MARKET IS GENERALLY DULL Arlltllr and trenath ronBned t'omparatlyelt- Few Issue Close Is Strong and Higher. to NEW YORK. July 13.-The rectification ot last week's dlscrepsncy in the cash Item of the bank statement conduced to the favorable showing of the clearing house In stitutions today nnd explained the small effect of the week s withdrawal of gov ernment deposits from the banks on top of a seeming exhaustion of surplus re served. The cash gain reported today hy the bank of f4.00o.oiio compares with an apparent loss on the known Imports of money of upwards of $6,000,mt. I,ast week's statement, contrariwise, reported a loss of 15.000,000 each, where a gain of $7,0r.0"0 had occurred according to known movements of money. The explanation probably Is that corporations transferred deposits from banks to trust cempanies on a very lnrge Scale to effect the July statements, after which these cash holdings have been trans ferred back to the banks. The heavy loan contraction of $10.W8.4eO is credited partly to stock liquidation, hut change In secur ity holdings in connection with the release effected by the surrender of government deposits may figure also In this item. An expectation of some such anomaly In the bank statement was a factor In keeping up prices In the dull market. The activity nd strength wss conflned to comparatively few stocks. Vnlon Pacific was the leader of the market. The pending publication of the findings of the Interstate Commerce commission on the Harrlman Inquiry was an Influence on this stock. The belief was entertained that the contents of the re port which might he urtverse to the ltnr rlman properties have been so explicitly recognized that their effect has been felt alreadv in the stock market. The Hill stoeks"were affected by. the week of a ma turing plan for the transfer of Northern Pacific's equitv In the Burlington to Ihe Oreat Northern. The closing was strong, with the gains held. CATTLE Only two cars of cattle were reported In the yards thla morning, so that the market was absolutely bare of supplies. For the week the receipts have shown a large gain over the previous week, but have been nevertheless considerably short of the record made the corresponding week a year ago. The demand has been very good all the week for beef steers and strictly dry lot cattle; such as have been selling from $6.00 up have been strong every day. On the other hand the medium to pretty decent kinds of cattle, such ps have bnen selling from $6 00 down, have been gradually eas ing off and at the close of the week are anywhere from 1,Vti25o lower. This means that anything showing grass has been eas ing off. The settlement nf the question In dispute between packers and commission men has put the cow market back on a normal basis once more. Fortunl(ly the country used good judgment In shipping, so that there was no glut, with the natural result that prices firmed up under the influence of the Increased buying demand In other words, the market has been in a good healthy con dition. As usual during July the receipts of Stockers snd feeders have been very light, there hardly being enough cattle on some days to make a real good test of the market. while the demand has not been very urgent, 1t hss been fully equal to the supply snd prices In consequence have been firm from day to dny. The market. If anything. Is a little stronger at the close of the week. Representative sales: COWB. Ito. At. Pt. No. 1 1390 1 76 6 .... BULLS. 1 n t is 2 I ) 2 K1 1 1 12 2 25 At. Pr. fs; I 60 1411 .1740 I 61) 4 60 HOGS Packers evidently hsd their minds made up this morning to buy the hog loner. Hence, they started out hldding prices that were at least 60 lower than yesterday and the trade at the beginnlnr was very slow and dull. A little later buyers gradually raised their hands until the market was steady or very nearly steady with yesterday. On that hasla the selling became very active and prac tically all the hogs sold before 10 o'clock In the morning. Taking the market as a whole, it was possibly a trifle easier thsn yesterday, but the difference was not very great. The bulk of the hogs sold at $6,704(5.76. the same as yesterday, with a top at $5 7'. The receipts of hogs this week hsve been very liberal, showing a large gain over the previous week and a still heavier gain over ihe corresponding week a year ago. The market has lluctiiated back and forth, prices on Wednesday touching the low fiolnt of the year. Since Wednesday value live recovered slightly, so that at the close of the week the market Is only 2tY?fi 5c lower than it was at the close of last week. ho. 6.. 6ft . . 63.. 0 . 61 . 1.. .. 61.. 1..
