sheep of ary consetince today, the mar
ket, as usual on a .Sat unlay, being prac
tically hare r,f fresh suplples. The re-
veins tor the we i.nve simwn a consid
erable gain over tl,.- previous wee. svit
are still considerably short of the record
made a year ago. The arrivals have con
sisted almoxt cntirclv of muse sheep and
luml.s, principally from Idann and Wy
oinlng. During the greater t art of the week sheep
constituted the big bulk of the receipts
Fortunately, there was a very fair demand
for that kind and the trade during the
first half of tiie week was In a good healthy
Condition. On Monday prices were, It any
thing, a little stronger. After that steady
prices were maintained until Friday, wnen
there was a break of K'.iL'c.
l.aml.s during the llrst half of the week
were In very light supply and sold at fully
steady prices from day to day until Friday
when they, too. broke badly, the market
on that day being avnic lower than the
previous wek.
The cause for the sh Am deellone In both
sheep and lambs is to be found In the fact
unit woile prices at this point
maintained, eastern markets declined until
ion marKet was considerably out of line.
After the decline prices here are still very
satisfactory as compared with eastern
markels.

The cheerful tenor of the weekly re
views of the mercantile ngencls was a fa
voring Influence on the market. Thi bank
statement failed to show all of the ex
pected gain In cash, owing, presumably, to
special movements, especially large ship
ments to Boston early In the week. But
the loan Item also was expanded only
nominally and the gain In surplus reserves
was as large, therefore, ns was expected.
United states deposits still included stand

The markedly easier tone of both call and

left no room for solicitude over the present
condition of the. hanks. Rest prices of
the day were made after the publication
of the bank statement, discounts In Lon

CHICAGO, July 20. The marked Improved
report In the crop situation In the north
ern part of this country caused a weak
marki-V in wheat today, and prices declined
sharply. At the close Septemlter wheat
was li-&le lower. Corn was down V&
Oats were off V&c. Provisions were 2',,
to loo lower.
The wheat market save for a slight firm
ness at the Immediate opening, due to firm
cables, was wesk all day. Throughout the
session tired and dUgunied lungs dumped
lines of wheat on the market. At no time
durliig the "teflon was the support able
to meet the selling presure. S i many re
ports were rerrived from tTie northwest
telling of the Improved and Improving con
dition of the crop that many holders wero
fearful of carrying their wheat over Sun
day. From the southwest cams reports ol
clear wratln-r, and a prediction of a re
newal of offerings of cash wheat Thii
Bilded to the weakness and tha strike at
the ore shipping ports was also a weaken
ing factor, it being thought In some qusr
ters thai It portended a tie up In the lake
shipping The close' found the market
weak. September wheal opened c lowur
to c higher, at 9-' to S.lc. sold - be
tween 9m and Me and closed at Smt(911.-.
Clearances of wheat and flour were eiual
to 192,if0 bushels. Primary receipts were
587,000 bushels, against 1,140.000 busluls on
the same day last year. Minneapolis, Du
luth and Chicago reported receipts of 21
cars, against 263 last week and 6)4 cart last
year.
The weakness of the wheat market and
the continued tine weather for the grow
ing crop produced weakness In the corn
mnrket, wlilch lasted throughout the day.
September corn opened a shade to ViSc
lower at 52 to 5c, sold between 62 and
u2c and closed weak at ilic. Local re
ceipts were 21 cars with 22 of contract
grade.
Tho bulls In oats sold out tbelr holdings
throughout the session, but the liquidation
was not as heavy as In wheat, and the
market held better than either wheat or
corn. The general run of the crop news
was favorable to the condition of the crop.
September opened a shade to HfcVk'' lower
at to ax, sold between 87kii)7T and
3a'l0, and closed at 38. Local receipts were
113 cars.
Trading In provisions was dull, but prices
held fulily tlrm considering the weakness
of the grain markets. Packers were fair
buyers of pork, and some lard was taken
for expord. 8eptem!er pork closed 2o
lower at I8.47',4c. Lard was down 7WWluu
at $M.liii1l.l2'A. Ribs were 2Vd&e lower at
$0.67 1X70.
Estimated receipts for Monday are:
