Dr. D. Macrae, Sr., who a few day
ago was removed to the Jennie Edmund
eon hospital, was said last night to ho In
a most critical condition.

John Williams, claiming to be from
Woodbine, la.. Is being held by the police
for Investigation. He waa found with a
big bar of lead and so far has been
unable to account aatisfactorily for his
possession of the metal.
Patrolman W. H. Richardson, one of
th victims of the desperado's bullets, was
reported Inst night to be In not as fav
orable condition as on Sunday. He was
said to be feverish and as he has about
reached the critical stage, alarm tor his
recovery 1 now felt.
Ray, the one-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. M. F. Scott, 1834 Seventh avenue,
died yesterday morning. Funeral services
will be held at the family residence this
afternoon at 3 o'clock and the body will
be taken Wednesday morning to Fre
mont, Neb., for burial.
Wllllaor Rufus Jackson, the negro sent
to the county Jail for failure to furnish
a peace bond and who has given Jailer
Gallup so much trouble, wag removed
yesterday to St. Bernard's hospital on
orders from the commissioners on In
sanity. Sheriff Canning Is of the belief
that the fellow Is mentally deranged.

A large number of the leading bualnesa
men of the city gathered nt the Grand
hotel yesterday morning to discus the
water works franchise situation and to
organise for the special election. The
meeting was a pro-franchise one and com
mittee were appointed whose duties will
be to do everything in their power to carry
the proposition.
President E. H. Mcrrlam of the Com
mercial club acted a chairman and among
the speakers were Congressman W. I.
Smith, Ernest E. Hart, president of the
First National bank'; former Pta Senator
William Groneweg and other men promi
nent In business and professional circles.
The meeting was i most enthusiastic one
and each one present volunteered his serv
ices at the polls today! to prevent. If pos
sible, the defeat of the proposed new fran
chise. In explaining the purpose of the meeting
Mr. Merrlam said: 'The time has come
when the business men of this city an 1
those who represent business Interests
must assert themselves. The time has come
when we must not permit politicians who
have no material Interests to protect, to
mislead the people by false statements
and by malicious attack on reputable
business men."
Mr. Groneweg stated that he had exam
ined the proposed ordinance thoroughly
and that he could sea nothing objection
evidently were well safeguarded and he.
for one, proposed to vote for it.
Hart State III Position.
Ernest K. Hart was pronounced in hi ap
proval of the proposed franchise. With tha
grunting of the franchise, the company,
he explained, would be in a position
to furnish the Improved service demanded,
but without the charter It could do noth
ing. So long a there was no provision
for adequate fire protection, Mr. Hart said,
he, like other Investors, would not think of
putting 31 into new manufacturing plants
or buildings. In this connection he stated
that he had recently been In conference
with certain parties who desired to locate
a big factory here, but would not as long

business men, had contemplated building

well known to the police. Is under arrest
charged with "swindling by false pre
tenses." Neeley, It is alleged, induced a
resident of the rural districts, whoa Iden

ticket to Chicago several day ago. Neeley,

At the meeting of the city council last
night the city marshal and city engineer
were Instructed to co-operate with Pest-
master itazieion in enforcing the ordinance
requiring the placing of street numter
on' all houses. This action resumed fr m
a communication to the city c u-cll from
Tostmaster Haxleton, calling attention to
the fact that the work of the mall carriers
wan grealy hampered by the fa lure of
people to place the street numlwr on thl
houses. Mr. Haxleton asked the co-operation
of the municipal authorises in en
forcing the ordinance governing this mat
ter. Councilman Wallace announced that tho
public dedication of the handsome drink
ing fountain presented by the National
Humane alliance to the city would be held
Wednesday evening and a motion prevailed
tliat-the exercises be attended by nil the
members of the city council and a 1 othe:
municipal officers. Mr. Wallace stated thai
one of the conditions on which the foun
tain was presented to the city wa that a
public dedication bo held. The program for
the dedication was not announced.
Mayor Macrae culled attention to the fact
that the annual meeting of the Iowa I eatu

The trial of II. B. Dickinson and Dr. E.
E. Gadd for the murder of Miss Iren
Hlydenburg of Eldora la to be held at the
September term of the Polk county district
k-ourt. They were indicted In October. 1908.
and at the lime the case attracted much

the docket, many of them prominent, among
them the cases against D. C. Blodgett, the
