Tha wheat market today wa completely
tn tha hands of the teara, who pounded
Jrtces vigorously. Commlsalon hou-a alo
poaed of enormous llnea of wheat for
jcour&f.J longs. The conditions In this
ountry favored the bear side of the mar

favorabla for the new crop, and tha re
ceipts of new wheat In the southwest ehow-ttig-
a constant Increase. Tt;e swera hr-nk
tn prices In Wall street also had a 1e
presatng effect on tha wheat market. Tha
market lacked aubstantlal support, the
principal demand coming from t.arts. The
cloee waa weak and at the lowest point
of the day. September opened a shade tr

Tha weakneaa of wheat and increased
country offerings caueed bearish senti

In oata partially offset these Influences and
prleea rallied somewhat from the low point
of the day. The close, however, was easy.
September opened unchanged to Ho higher

at Local receipts were 1 cara, wua

The oata market waa extremely erratic.
The market waa weak early in the day
because of heavy liquidating sales, hut later
prices rallied aharply on buying by bulls.

NEW TORK. A'iff T. The squall which
broke over the stock market today has
l-een brewing for several days and there
are not wanting oheet-vers to contend that
the seeds of the trouble were sown tn th
Ill-advised market movement to advance
prices which waa embarked upon flam
boyant auaptcee later In June. The mar
ket commitments now holding over from
that period, besides the embarrassments
of the money and capital agitation, which
wer then perfectly well foreseen, have
been overtaken by the bad effect on sen
timent of the renewed outbreak of hos
tility aralnet the corporations.
The stock market was disposed to view
with mlid disquiet the news of the enor
mous fineg levied on the Standard Oil com
pany by Judge Landls last Saturday.
Every day eince then, however, the daily
news has consumed largw span with the
snr.ouncement of new measures or plans
In pursuit of the railroads or other corpora
tlnna. The Iteration has gone on the
nerves of Wall street and the disposition
to sell hns Increased and the decline In
prtre has gained cumulative velocity, as
Is the way with falling bod'es. the out
come being the spasm of liquidation today.
No One ouestions that there us. larr. anil
Important liquidation rn progress although i
the part played by the tears tn forcing I
prices lower and In precipitating the lloul- 1
datlon was alo obvious. The bear ele- I
ment had grown cautious after the con- L
sldrable decline that has occurred this ,
week and especially after the email dis-
turbance In the earlr London market to- '
day. American securities were pronounced
a bright spot In the London market and
there waa some buying for foreign account
here. The result waa a show of strength
In the early part cf the day and some
demand from the shorts to cover. This
appeared later to have been a device on
the part of the more Influential bear lend
ers to shake off a weak following. There j
"-it eiRiifl enouico as ine morning ad
vanced that trnportant liquidation was still
In progress. The onslaught of the bears
thereupon was fierce and the slump In j
prices somewhat alarming. The market i
proved to be honeycombed with stop-loss I
orders, refuting the common suppoaltlon J
of tta sold-out condition. Gossip of sev- .
eral daya past waa revived tn full force i
of the scaling down or closing out of i
speculative accounts following a recent re
turn to Enrope. The stocks moat acutely t
affected by the weakness were those tden- '
titled in popular eettmatton with the stock j
market activities of the interests pointed I
to In this gossin. notablv I'nloa Parle... ;
and Reading. The copper' group also waa
violently depressed.
The subject most talked of was the prob
able farther course to be taken by the
agitation against corporations and the
moasurea likely next to be promulgated
against them. Stocks of companies sup-
pcieea ia ne vuineraoie to suen proceed-
ings aa issued tn the tS.OuO.OOD fine against :
the Standard Oil company were conspic- t
ucusly weak. The Industrials as a group '
wre gTeater sufferers than the railroads. I
The copper group. Sugar, and some of the i
railway equpment stocks. Including Gen
eral Electric, sold at low prtces for the
year. In the railroad list th's was true
only. In the case of the southern group, I
although other prominent stocks ap- I
proached the level of the March panic. I
Reporta of a conference of atate attorneys I
of the Mississippi valley to act in concert I
In further measures against corporations, !
the Alabama Indictment against the South- i
ern nanway company and reports of con- i
ferences amongst corporation advisers to !
aevis protective measures fed the ap
prehension on the subject. The late rise
In call money to 8 per cent reflected the
increasing pressure on resources there and
time loana were strong and the demand
active. Discounts were also higher both

CATTLE Receipts this morning were
again disappointingly small. It seems pass
ing strange that there should ba only about
1 ka head on the ilouth Omaha market.
1 with Chicago reporting 30.000 and Kansas
City 10.00"). Just why the run at this point
should be ao small It Is hard to explain
In view of the fact that very fair prices
have prevailed for soma time back. Last
week the market waa possibly a little low
and that may have turned aoma cattle
away from here, but that would hardly
seem sufficient cause for such a great dis
parity between this and other market
points.
The few beef cattle In light sold very
rapidly at prices decidedly higher. The
market was tn fact, so much higher than
last week that It was hard work to And a
man wilting to say Just how much tha
advance had been, the common expression
being, "It Is higher than a house." Good
corn fed cattle sold up to 37.30, the highest
paid so far sine 1903. There were no good
range steers to make a top oa tha market
for that kind.
Cows and heifers were also In active
demand at prices at least 10c higher than
yeaterday. Everything In sight waa picked
up at an early hour In the morning, but
the number of aalra was very small.
! Wyoming
heifers sold as high as 34.50,
without having had a mouthful of corn.
What few atockers and feeders wars on
sale changed hands early In the morning
at good strong prices. As high as 35.30
was paid by a feeder buyer for heavy and
fleshy westerns.
