The executive committee of the Com
mercial club, at Its meeting Tuesday noon,
decided to build an Iron bridge, three feet
wide, across the alley from the fifth floor
of the Board of Trade building to the
Sehllts building, Immediately south. The
bridge Is for the purpose of a Are escape
to be used by the occupants of either
building In case of fire In the other.
Ths matter of .getting the national con
vention of tne Eagles In 1909 was brought
up and the committee decided to start a
campaign for bringing this big event, to
the city. NOmRha'e claim sm the convention
city are considered very strong.

The application of a large eastern manu
facturing company which desires to estab
lish a house in Omaha was taken up and
referred to the committee. The company
wants a certain amount of local capital
to be Interested before It establishes a
bouse here.

Robert 8. Oberfelder has been heard from
again This tlms he is In Venice, where he
is literally riding the water wagon. On a
postal card received from him hs com
ments kindly on ths streets of Omaha, and
suggests that If they were like the streets
of Venice no complaint would be heard of
the pavement. He probably hasn't Inves
tigated, but no doubt exists of his familiar
ity with tha favorite hymn of the late
Mayor Moores "There's a Hole In the Bot
tom of the Sea." Mr. Oberfelder will very
likely take It for granted that the Adriatic
Is properly equipped with holes and not
make personal Investigation. He is accom
panied on his ramble through Europe by

Paving contractors are start rg worK In
earnest as far as they are able to secure
men and material, hut rsln have been
somewhat against rapid work during the
present week. Concrete work Is now In
i progress on a ruinber of contracts. On
Ik street between Twenty-fourth and
Thirtieth streots grading has been shout
finished and concrete Is being laid. Thera
Is more than ordinary delay on the street
tecs use of the condition of the sidewalks.
Under the first order for the grading of
the street It was provided the roadway
should be thlrty-s'x feet wide. Under tha
present regulations paving must be forty
fet wide on streets having double street
cur tracks and for this reason It becama
necessary to move sidewalks further from
th center. When this was jtarted It was
found the street had been graded outside
of the sidewalks and the city will be com
pelled to make such changes before new
curbs can be placed.
Ilnln Cats Ont New Work.
The contractor who has the paving of
Charles street, west of Twenty-fourth
street, thought he was through with tha
curbing, but Ihe recent heavy rain caused
him to change his mind. Under the speci
fications the concrete must be Ave inches
thick. Some had been changed for In
sufficient thickness previously and when ths
rnlns descended It uncovered several hun
dred feet of concrete which was not up
to specification.
Concrete work Is also in progress on
Thirty-fifth street, between Poppleton and
Woolworth avenues and on Pacific street,
between Thirty-second and Thirty-third
streets.
The city engineer Is Insisting upon an
early etfcrt for work on Jackson street
and on Forty-first avenue, from Hamilton
to Seward.
The street car company Is relsylng tha
curb on Fortieth street, between Deven
port and Dodge streets, while the repavlng
of Farnam street, from Thirteenth t
Eighteenth street, Is progressing satisfac

More progress than ever will be made
this year on the great map of ths country
which shows all the surface forms of tha
land, every hamlet ajid every house ex
cepting where they stand closely together
In towns and cities. New sheets will be
made this season In thirty-one states and
four territories. The summer field work
la all outlined excepting In this state and
Pennsylvania. Survey parties are In ths '
field and the work Is being vigorously
pushed.
No country has ever made such rapid
progress with Its topographic surveys, area
for area, as the 1'nlted States. Only a
little more than a third of our territory la
yet surveyed for the purposes of tha big
map, but this Is merely because our land
surface. Including Alaska, la nearly aa
large as the whole of Europe. To make aa
good a map of our domains as that whloh
we can now buy of nearly the whole of '
Europe we shall have to do nearly as much
surveying as al the European powers have
done together. Only four of our states
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut
and New Jersey have so far been com
pletely mapped, but the maps ot several
other states will soon be finished.
The maps of those states In which tha
national survey Is being carried on with
the largest amount ot state co-operation
will make the most rapid progress. Thug
In Ohio, which contributes very liberally
In trained men and money to the topo
graphic work In the state, tt Is expected
that thirteen more map sheets will be com
pleted or far advsnced by ths end oX tha
present season.
The Fairbanks region along the mlddla
Xanana river, Alaska, where many hun
dreds of miners are working In tha placer
fields, Is being surveyed In detail and a
map of It on a scale of a mile to an inch
will be published next wlntar. The survey
for a map on the ssme large scale ot tha
Kanaan Peninsula, on Prince of Wales
Island, In southeast Alaska, Is also being
made. A large region spreading east and
west between the Yukon and Tanana rivers,
from the International boundary near
Dawson to Fairbanks, will ulso be surveyed
for a map on half that scale. Less thaa
half of Alaska Is as yet oovered even by
preliminary peonnnolssance surveys, and It
Is gratifying that such considerable addi
tions are to be made this year to the de
tailed surveys for maps on a scale larga
enough to give us a clear geographical
picture1 of these areas.
Ths United States Geological Survey for
several years past has annually averaged
about 38,000 mile of completed topographto
surveying. The Bulletin of tha American
Geographical society recently said that thla
Is equal to the annual mapping of a stats
nearly tha alxe of Indiana and greater than
Maine or South Carolina. It Is an are
nearly equal to that of Portugal and aa
great as that or Switzerland and Denmark '
combined, yet It Is scarcely one one-hundredth
of the total area of ths United
States Inclusive of Alaska. The average
appropriation for these topographic; survey
Is about $360,000, and the cost for several
years has averaged about $10 a square
mile, excepting in states where mora de
tailed work Is done.
When a state contribute to ths carrying
out of the survey Its contribution Is de
voted to giving the state larger scale map
on which more detailed work Is done. Thus
the maps of those states which show thsir
Interest by helping to defrsy the coat of
the survey contain more Information tha.

derland for driving automobiles too speeds
Hy were dismissed by Police Judge Craw
ford Tuesday morning. Howard Baldriga,
who acted as attorney In both oases,
proved that technically neither of the de
fendants was guilty. W. R. McKeen. Jr.,
was fined $10 and costs for the same offensa
and W. R. Preston. $28 -and costs. Mr.
Preston pleaded guilty and mads no do
fense. Both Mr. Preston and Mr. McKnon
paid their fines.
