CHICAGO CHAIN AND PROVISIONS
Prat area of (ha Trad In and Closing;
.." Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, July 1. Influenced by higher
prices for wheat at the principal European
grain market, the market here today was
strong, Liie September delivery closing at
net gain of 14.0. Corn was up HSHc
pats were Vert,o higher Provisions were
Hti6o to lOdjUfco higher.
Unfavorable weather for the crop In
France, England and Germany was the
chief cauno of the advance In the conti
nental wheat market. The local market,
besides being bullishly affected by the
strength abroad, was also strengthened by
weekly statistics and unfavorable crop re
(Dorta .from this muninr WnrM'i hin-
f. nta for the week were about 1,000,000 bu.
y aa meui msi wee s movement and tne
it.oount of breadstuff on passage decreased
l,84O,0uo bu. . Harvesting reports from the
south al tjnnUnund t a. allow .small yields.
From the northwest came reports that the
spring wheat crop is making unsatisfactory
progress because of dry weather. Com
mencing with a moderate advance, the local
market continued to gain until the price of
all deliveries was more than 1 cents above
the close of Saturday. Realising sale
rpused a slight decline In the last half hour,
but the market closed strong. Deliveries on
July contracts were 8,O0O,0uO bu., which was
about what had been expected. September
opened iASc to f&io higher at riWMT'ic,
advanced to 9&i)bo and closed at H'u98o.
Clearance of wheat and flour were equal
to 18.40O bu. The visible supply decreased
470,(pO bu. Primary receipts were 890.000
bu., against 66,0U for the same day laat
year. Minneapolis, Tmluth and Chicago re
ported receipts of bSS cars laat week and
3. n year ago.
There was only a moderate trade In corn,
but the market was strong all day. Com.
miaslon houses and local bulls were the
principal buyers, while offerings came
1 inrgeiy from holders. Deliveries on July
Kicontracts were less than had been expected,
at HO.ono bH;, and this had a strengthening
Influence. The sharp bulge In wheat, how
aver, was the main source of strength. The
market closed strong. September opened
a eherle to He higher at 63 to 53'96JT4c,
sold between KI(fiMc and WVe and cloeed
at B4o. Ixx-al receipts were 468 cars, with
M "t contract fraadn.
Oats were active and strong, chiefly be
cause of the strength of wheat and crop
damage reports. Deliveries on July con
tracts were almost 1.000000 bu. September
opened AW,e to Hrio higher at r7HW7So.
advanced to 8RV40 and closed at SSc. Local
reeMnte were 160 care.
Active demand hy short and pit traders,
based upon small receipts of Mve hogs,
liirht deliveries on July contracts and the
strength of grain, caused a strong market
for provisions. At the close September pork
wa up 1vmHo at S1&47H. T-ard was Mp

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
High Rate for Call Money Canm
Trader! to Hesitate.
CAMPAIGN FOB MSE NOT PUSHED
Prices Bid Vp Hjrt Lata in Day
After telling to Realise Half
atdee aod Final Valnra
Are Highest.
NEW YORK. July 1. The first of July
has been looked forward to a an Impor
tant period in financial circle and ha
been the immediate objective of the recent
quiet rrmdest campaign for a rise In prices
of stocks. There waa In conaeouence a
' good deal of taking of stock of opinion
ana leenng of xne puise or senumeni in
f'- neighborhood of the stock exchange
today. Judgment of the outcome was
i.ot nnl and was suspended to come ex
tent owing to one or two complicating
factor In tha situation. The moat Im
portant of these was the failure of the call
money to relax at once. Money rates re
reded In foreign markets, as I usual with
the passing of a settlement period but,
as Is also usual, the effect was belated
here. Money on call commanded a higher
rate today In fact than on Friday of last
week, snd did not relax until late In the
day when stocks rallied. An Installment
of subscription for new Northern stocks
calling for tll.ftX.Ono was payable today,
and thl aggravated the pressure Incident
to the regular dividend and Interest pay
ments, which ar very large.
The Saturday bank statement waa a
clear exhibit of the narrow margin to
which the available resources of the banks
have fallen. The redemption of the mnxured
United Statea four per cents was due to
day, but the effect was not felt In the
money market. There Is indeed consider
able doubt as to how the redemption and
the coming recall of 230,000,000 of govern
ment deposits from the banks, set for
July 10, will balance each other ln the
money market. There Is always a pro
portion of government bonds called for
redemption which are delayed In presen
tation, so that tha redemption process may
be slower than the recall of deposits. Hut
It was on the side of foreign markets that
there arose again todny some misgivings
or a drain which may resist New York
resources. The relaxation abroad finds
many requirements to be provided for. Tho
Ixindon open market Is heavily Indebted
to the Bank of England and when this
debt Is repaid It Is not expected that any
decline in the bank discount rate will be
feasible. At Paris there was a fall today
of a full centime In the sterling exchange
rate. This Is the Index of the ability of
London to divert Paris demand for gold
upon New York. Foreign exchange here
advanced strongly also. International
bankers In New York expressed the opin
ion today that a resumption of gold ex
port to Pari wa a likelihood. That money
rates would relax much In the face of such
a demand seems Improbable. Commission
houses have reported there was some Im
provement In outside demand for stocks
as a consequence of brighter sentiment
which developed In securities markets gen
erally last week. Stocks were for sale
freely to supply this demand In conform
ity with the plans of the professional
buyers last week In anticipation of this
demand. The proportions of the new de
mand also proved mesgre. The selling
to realise was carefully conducted how
ever, and was not pushed at the expense
of prices. The news of a failure of a
hanking house in Baltimore, although not
deemed Important was not a help to
stock.
The renewed strength In commodity
price gave ome point to report of crop
damage. Railroad earning report for
May showed good Increase over May
of last year. It was found easy to bid
up prices late In the day after the selling
to take profits had subsided and the last
price of the day were generally the high
est. Bond were steady. Total sales par
value $1,240,000.
United State bond were unchanged on
call.
The range of prices on the New York
Stock exchange wa as follows:

HOOS The market oneiied 'tills
with buyer having urgent order ln hand
paying stronger price, soma of the first
hogs selling as much as TH&fic higher
than Saturday. Quite a number of the
hogs sold on thl basis, but some of the
heaviest packers were bearish in their
views and war not Inclined to follow th
pac on tha opening. The result wa that
as soon as the more urgent orders were
filled and before a good many seller had
an opportunity to take advantage of th
good opening the trade came to a atand
lllL From that tlm on th market wa
a dead ona. Buyer would not, except at
rare Interval bid steady price, most of
th offers being a little lower than Satur
day's general market. Seller were back
ward about making the concession, but
still the hogs kept selling a few load at a
tlm until practically everything waa
cleared up, the late market being very
low and weak as well as uneven.

SHE IP Ther wa a fair run of hecp
here thl morning, but of the nomlr re

packers, leaving only about a doten cars
on ssle. Outside of three or four car the
receipt consisted of western rangers, some
of them hardly fat enough for killers.
The market as a whols was very (low
and dull. Adrlce from eastern mutton
markets were all discouraging and It was
apparent that packers were not In need
of any great number of sheep or lambs at
tha pretmnt time. Receivers found It hard
