YORK, July 8 Some of the fae
the financial situation apparently
appealed to speculaflve sentiment today
as containing hazardous elements, which
served as an admonition to reduction of
commitments In stocks. This did not dis
suade a considerable party In the" specu
lation from persisting In the operation for
a rise that they have been carrying on for
nme time past. Between a few stocks that
were positively strong and a few others
that were actively weak, the market
was almost passive and pulled this way
and that In sympathy with the movement
In the active stocks that hsppened to bfc
dominant at the time. Amalgamated Cop
per and St. Paul were the most con
spicuous points of strength and were sup
posed to reflect the continuance of the
advertised campaign for advancing stocks.
The advance In Amalgamated Copper was
accompanied by reports thst an agreement
had been reached, practically, for sales
of copper by the large producers for early
delivery at corporations from the prices
now n noted and which have Induced a
deadlock between buyers snd sellers. The
movement In St. Paul was ascribed to
purpose to further the demand for the new
stocks of that company, subscription war
rants for which sre now onoted In the
market. The recent active rlso In Union
arlflc has been Imputed In the same way
a desire to help the demnnn for me
ew convertible bonds, tne nrst au per
cent Installments of subscriptions for
which Is payable on Wednesday of this
week. The fart that Union. Pacific, wes re-
etlonary today removed one Important
stay from the movement of higher prices.
Official utterances were quoted to indi
cate a purpose of cash accumulation In
the 1'nlted States Steel treasury, which
sepmed to controvert the recent claims
mado by stock operators that an Increase
the dividend ratn nail neen aeterminea
on. Thst stock was consequently heavy.
The money market position lay at the bot-
om of the hesitation and Irregularity of
the market as much as any other matter.
The engaitement of $1,760,000 gold for ex
port to France today confirmed the ex
pectation at the end or last weeK. 1 nts
withdrawal of cash from the banks follows
the showing In the Saturday hank state
ment of a surplus above the legal reserve
requirement of only $SM.!60. The natural
Inference was that the New York hanking
surplus would be wiped out. Nevertheless,
rates for call loans here receded from the
level at the close of last week. This em-
haslsed the disposition to distrust the
bank statement entirely as a reliable Index
of the actual banking situation. That tne
situation admits of coming restriction of
banking resources Is. however, generally
agreed. Today's engagement of gold had
no effect In lowering prices In the foreign
exchange market and It is considered
probable, therefore, that the movement
may extend to some length. Discounts
were firmer In London and Berlin, the
former center being affected by repayment
of large obligations to the Bank of Eng-
and Incurred for rounding the half-year
period. The presentation of government
per cents for redemption continues very
scanty, and Wednesday Is the date fixed
by the secretary of the treasury for the
return of ITO.OiW.OOO of government deposits
by th banks. This concurrence of cir
cumstances leaves little room to doubt thnt
hardening of money rates In New York
la Imminent.
A decline In New York exchang at Chi
cago to 10 cents discount was an incident
of the day which showed a shifting ten
dency In the currency movement. Large
amount of attention given to the discus
sion of relations between the United States
and Japan was taken note of, although
It was not an active Influence. The market
was dominated by a heavy tone at the

8HF.HP-There was a very fair rttn of
sheep this morning, the receipts being
larger than any day so fur since the rlose
cf the. aeason for fed sheep and Injtlhs
The arrival this morning barring a load
or two, consisted entirely of grass range
stuff from Oregon and Idaho.
The market, as a whcle. was In a very
fair condition, there being a good demand
for strictly desirable killers. Anything
answering to that dlscrlptlon sold very
radlly at steady to stronger prices. On
th other hand, the common to medium
grades were less active and certainly no
better than steady. There were western
ewe good enough to bring $5.25 with weth
ers as high at $8.60.
It will be understood from the above
that the sheep market t this point Is
In a good healthy condition and entirely
satisfactory to the selling Interest.

CATTLE There wa a very moderate run
of cattle this morning, only about 100 cars
Deing on sale, after allowing lor moss
hipped through and only stopped for feed
and rest.
The most of th cattle offered were corn
fed steers, with a very light sprinkling of
cows, heifers, feeders, eto. There waa an
active demand for th desirable grade of
beef steers and the market on the good kill
ers was strong to luu higher. As high a
$6.86 was paid, this being the highest price
paid for cattle on this market since U03.
The common to medium grades were no
more than steady.
There was no change In the cow and
heifer market price remaining about
where they were last week. Every one la
awaiting the settlement of the controversy
between packers and commission men,
which 1 liable to occur at any moment.
When It due take place there Is one dan
ger to be avoided and that Is the sudden
flooding of the market with cow stuff.
There were very few atockers and feed
er In sight this morning, but what few
there were sold very readily at good Arm
prices, at least the desirable kinds."

NEW YORK, July (.The movement of
gold from this country to France, which
ha been In progress since early In May,
will be continued today by the engagement
by Laiard Fn res of $1,250,000 and by Gold
man, Achs A Co. of $500,000 for shipment
tomorrow. The exportation of gold Is at
tributed by exchange spert to th
attempt of the Bank of France to re
cuperato Its gold reserve, which ha been
lessened by the withdrawal of Russian de
posit from France. A year ago the re
serve of the Bank of Franoe was About
$55,000,000, but at present It Is about $30,
000,000 less than that amount. . Sine April
! Franoe has taken about $3,800,000 from
America, whllo $3.0(0,000 ha gone to London
and (l.ttO.OOO to Holland. New York ex
change houses express the opinion that
I th movement of gold from this country
to France I likely to continue until the
demands of tha Bank of France are satis
fied, as that Institution Is making tha ship
ment of gold profitable by paying Interest
on tt whlle In transit serosa the ocean.
Having once re-established Its reserv at
the figure desired., the Bank of Franc
will probably discontinue such Interest and
the shipment will stop.
