapse in prices, was
clearly enough In evidence today and was
promptly reflected In the heavy declines
wnicn occurred in the first Hour, ini re
covery which followed was not accom
panied by any news development ana was
due apparently to the fact that urgent
nquiuaimn naa run us course ior iue uiur.
Stocks left uncovered, an Invariable rule
after so considerable a decline, furnished
sufficient unsatisfactory demand to account
for the rallying tendency. Conjecture con
tinued busy over the sources of the heavy
UmiMAtton and its motives. While the
Identity oB the sellers was undisclosed, the
motives were not beyond denning in tne
money situation and the futility of the
campaign for the liso of the last few
weeks to effect any distribution of stocks.
While there was a cynical disbelief In the
assumption that prominent rich men. sup
posed to hve fostered the rise In stocks,
were being compelled to sacrifice their
holdings In a crumbling market. It was
not questioned that attempts to support
the market were no longer in force In be
half of the abortive campaign. Left with
out artificial supporting measure, the mar
ket waa vulnerable to attack and was In
capable of absorbing any sales to take
profits. The aggressiveness of the bears
sufllcfKl to develop this situation and shake
the market. Such Is the general view of
the events of the week In the Wall street
district.
It does not escape notice that quotations
for the Union Pacific convertible bond cer
tificates which had been pushed up to 92
compared with the subscription of 90. at
which they had been offered to stock
holders, have disappeared from the tape In
the disorderly market of the last ferv days.
The revision of 871.000,000 out of 175.000. 0i0
Of these bonds to tho underwriting syndi
cate was supposed to be the motive for
attempting to revive speculative Interest
In securities. Payment of tl5.000.00i) sub
scriptions to Southern Pacific preferred
stock on Tuesday of next week. The ob
ligations together may account for some
of the pressure to secure recourses by
stock market liquidation. The course of
the Interior exchanges Is another Index of
the source of growing pressure. Deposits
at the subtreasury were made today of
IViO.OOO for telegraphic transfer to Ban
Francisco, and tROO.0)0 to Chlcaeo.
Published warnings from western riank
ers are finding their way Into Wall street
at the same time, that over trading and
high prices ror labor and material, not to
speak of extravaganae In more general
expenditures, have brought about a con
dition of Inflated credits and given pros
pect of close money markets during the
fall. Small banks in the west have un
ususlly large holdings of commercial paper
running of maturity In the fall and It Is
the repayment of these upon which they
rely to furnlah balances at the respective
centers upon which they may draw to
move the crops. On the outside, discounts
rose In London today, but the increased
firmness In the local money market was
sufficient to depress foreign exchange
again. With the relief afforded by the
liquidation, stocks were able to contend
with tha unfavorable factors In the situa
tion and to maintain the recovery. 'Re
ports from Washington of the Intended
criminal prosecution of heads of offending
corporations kept alive the uneasiness over
that subject. A new low record for British
consols was an Incident of the day. Cop
per went to a lower level both In London
and on the New York Metal exchanges.
New York Central reported a heavy de
ficit below the dividend requirement for
the half year ending with June and the
Increased dividend requirement for the
quarter ending with the same date was
nut little more than met by the Increase
for that period In tha earnings available
for tho dividend. The market was so far
oversold, however, that these obstacles
were overcome on the recovery and the
market closed strong and at net advances
on the day.
Bonds were dull and easy. Total sales.

CiTTi.p ncinta this mornlnc were
very light, there not being enough cattle
all told to make a showing In the yards
and not enough of any one kind to make
a thorough teat of the market.
The few fat cattle there were sold about
the same as yesterday. Salesmen seemed
to feel that with such a light run they
ought to receive a little higher prices and
were generally pricing tneir sxock inii
way, but buyers were rather backward
about putting on anything, so that the
general market was slow at about steady
prices. There were no strictly choice cattle
such as have been bringing tf.OO and better,
hut there were some good enough to bring
6.90.
Cows ana neners generally commanueu
tenrlv to etrnne- nrlces. there being a good
demand for the few loads In sight.
The demand for Blockers ana xeeaers was
a 1 an rrtA onrl the market on that kind of
cattle was strong, everything offered meet
ing with oulte ready sale at very satis
factory prices.

Ismhe sxld up to 87 l ami there were fed
yrsrllng-s good enough to bring IS 2ft.
There was a very good demand for
strictly desirable fat sheep and as high
s . so was paid for a string of good old
wethers. This price was the highest paid
for wethers In some little time and the
market could be quoted at least 10c higher
on that kind
There were not enough feeders to cut
any figure in the trad, but there was a
good demand as has been the rase all the
week and without dotiht anything desir
able would have met with ready sale at
fully stesdy prlres.
