Even at tha advance It has been Impossible for com- isslon men to Mil all tlie orders r.eeiv4 trom country customers. At the close of the week the yards are practically bare of siocxers ana feeders or all kinds. HOOS Hogs were unevenly higher this morning. Some of the rough and heavy packers did not show very much lmprovu ment, while on the other band some of the flood light and butcher hoga looked 6c ilgher, making the average market aulte a little better than yesterday. The bulk of the hogs sold at $5.90-3 S.Ou; with a top at Irt. 25. lhe trade was fairly active at the advance, practically everything In eight changing hands before 10 o'clock in the morning. The receipts for the week show very lit tle change aa compared with the previous week or a year ago. The market on the other hand has fluctuated back and forth. The week started out with a good stiff ad vance, and a still higher market on Tues day carried prices to the highest point touched since the early part of June. On Wednesday and Thursday there were sharp reactions, which wiped out all of ths ad vance and more too. The Improvement In prices today leaves the market just about where It was at the close of last week. Represetitstlve salea: No. At. SU. Pr No. A. Sk. Pr. it :il M 6 48 44 !M ... The re reipts for the week show a moderate fsii'ng on oompareu wun isai wees, and a BOtivy falling utt compared with a year ago. The market for the week has been In a very fair condition. Packers have wanted liberal supplies of both sheep and lambs and prevailing prices have been hlgu throughout the week. The very fact that prlcea have been so high made the trade rather slow on some days, buyers appar ently fettling that sheep especially were costing too muc-b money, but still they wanted the stuff and they had to pay the prlcea. Lam bs have been extremely scarce all the seek, still aa high aa $i.6u waa paid for the top. Feeder buyers are beginning to drop In and Inoulries from the country aa to whan feeders can be had are Increasing. So far receipts of that kind kave been very light, but the few arrivals have met with ready sale and prospects would seem to favor the belief that with Increased receipts there will be a good business doing. The layman's confidence In the Infallibility of his physician la somewhat ehaken by the frank admission of a writer In the Lancet, Sir William R. Oowera. that he Is unable to tell exactly why people faint. "Cardiac ayncope" la the learned name for ordi nary loss of consciousness. That la. It Is known that failure of the actlop of the heart precedes snd attenda the condition commonly called 4 faint. But it is obvious that consciousness Is not the result of the circulation of the blood. The direct cause of unconsciousness, according to Sir William.' must be "a state of the nerve elements of the brain due to the change In the circulation," and on the subject of causes the writer gives tis no more In formation. He does add. however, some Interesting observations on Ihe effects of a fainting seizure. One effect of cardiac failure Is a great diminution of blood pressure within the skull cavity. When It Is sudden. It Is equivalent to a stunning blow on the head. In the more gradual failure of ordinary syncope the loss of consciousness Is rarely so sudden aa to cause a hurtful fall (leading ladies will please take nollre thi sufferer la generally enabled to lie down. True fainting la attended by sense of increasing feebleness, often undue con sciousness of the heart's action, some BOYCE & BLASIHGHAM. c,lw " mKK Renders customers tho bran service) la Omaha. ALCOHOL FOR MOTOR CARS The Vegetable Field la Safer, tleanei anal More Available Tha Oasollae. Alcohol Is reproduced In the cycle of the seasons; It Is absolutely Inexhaustible; II Is made out of sunshine and air, and Its composition does not lessen Ihe value of the soil Or the energy ot tho earth. Oaao llne, on the contrary, represents a part ot the stored energy of the earth; It exists only to the extent of about 1 per cent In petroleum, and Its supply will In the future Inevitably fall. Today the aupply ot gasc line la so much less than the demand that It practically cannot be obtained by many who would use It. If all the gasoline en gines In America worked continuously fo a day of ten hours they would consume some 4,000,000 gallons of gasollnel Then. Industrial alcohol Is practically constant In composition; gasoline, on the contrary. Is a mixture, and la generally badly adul terated. Again, alcohol la beyond all ques tion safer and more cleanly to use. Its safety lief In ths fart that It la not so readily Inflammable, and that It dissolves In water; In the event of fire tta dilution with water, even to Its per cent In whisky, will at once extinguish It. Gasoline, on the other hand. Is extraordinarily Inflam mable, and, what Is much worse. It floats on water; In a gasoline fire the more the water Is used the mora tho Are spreads. This fact for alcohol la of extreme Impor tance In the question of Insurance and In Its use for motor boats. Still again, with alcohol the smell of the exhaust Is almost Imperceptible; at any rate, gasoline. In this respect, could not endure comparison. Another advantage for alcohol lies In the fact that cylinders and valvea do not become plugged with residual products, aa with gasoline, and that Ita combustion la cleaner and Its Ignition more perfect. Per haps the greatest advantage possessed by alcohol In a struggle with gasoline rests In the higher compressibility of Its rapor; the compression of alcohol vapor may aafely be carried to too pounds per square Inch, while that of gasoline cannot enduro more than eighty pounds without the dan ger of premature exploalon. Next, It re quires no more skill to operate an alcohol engine than a gasoline engine. Finally, It may be expected that alcohol can alwaya be made In the locality of the demand; It will not require, like gasoline, transporta tion through extensive distances. With proper manipulation, any engine working with gasoline or kerosene can op erate, unaltered, with alcohol. It can be operated with alcohol only at about twice the cost of gasoline. This Is shown in a recent teat of fuel economy, in which three automobiles, running on alcohol, a mixture of kerosene and gaso line, and gasoline, respectively, traveled from Trenton, N. J., to Atlantic City, 1061 miles. While the alcohol engine ran per fectly at a rate of thirty-five miles an hour. It consumed fourteen and one-half gallons of alcohol at 37 cents a gallon, con atltutlng a total cost of 6.3fft4 as against the performance of Ita rival, which con sumed seven and one-half galldne of gaso line, at 33 cents, with a total cost of $1.. The relation of the two Is best shown as the cost per ton mile, which for alcohol worka out 'to $0.0382, and for gasoline $0.01354. about half as rmich.-Harper'g To Make a Hue Behave.
