NEW YORK, July 16 The stock market of today waa a uull affair and had all the usual characteristics of the midsummer period. There wss some activity in three or four stocks, but as the shams of those are deducted from the total shares of the tlsy, the remainder is Insignificant. Lnlon Pacific was the active feature, and its sales make up an Important proportion of the day's business. The movement In Union Paclllc also was a dominating In fluence on the narrow -movement of the whole market. Amalgamated Copper and Reading made up another Important pro portion of the small dealings of the day. The aeneral movement waa slugglah and hesitating, In conformity with the narrow ness of the market. The market triends of Union Pad no proclaimed their convic tion that the Inference to be drawn from the tenor of the Harrlman report ef the Iuterstate Commerce commission was the admitted futility ?f a prosecution to dis solve the railroad combination. The de mand for this stock from, domestic sources was heavy and was more than suitlclent to absorb some large offer tins fur foreign account. London took an unfavorable view of New York values and sent over quo tations quite radically reduced from last night's closing level here. The resistance developed to this Inllusnce was due entirely to sympathy with the Union Pacific move ment. An aasumptlon has been coupled wllh the supposed prospect of legal prose cution to dissolve the Harrlman railroad combination that similar suits against the Hill group would follow In course of time. The stocks of that group consequently sympathised closely with the Union Padua fluctuations. An obstacle to the rising tendency, due to the effect of strength In Union Paclllc, was the effect on sentiment produced by the Instability of the price of cepper. The stock market was confronted at the outset today with a slump In the price of copper warrants In London, and during the dav there was a further reduction of half to three-fourths of a oent a pound for sit grades of copper at the local metal ex Changs, bringing prices between 1 and 2 rents below the reduced prtre fixed by the large producers last week. It has been the subject of common discussion that this reduction has failed to revive any de mand for copper and operations found ex pression today that the fall in price must run several more cents before a stable lovel will be found for future business. This Incident aroused some anxletv over the whole business situation, and the possibil ity of similar deadlocks on account of high prices In other lines. The report of the reduction of quotations at tho New York Metal exchange was the signal for a de cided setback In stocks. Other Influences were scanty. The continued easing of the call money market soothed any Immediate apprehension on that score. The foreign exchange money market yielded and lessened the probability of a resumption of gold exports. Opinion on the moner outlook was affected bv the call for a 20 per cent syndicate Installment on the TTnlon Pacific convertible bonds to be paid on Monday next, whloh will call for nearly $14,OTiO,000. A quick return of these funds to the money market Is expected. Tho weekly bulletin of the weather bureau was favorable In Its showing of crop condi tions. Ths June exports of agricultural products was reported nearly unchanged from last year, a decline In cotton exports balancing a-rise In value of breadstuffs. Prices rose rapidly In the last half hour to the best of tho day. 1 Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, $978,000. United States 2s, coupon, advanced three-fourths per cent on call. The market on fat steers was in very satisfactory condition. There waa a good demand and the offerings of desirable killers met with ready sale at staady to strong prices. Among the offerings weru cattle good enough to bring $6.95. While good dry-lot cattle are selling so well shippers are cautioned to look out (or graaiy stock, which naturally conies Into competition with range beef, which Is be ginning to come more freely. There wero not far from twenty-five cars of oows and heifers In the yards this morning and the market was strong and active on the desirable killers. Every thing answering to that description sold very readily at satisfactory prices. In ferior grades were a little slow. flood feeders commanded fully steady prices, but the supply was not vary large. Light stock cattle, especially If not very good, are rather slow sale. ML.-".
