NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Organised Attempt to Baiae Prices
Strikes a Snag.
FOREIGN CALL FOE GOLD FACTOR
Report that Naval Force ta Japaaeae
Waters is te Be lacreased
Assists ta Caaslaa; the
Reaction.
NEW TORK, July 1 Ths organlxed at
tempt to carry prices of stocks to a h.gher
level encountered obstacles today which
had the erTect of Impairing to some ex
tent the confidence of the operatora em
barked on the attempt. Support of the
market was not absndoned, however, and
a good show of resistance to the reaction
waa made at tlmea during the day.
A prime factor In the doubt engendered
over the feasibility of conducting a pro
longed advance waa the new light on the
foreign demand for gold thrown b yee
terday's oourse of the foreign exchanges.
Today there waa, to be sure, some recovery
In the exchange rate at Paris and some
early decline In the rate here, both move
ments being sway from the point profit on
the gold shipments to Paris. The rate be
came atrong here again later. That the
resumption of the movement might follow
a relaxation In the local money market
waa a general conviction amongst Inter
national bankers. Discount ratea continued
to decline abroad, but there waa also some
subsidence of the new confidence which waa
reported from theae markets lately. Lon
don sold stocks In this market again and
Pari sentiment waa aomewhat disturbed.
The weekly atatement of the Imperial bank
of Germany reveal the severest atraln of
the aeml-annual settlements there in a de
crease of $34,266,000 In cash on hand and
in an Increase of $7.035,W0 In outstanding
loans and of $86,466,000 In the noto Issues.
These figures represent requirements now
met, but a necessary period of recuper
ation from the strain of meeting them Is
to be npposed. The forthcoming report
of the Bank of France will be looked for
ward to with even greater Interest to se
cure light on the probable demanda of the
bank for gold In the prooeaa of recupera
tion. Money -on call here oontlnued light,
but did not touoh the high figure of yes
terday. Large amounts of the matured 4
f er cent bonds were presented at the sub
reaiury for redemption and the routine
operations of ths sub-treasury are also
yielding a cash gain to the bank. The
Interior movement of currency also may
be expected to be seasonably In favor of
New York. The threat of gold exports
upon sny decline In money rate ervea
a a balance to the advantage of this
proapect.
The Japanese question asserted Itself to
some extent In the market again, the effeot
being more pronounced on American in
foreign market than in New York. The
published report of the Intention to
strengthen the naval forces of the United
States In the Pacific waa the Immediate
occasion for the expressed anxiety. Some
attention was given to Intimations of an
early presentation of the Interstate Com
merce commission's report on the Harrl
man Investigation. The government crop
report on condition of cotton waa suf
ficiently qualified by the action of the cot
ton market. Tha disappointing allowing of
Improvement aince tha preceding monthly
report helped to depreea some of the cot
ton carriers, although St. Louis Southwest
ern was conspicuously strong. United
States Steel rose against the early de
pression In connection with rumors con
cerning the coming dividends such as us
ually circulate on the approaoh of the
dividend period. Some distrust was aroused
amongst tne speculative louowing Dy a
resort to advertising methoda on behalf of
the purchaae of stocks on ' the part of a
supposed leader In the recent movement.
The reourrent depression of the tone of the
market was In force at the time of the
closing.
Bond were irregular. Total sales par
value, $1,028,000. United State bond were
unohanged on call.

buyer very long to effect a olearanoe. In
other word, It waa a good, active mar
ket, with prices strong to 10c higher at
least. Among the offerings were some
very well finished beeves.
Only a few scattering load of cows and
heifers snd a few odd and end were on
ale. The market wa without any note
worthy change. The deadlock between
commission men and packer itlll con
tinues. There were only two or three car of
stockers snd feeder In the yard and they
brought about the same prices as yesterday.

HOGS Receipts of hoss were the laraes
that they have been at thla point aince June
20 of last year, when 291 cars were received.
This of Itself wss a bear argument for buy
era, but In addition to that there was ths
further fact that all other river markets
reported unusually heavy receipts.
With heavy recetpta tn sight and lower re
ports from other market points, packers
were able to force a decline of 10c. While
the market waa not active, there waa a
fair movement and the most of the hogs
changed hands In fair season. Toward the
close, however, prices eased off and ths
market became very dull and right st 16o
lower than the good time yesterday.
