"The wheat market opened firm because

weather is said to be causing damage to
the crops In France and Germany. These
reports, however, were offset by the favor

'irxf pit traders sold steadily all day. The
Market became weak In the last half of

remainder of the day. The close was weak
and close to the lowest paint of the day.

There was little trade In corn and the
market was firm, largely In sympathy with

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Falling Off of Order for Steel
Weakens the Market.
BOOKINGS TOR JULY ABE LIGHT

cline In Srmnathjr Tleavy
Selllag by Profesaloaal.
NEW YORK. July 31-The decline In
prices today got Its prlcnlpal Inspirntlon
from the quarterly report of the United
States Steel corporation. The main factor
In discouraging sentiment was the state
ment given by one of the director that
the amount of new business of the corpor
ation for July had contracted 25 to 88 per
cent from the new business of July.
a shrinkage so considerable a to give occa
sion for much thought on the extent to
which the lowlng-up In general business
might go. Thus It happened thet stocks
turned weak on the appearance of the re
port of the record quarterly earning of tho
Steel corporation. The fact that thee
earnings of the steel corporation would
constitute a new record was definitely
known for several days before the report
was published, although the figure ex
ceeded the most sanguine estimate. The
rise In the volume of orders on hand on
June 30 compared with the preceding quar
ter was no greater than wa expected. Put
these fact aprly to past conditions and
failed to appeal to stock market arntiment.
The fact dwelt on wa that the present
condition In the steel trade represents a
consiaeranie reaction with data Incklnir
to define the ultimate limits of the reaction.
From the purely speculative standpoint
the view was adopted that the market
which failed of stimulation from the recent
announced Intention to advance the South
ern Pacific dividend and from the United
States Steel quarterly earnings was not In
hopeful position for a rise. There was In
consequence much professional selling of
stocks. The copper stocks were even
weaker than the Iron and steel stocUs,
partly on account of the continued un-
settlement In the market for the metal,
which acored a further wldo decline In
London today. A contributory cause to the
weakness In the group was the feeling that
the outcome of the Haywood trial might
Involve some added difficulties for those
companies In the Isbor department. An
unfavorable crop report ' from a private
expert wa a factor In the late weakness
of the market.
Sterling exchange moved away from tho
gold export point today. The higher rates
for call loans have Invited offerings of
bankers' finance bills, which lowered the
price of exchange. The pressure to sell
stocks persisted throughout the session and
the market closed weak at the lowest
prices of the day.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value. 81.066,000. United 8tates bonds were

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were only moderate and consisted almost
entirely of rangers, with but a light sprink
ling of corn feels.
I'nder the influence of a good local de
mand, combined with favorable advices
from other selling points, the market on
cornfed cattle was generally stronger to
luc higher. While the supply of cattle of
that kind was small, there were some good
enough to bring $6.50. Oood rango cattle
acre stronger, although the trade was not
especially active on that kind.
Cows and heifers sold anywhere frcm
steady to 10c higher than yesterday and
the trade was sufficiently active to effect
a reasonably early clearance.
Both stockers and feeders were In active
demand this morning, with the market gen
erally a little stronger. As hth as to. 15
was paid for good fleshy western feeders.
Llrht stock cattle were In good demand
and everything desirable along that lino
sold stronger both yesterday and today.
The sharp break of last week has ap
parently Increased the demand.

SHEEP Receipts of sheep this morning
wore very small, only eight cars being re
ported In. There were five more cars of
the same Wyoming wethers that sold at
$5.20 yesterday. They brought $5.15 today,
but were very wet, making the price prac
tically the same for the two days. A few
more Idaho yearlings, the same as brought
$6 90 yesterday, sold up to $'.00 today, with
the feeder end, on which there were a good
many old wethers, at $5.20. as against $615
ycsterdlay. Taking the market as a whole
It could hardly be quoted other than a good
steady market, with a fair demand at cur
rent price.
Shiners will note that prevailing prices at
this point are very good as compared wtth
eastern matkets, due to the fact that the
runs locally have been rather small. A
noted yesterday and sevetal times tfore
there Is too much of sameness of the re
ceipts. 80 far this season very little else
than old wethers have arrived at this point.
Lambs and yearlings have been very
scarce, not enough of the former arriving
to really establish quotations.
