THE OMAHA
XEWYOUR STOCKS AND BONDS
Marked Shrinkage in Speculatire In
tereit the Feature of the Day.
HABRIMANS DROP LEADERSHIP
.Market Has Advantage of Favorable
Return, hat Prices A re Irregular,
with the Close slightly
Higher.
NEW YORK. July 2.-There was a
marked shrinkage of speculative Interest
In the day's stock market, which was dis
tinctly dull. The fault lay very largely
with the Harrlman stocks, which dropped
out of their positions of activity and
strength. Efforts were made fo substitute
cither stocks In the leadership, but without
success The animation of the dealings
In the two stocks is gone and the suppo
sition that the action of the head of tiic
system In taking the public into his con
fidence as to the contemplated dividends
was Intended to this end, puts the market
leadership Into a quandary.
The following of the present movement
for a rise In prices have had faith that
they were following a movement designed
or favored by the Cnlon Paeltlc Insiders.
The supposed motive of the movement was
to afford a favorable market for the 1'nlon
Pacific "onvertlhle bonds, of which $71,000.
0"0 or the t7.i.(KO.000 Issue fell to the under
writing syndicate. The recent surmises
which have found moat favor amongst the
speculative element In Wall street as to
the sponsors for the movement initiated
In the market have dealt with the names
of Harrlman and the Standard Oil group.
Credence In these surmises Is shaken by
the present situation and the present con
JiTture is with the possibility that the
bead of the Harrlman system has sought
to put a stop to the use of his name and
prestige by speculative manipulators. The
abortive campaign of 1903 In Southern Pa
cific, the efforts through the courts to en
force a dividend payment to further It and
the part played by Mr. Harrlman In thwart
ing the attempt are now matters of his
tory and were canvassed with Interest In
the discussion of present conditions torinv.
This situation was given the princtiwl
credit for the drop In the rate of market
activity. Some effect of depression was
exerted by the renewed weakness In the
tries and by a drop of 3V4 points In South
ern Railway preferred. The latter was at
tributed to the dread of the exense In the
struggle over the 214 cent passenger fare
law and the aggressive measures of the
North Carolina authorities In the matter.
The market had the advantage of a favor
able bank return. The usual authorities
are In close agreement In the neighborhood
of $s.:.(O,0iio, as the figure of the accre
tion to cash reserves during the week. As
$4.6!i9.00O of this Is derived from the opera

CATTLERecelpts of rattle Uiis morning
were very light and there were not enouii
of any one kltul on sale to really make
a test of values or establish quotations.
What few beef cattle there were gen
erally ".old In about the same notches as
yesterday. That moans that outside of
rwtrlctly choice or fancy steers, that were
not over lotolnc lower, the market was 35
40c lower than last week. Some sales
men. In fact, are calling It as much as 60c
lower In extreme cases on the short fed
and common rattle.
Cows and heifers also sold about the
same as yesterday, as far' as could be
Judged from the few loads offered. They
have experienced about the same decline
as have steers. In" other words, while the
market on the very best dry-lot cowb and
heifers has not shown much change, the
common to pretty decent grassers are 25
iifioc lower than last week.
There were only three or four cars of
stockers and feeders In first .hands thU
morning. Heavy cattle sold at fairly good
advantage, the same as they have done all
the week, but light cattle, good grad-s
as well as common, are right at 60o lower,
with some of the least desirable showing;
more decline than that as compared with a
week ago.

HOGS-Hogs sold 6c higher this mornina
and practically everything In sight changed
hands before 11 o'clock. The trade was a
little slow at the opening, owing, in part,
to the fuct that salesmen had a very good
opinion of the value of their holdings and
were determined to get everything possible
out of the market When once under way,
however, the movement was fairly active
at thB advance noted, with the results that
an early clrsrsr.ee was effected. The built
of the bogs sold at $6tVrt6.i. with a top at
$ 30. Yesterday the bulk of the hogs went
at $V9(ifi6.(i. with a top at $4.20.
The day s advance carries the market
to the highest point touched since the sec
ond week In June.
