CHICAGO Gn A I It AND PROVISIONS
Feat a res of the Trading and Closing;
' Price ea Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. Aug. 8. Wheat prices on the
local exchange declined more than lo from
the high price today because of Increasing
local receipts and favorable weather in
the nnrtbAt. At the cli.ee the September
dallvnrf showed a net loss of Tc. Corn
was -a shade, lower. Oaia weie uuwn U.
Provisions ; were unchanged to a shade
lower.
The wheat market was weak all day,
wilh the exception of a slight upward spurt
r-f n after the opening, due to the firm
lyurkct at Liverpool, where prices showed
Oily . small loss, despite the sharp de
cline here yesterday. Pit traders Were
generally bearish because of the favorabfa
weather conditions and sold freely through
out the entire day. Receipts of new wluat
are constsntlly increasing and this fact in
spired considerable selling. Late In the
day shorts became actlvo buyers and caused
a steady tone at the close. September
opened a shade higher to nc lower at
7ilc, advanced to Uo and then de
clined to 89c. The close was at BOiUSOV.
Clearances of wheat and flour were equal
to 116,800 bu. The world's visible supply,
s shown by Br adst reefs, deoreased 1.6WJ,
000 bu. Primary receipts were 1,153.000 bu.,
against 986.000 bu. on the same day last
year. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago
reported receipts of 750 cars, against 658
cars last week and 883 cars one year ago.
Heavy sales by commission houses and
cash interests, baaed upon excellent weather
for the new crop and encouraging reports
from the country, caused weakness in
the corn market. Later In ths day a Arm
tone developed on firm cables and a good
demand for shipping, and buying by bulls.
The market closed steady. September
opened a shade higher to H'S'Vlo lower sit
fcvnic, sold at BMke and then declined to
MV. Final quotation were at 6Mto. Lo
ral receipts were All cars, with 60 of con
tract grade.
Oats were weak because of heary realis
ing sales. Reports from the northwest
were less bullish today, some of th ad
vances claiming an average yield In many
localities. The fear that the new crop will
soon be on the market also Induced many
longs to dispose ot their holdings. The
market closed weak. September opened 3
Uc lower at 4SH4.T sold up to 44Hs and
then declined to 42Ha. The clone was at
43o. Local receipts wars 184 cars.
Provision were weak early in th day
because of a MTlOc decline in the price .f
live hogo. All of the losses Were re
gained on buying by local packer. At the
lo September pork was unchanged at
tlMrSfc. Lard was a shade lower at tv.l&

NTDW TORK, Aug. 6 -The dealings In
stocks by noon todav had passed the fUuie
of ths aggregate sales for the whole of
ye-terday. A weak and unsettled market
and an active selling movement furnished
the explsnatlon of the increase In anima
tion of dealings. Tnere wre various fea
tures In the day's news which were given
responsibility for the discouraged sp-cula-tlve
sentiment.
More direct Interest waa shown In the
Immediate vicinity of the Stock exchange
in the Identity of the large sellers of stocks
as promising to rive a clue to the mntv
and to the standing and Influence cf the
sellers. No dnflnlte success was achieved
In the endeavor to solve this mysterv,
which the active parties In the operations
that attracted curoslty would, of course,
use every device to concesl. That theie
was not Important buying was a self-evident
fart, but this was no more than hal
been manifest for some time rat. The ag
gressive or urgent selling which dov-lop-d
late in yesterday's- market and continual
over today was a new feature of the mar
ket and gave occasion to anxiety on the
part of holders of stocks on margin. Newly
returned tourists from abroad where Im
portant financial missions as well as holi
day enjoyment were supposed to be an ob
ject, were subjected to gossip and conjec
ture regarding the selling. A number of
last week's lata arrivals of this element
are men In the front rank of camtaltsts,
and are supposed to be also active In stock
merket operations. It was remnrk-d that
there was lacking public expression of the
favorable views of ihese Individuals to the
attitude of foreign Investors and capital
towards American securities, such as have
characterised the home-coming utterances
on like occasions In the past. Conferences
were alleged to have occurred with bankers
and other Interests at wh'ch the foreign
situation was canvassed and which had
been followed by the selling movement In
the stock market.
Of the conditions at home most stre
wa laid on the agitation against corpora
tions, which is finding so large a place
In the dally news at this time. The Stan
dard Oil fine Is regarded as a forerunner
of other suits against various corporations,
which will be prompted or encouratted by
the example of that cause. Possible prose
cution against the railroad officials con
cerned In that case was discussed. The
series of measures directed against rail
roads In a group of southern states no
tably, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina
and Arkansas fed the anprehenslon fe't
by market operators on the subject. The
fact that Standard Oil stock Itpelf con
tinued to be little affected did not heal he
anxiety on the subject. The stocks usually
regarded as favorle mediums of specula
tive operations by Standard Oil capitalists
were quite conspicuously the weakest in
the market. A further decline In the price
of copper In London and at the New York
Metal exchange was a factor In this re
sult. Bo was the engagement of $500 f01 in
gold for shipment to Holland, although It
was Intimated that this particular move,
ment waa not likely to be extended. The
continent of Europe was an active bidder
for gold in the London market also and
took !?,sno,0O0 of the sum available, against
the 8500.000 secured for the Bank of Bn.
land. Private discounts rose In Indnn.
Th weekly bulletin of the weather bureau
was not regarded as entirely satisfactory
to crop conditions In parts of the wheat
belt and In the cotton belt. Rates for time
money continued to advance and little waa
offered except for foreign and out-of-town
bankers. The shorts took their profits
before the day was over and worked a
substantial rally, but It was all lost aga'n
and the stock market closed weak.

CATTLE Receipts of catue were disap
pointingly small this morning, there being
only nlnety-tive fresh cars In sight. A
considerable proportion of the cattle on
sale consisted of westerns, pretty well di
vided between boef and feeders.
There weie more corn fed steers on sale
than for some lime back, there being fifteen
to twenty cars all told. There was also a
moderate showing of range beef. The de
mand was very fair and local packers had
their representatives out early In the
morning. While the market did not open
particularly active there was enough life
to the trade to effect a reasonably early
clearance. The prices were anywhere from
strong to ' 10c higher. Among the corn
feds was one bunch good enough to bring
87.26, the highest price paid tor cattle on
the market since 1902.
There were about a dosen cars of oows
and heifers Included In the day's receipts.
The demand for this kind of cattle was
also fair and the markat was safely strong
to 10c higher than yesterday. The market
so far this week has been in a good,
healthy and entirely satisfactory condition
so far as she stock is concerned.
The supply of stockers and feeders waa
small and as tha larger reoelpts of yester
day were prety we.ll cleaned up by country
buyers, there was a good demand for
everything In . sight. Tha result was a
reasonably active trade at good strong
prices.

HOUS Hogg received a set-back today
the general market being Inc. lower than
yesterday. As a matter of course, If 00m
parisons were to be made with soma of
tlie highest sales yeater.lay murnlng, the
decline would be more than that. On the
other hand a comparison with yesterday's
close would not show ho much loss. The
h'.ei" sold largely st 85 756 6 90, with a top
at 16.10. as against IG.aT.tfrt.nO, for the hulk
yosterday. Wnlle tha market was not Very
active at any time, the most of ths 118
cars reported were disposed of In fair
lesson in the morning.
Today's decline carries ths market to
a poti.t that is practically a shilling tower
than at ths close of last week.

In. The market as a whole waa In a sat
isfactory Condition. Among the offerings
there were most too many heavy wethers,
making It too much of one kind. This
fact, together with th late arrival of trains,
mad the trade a little slow, especially on
the opening. Still all kinds of killers were
In fair demand and generally steady with
yesterday.
Th feeder trade was the most active
that It has been so far this season, at
prices decidedly stronger and higher. Com
mission men all seemed to have orders
and In addition to that the barn wa full
of country buyers. Everything offered
was snapped up us soon ss buyers could
get a chance at it, and the prices very
satisfactory to seller. It Is very evldeut
that the country wants a good many feeder
sheep and lambs and there is no danger of
too many coming.
