NEW YORK. July 1-The cash reserve showing In the bank statement was from llO.ono.tno to tl2.0Ki.0u0 away from the pre liminary estimatea, the Ii.000.0o0 cash de crease comparing with an expected In creaae of Sd.uho.WO to over $7,ouO,(i(X). The loan Item, at the same time, showed a contraction of 110.81 4.i0, the resulting scal ing down of deposits helping to restrict the decline In surplus to 81.tj3o.025. but leav ing for that Item only i-S,250. The loan showing, following a heavy contraction last week makes It evident that corporar Hons depended on the market much less than, usual to finance the semi-annual dia bursmrnts, having apparently accumulated caah for that purpose, which was placed temporarily In call loans and recalled for the purpoae of the payments. The clear ing house banks still hold 830,762,900 of fovernment deposits, compared with 831,276, i last Week, so that small progress has been made In meeting the requirement for return of government deposits to be made on July 10. No coherent explanation was offered from the huge discrepancy in the cash showing. One suggested factor waa an accumulated efct of the recent gold exports, which have not been adequately reflected in the bank statement up to this time. A more probable explanation was the Interrelations of the banks and trust companies, the end of the half year be ing a period important for a showing of cash reserves by the trust companies for window dressing purposes. The exhibit wss not -taken seriously as a reliable ahowlng of the actual operations of the week. The stock market practically ignored It. plac ing more reliance on the downward ten dency of call money rates as an Index of actual banking conditions. The notable strength of foreign exchange rates was also Ignored In the stock market, although It was believed to point unmistakably to a resumption of gold exports next week. Amalgamated Copper waa the market leader. The whole market roee substan tially and closed active and buoyant. Total sales of bonds par value, 8526,C00. The Intervention of a holiday In the middle of the week, as usual cut down the receipts very materially, so that the total has been very small as compared with previous weeks. On the other hand, as compared with a year ago, there waa not so much difference. Under the Influence of the more moderate receipts cattle advanced rapidly during tha nrsi naif of the week and are at the close safely 25& 400 higher than one week ago. The seneral run of nreltv fair to eood cat tle have advanced only about 25c, but sonic of the less desirable grades which suffered the most decline ths week before have shown more gain than this, the advance on that kind amounting in some cases to fully 40c. The market, aa a wholes has been In a very satisfactory condition, the trade on moat days being reasonably active at cur rent prleea. There is a consuming demand of fair proportions and the future of the market is apparently dependent entirely upon the supply of cattle. Aa the trade generally is looking for only moderate re ceipts the remainder of the corn-fed season, fairly good market is anticipated. The cow and heifer market continued about the same all the week. Packers be ing out of the market, left the demand very limited and more or less uncertain. As a result there ' was hardly enough doing 'to really call it a hiarkot, and hence It would be a difficult matter to quote It either higher or lower. At the present writing prospects are very favorable tor the speedy settlement ot the question In dispute between packers and commission men. A joint meeting of pack ers and representatives of tha different ex changes was held In Chicago Friday, 'at which terms of settlement were agreed upon. It only remains now for the different exchangee to ratify the terms of agreement. A meeting for that purpose has been ar ranged for Monday afternoon. Until every thing is definitely settled the only safe tol- Icy for shippers la to hold back their cow stuff. Quite a number of atockers and feeders were received during the early part of the week and the trade on that kind of cattle was slow and weak, owing to the fact that the demand, as usual this month, was lim ited. In fact, very lltle activity is antici pated for the feeding division until ranare cattle begin coming freely. BEEF STEERS. N. Av. Pt. No. At. ELX MONTHS SHOW INCREASE Wholesale Houses Say Tear la Likely to Bo Most Prosperous la Their History Crop Prospects I nap roved. Usual holiday dullness marked the week's trade with the local wholesale houses, a condition whluh was not disappointing be cause It was expected. At the same time retail trade throughout the country was excellent and this means Joy later on for the wholesaler. Houses which have made inventory for the flrst six months of tha year And that their trad showed a large Increase over tha same period fur laat year. Crop pros pects are brighter; wheat Is showing up more satisfactory and farmers are getting the weeds out ot their corn, whluh la grow Ing fast. In view of these conditions and the heavy spring trade, Omaha a lobbing business this year promise to be Uie hesvtest In Its history. The dull season in the hardware trade baa arrived and there Is no heavy demand for any one line of goods. It Is too early by four weeks for fall shipments and of course all the big orders on summer goods went out long ago. Second orders on sum mer articles of all kinds are what keep the hardware men busy at present. Prices are at tha top and are stationary. On feature ot the business Is that the demand for builders' hardware runs steadily alung. There la considerably difficulty In securing goods from tha factory. Big Harvester Trade. Implement jobbers have little to com plain of. They say that, for some reason Which It Is hard to explain, the harvester trade Is the heaviest in five years. Hie thresher trade la opening up well and heavy orders are coming In high grade stun. A heavy fall trade in drills Is anticipated, owing to the experience of the farmers that drilled grain stood' the dry weather this spring better than seeder grain. Buggy bualneas has been good, and was especially so just before the Fourth, when many orders cam to ship high priced vehicles by express. Fall wagon business Is Just beginning to open. It was expected there would be but a light trade In hay tools, but the heavy second orders have been surprising the jobbers. The second order trade In cultivators was disappointing. Boot and alio men welcome tiie hot weather, as it will insure them lata orders on summer goods. Heat ts welcome, because the spring waa so cool. All of the manufacturers remark on the firmness ot the hide market. Certain interests sem to be In control ot the situation and there la no indication that lower prices are coming. The situation In California canned frutta holds much of Interest for the dealer at f resent. Despite the foot that soma ot he packers have already announced open ing prices, there has been a alow movement of goods. Goods are sold ahead, however, and It Is reported that many canner have already sold up to the limit of their ca pacity. Reports as to the prune situation In Calliornla are of conflicting nature and It Is difficult for those at tha distance to know what to do. Canned Vegetables Scares. Teas of the new crop are on the market. Both Japanese and Chinese teaa are heft at 3 to 8 cents a pound higher than the price prevailing at the corresponding time of last season. The spot supply of canned vegetables Is very light. The single exception Is corn, and this commodity Is controlled by a few operators. For the first time In years there Is no carry-over In peas, beans, as paragus, berries, lobster and apples, while the chances favor a complete clean-up In salmon and tomatoes. Prleea consequently are strong on all spot goods. As to the 1007 pack, packers are showing an Inde pendent spirit and buyers are very cau tious. Cheese has been strong, steadily ad vanclngiln price during the last few we.iks. It now looks as though there will -j no lower prices on this commodity. The con sumption Is gi eater than- usual and offer ings are freely taken at the hlgi prices. The Increase In consumption Is said ,to bo due for tho moat prt to the higher prices which must be paid for meat and farm pro duce, yS" Sugar Is quiet, aa there has been no mar ket In New York since Wednesday and will not be until Monday. An Improvement In the demand Is noticed. Jute was an oft month for the sugar trade, but It Is ex pected business will be heavy In July and August, for or. account of the lack of early fruit tho housewife will feel herself com pelled to can everything In the least suit able which she can get for ths remainder of the summer. Oatlook for Coffee. It Is the eve of the new coffee crop and consequently the situation la quiet. Desir able goods are scarce and firm, but the market Is deluded with a lot of low grade goods which are offered at low prices. The Brazilian government Is carrying about 8,000.010 hags of coffee. It Is gener ally conceded the crop Is smaller than last year. Were It not for that coffee prices would go lower, on account of the carry over from, last season. Fancy groceries for the picnic season are In high demand. Olives, sardines, pickles and other light eatables of like nature are moving out in large quantities Fish, aided by the hot weather, are mak ing great Inroads on the meat trade. Dry- Goods Trade 4sle4). Local dry goods jobbers are busy pro paring for fall business. House trade and order trade have both been very quiet for the last week, particularly on goods for current shlDtnent. Orders have been filled I from various lines of winter stuff aad shipped promptly to the tradn in the far ' western sections. Orders from nearby customers have ben held for later shlp 1 ment. The market continues exceedingly ttrong and a strong advance In the line erf staple prints Is dally expected. Bleached foods have been advanced by the manu- otneera ahnnl t cent fnr medium and ! low grades In the last week and higher prleea on brown goods are anticipated. Collections with the dry goods men have been satisfactory. Paints. Otis aad Glass. For the laat few weeks both the Unseed oil and turpentine markets have remained steady and prices without fluctuation. Ths I market for both producta Is strong There has been no cnangea in tne prices 01 wiuoow glass. WE ARE TALKING! ARE YOU LISTEIiiHG? W hare la our vault the following stocks. Ow elteat a4 sarsaey.
