NEW YORK, July 2J. Tim operations
for the advance in a limited uroup ol

The action of the market had little in
the news to explain It, unless It might be
the resumption of an advertising cam
paign on ths long side which has been
distrusted in previous stages and which
offers companionship consloered undesir
able, by friends of higher prices. Specu
lative sentiment may have been affected
to some extent by the tone of warning
amongst banking and financial authorities
of the threatened Inadequacy of money
market resources to any considerable
speculative undertaking In the stock mar
ket. This Influence was not directly ef
fective In the money market, however.
Money on call In fact continued to rule
easy and it la only In the more remote
prospect of convenience to borrowers Is
expected. The hesitancy of the speculation
for higher prices in stocks today were
partly due to skepticism over some of tho
rumors which caused the rise of th latter
part of teat Week. Substantial difficulties
were pointed out in the carrying out of
the supposed readjustment of control of
Burlington by the Northern Puclllo and
the Oreat Northern. An Installment foil
due today of some $14,0M,) on Union
Pacific convertible bonds, which fall en
tirely almost to tho underwriters and with
a considerable Interval to elapse before
another payment, It was believed that an
Immediate motive for stimulating the mar

Was withdrawn. Reports of labor troubles
in the Iron mlnos had a bad effect on
United States Steel. The pressure on stocks
was not severe at any time and quite gen
eral recoveries ensued on the marking up
of Southern Pacific and Atchison In the
last half hour. The closing was heavy.
Bonds were steady. Total sale, par value,

CATTLE Receipts of cuttle were larger
by over 100 cars ihun any previous day
before this month and tliu lurgesl of any
clay since tho Hist week In Juno. A con
siderable proportion ol tho univals con
sisted of rangers, there being more ot that
kind of calllu than any day so far this
Season.
There was a fair demand for good corn
fed steers and strictly dry lot beeves ot
good quality sold at about steady plico.
On the oilier hand, the corn feds showing
gruss were slow sale end the market lofij)
16o lower at least. Some of the best west
ern steers also sold to good advantage, us
high us $o.7u being paid for Wyoming hay
feds. On the oilier hund, the general run
of the westerns were a little lower than
least wee k, probably lof(15o at least and In
many cases more. Cattle which neither
packers nor feeders seemed to tuke to were
very slow sale.
The receipts of cows and heifers were
tho largest that they have been so far this
season, 100 cars being reported on sale.
Some Of the very best cows end heifers
did not show so very much chungv, but
In a good many cases they sold 10U150
lower and when It came to the common to
medium kinds and those showing gruss the
market was lolii'o lower. Some very good
dry western cows sold as high as 14 75.
Feeder speculators seemed to feel that
prices on that kind of cattle have been
too high and with more liberal offerings
tills morning they were very quick to take
the bear side of the deal. While aome of
the beat cattle did not show much change
the general market was lower.

SHEEP Receipts of sheep did not look
so bad on paper this morning, but as a
matter of fact the offerings on the mar
ket were small, (if the csrs reported in
four were direct to puckers, leaving only
six on sale, tif those on sale Iheie were
live cars of Idaho wethers, which met
with ready sale at $.ViO. The other waa a
mixed cur that did not arrive until late.
The trade might be summed up as a good,
steady to sliotig utid active market. It
was evident that puckers wanted supplies
and they cleaned up everything offered as
soon as given a chance at It.
