Riuggisn movement In the general list was
I In sympathy with these. Southern l'acllic
I moved upwards wlth some vigor as an
errect or the heavy surplus of net earn
ings for the fiscal year ended June i
which was reported today. The stocks of
the telegraph companies sold up brisklv
In consequence of the settlement of the
strike at Pan Francisco. Fnlon Pacific
did not fully sympathise with Its sub
sldlary stocks, and the Hill stocks also
were unresponsive.
The cheerful tenor of the weekly re
views of the mercantile agenda was a fa
voring Influence on the market. The bank
statement failed to show all of the ex
pected gain In cash, owing, presumably, to
special movements, especially large ship
ments to pnston early In the week. Hut
the loan Item also was expanded only
nominally and the gain In surplus reserves
was as large, therefore, as was expected.
Fnited States deposits still Included stand
at JZ7.777.9rm. which Is only 8l.460.5ifl less
than last week and does not reflect the,
full repayment tinder the pall of July 10.
The markedly easier tone of both call and
time money with the progress of the week
left nn room for solicitude over the present
condition of the. hanks. Rest prices of
the day were made after the publication
of the bank statement. Discounts In Lon
don were easier today and copper secuil
tlcs there continued to Improve. Profit
taking made the closing tone lireRular and
left a mixture of small net losses In prices.

CATTLK The catJe market was to all
Intents and purposea bare of supplies to
day. In fact for two days In succession
there have betn hardly enough cattle here"
to make any showing; at all. Still, the
total for the week Is not very different
from what Is was last week or a year ugo.
While the supply of beef still consists very
liirm'ly of corn fed steers, It is noticeable
thnt tange heef Is becoming more plentiful.
.There has been noticeable during the
week, a tendency to epread between the
different kinds of beef steers. Thus, the
well finished dry-lot cattle have been grad
ually tending upward and at the close of
the we.k are safely 10c higher than a week
go. On the other hand, beeves showing:
more or less grass, have declined to about
the same rxUnt as, Rood cattle have ad
vanced. This, aa a mutter of course, is
due to the Increase In the number of range
cattle coming forward and the competition
from that source. Taking! the market as
a whole, It has been In a very satisfactory
condition throughout the week, as the
trade on most days has been reasonably
active as a result of a good buying de
mand. Cows and heifers have also shown
strength and desirable kinds are pretty
close to 50c higher than the low time ten
days ago. Grass cows as usual this season
cf the year, have been weak and the feel
ing Is that with more liberal receipts of
rangers, the market on that kind Is liable
to sell off most any day. As has been the
case with beef steers, the trade In cows
and heifers haa been very satisfactory all
the week, the buying demand being active
and tho trade In a good healthy condition
from day to day.
The receipts of stockers and feeders have
been very moderate every day this week,
but It la still early to expect very many
cattle of that description and the demand
as usual, haa not been very heavy. Still
such good feeders as have been coming
hava met with very ready sale all the
week and are generally a little stronger
than a week ago. Common Inferior grades
nave been a little sticky, tne inquiry for
.that kind being rather limited.

Peat ores of the Tradluv and f'loalna;
Prices on Roard of Trade,
CHICAGO, July 20. The marked Improved
report in the crop situation In the north
ern prt of this country caused a weak
market in wheat today, and prices declined
shurplv. At the close September wheat
was l'frle lower. Corn was down Vftc.
Oats were off VijSc- Provisions were 2i
to loo lower.
The wheat market save for a slight firm
ness at the Immediate opening, due to firm
cables, was weak all day. Throughout the
session tired and disgusted longs dumped
lines of wheat on the market. At no tune
during the session was the surport able
to meet the selling pressure. So many re
ports were received from tne northwest
telling of the Improved and improving con
dltl"ti of the crop that many holders wero
fearful of carrying their wheat over Sun
day. From the southwest came reports ol
clear weather, and a prediction of a re
newal of offerings of cash wheat. Thli
added to the weakness and the strike at
the ore shipping ports was also a weaken
ing factor, it being thought In some quar
ters that It portended a tie up In the lake
shipping. The close' found the market
weak. September wheat opentad lower
to "c higher, at 92 to 93c. sold ' be
tween 91V, and 3o and closed at lV&SH.e.
Clearances of wheat and flour wers equal
to 192,ti0 bushels. Primary receipts ware
