NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Withdrawal of Support of Profes

LONGS TO SELL TO TAKE PROFITS
Market Is Narrow and Close Is Easy,
with Net Losses More
Namerons Than
tlalns.
NEW YORK. June 2.-Tho principal In
terest In today's stock market centered
In the technical position of the niarkt
and the Inferences that might be derived
as to the origin and character of the de- ,
mand which sprnng up yesterday and
started the upward movement of prices. 1
me 'erred wss to confirm pretty oonn
dently the supposition of the professional
nature of the movement. The early deal
Inge today ahowed the market In aktlrul
hands, and the appearance of activity and
strength waa well maintained during the
period of protit-taklng anlea. Later the
appearance was not so favorable, and the
organised support of prices was not pur
sued, presumably because tho process of
realising profits had been succeaafully
conclude.!. The result was a disappoint
ment to a following that had lookod for a
prolongation of the movement over the
end of the month, as It wns expected that
the reinvestment of profits to b disbursed
this month might be the objective In view
by the operators for the advance. The
taking of quick profits proved the greator
attraction, however, ln view of possible
contingencies over the end of the month.
The money market showed no Immedi
ate Indication of coming stringency and
the reaction In foreign exchange which
promises to put a stop to the outward
movement of gold, went further today.
This movement was made much of yes
terday as a reliance for averting the
threatened strsln on the local money
market Today's statement of subtreasury
operations, In fact, showed a loss bv the
bsnks to that Institution, since lait" Fri
day, of Ss.ouu.OiiO, which ts a sufficiently
threatening prospect for the heavv credit
requirements of the end of the half year.
In view of an existing surplus of less than
W.OOO.OOO held by the banks Inst Saturday.
The forthcoming sale on Friday of 329,000,
000 of New York city 4 per cent bonds
came In for renewed consideration today.
The encouraging effect of the success of
Monday's Philadelphia bond sale on the
hopes of a success for the New York of
fering, had passed away to some extent
today and there was renewed anxiety over
the sentimental effect on the Investment
situation of a failure to nlnce the hnmia
A feature In the money situation was the
further easing of discount rates In Lon
don and the continued offering In the ex
change market here of bankers' bills of
exchange for the purpose of drawing
foreign funds for lending In this market.
This movement Is much relied on to ease
the situation In the local market over the
turn of the half year. Beyond that pe
riod, account Is beginning to be taken of
the effects of the withdrawal of govern
ment deposits from the national banks, to
the amount of 83(1,000,000, which Is set for
July 10. There has been a declining tend
ency In the treasury's figures of the out
f deposits with national banks,

reports and this may have conduced to
the late reaction In stocks. It had much
more tho appearance, however, of natural

and of a demonstration of the continued

a Wednesday; at the same time there was a
great plenty, considering the condition of
th market. Th trade a a whole waa very
alow and unsatisfactory.
There was a fair showing of fair to pretty
food killers among the receipt of steer
this morning, but that faot wa no Induce
ment to buyer. It wa evident right from
the flrat that buyer had made up their
mind to secure the cattle at less than they
paid yesterday. The result was that the
trade waa a drag from start to finish. Th
severe hot weather prevailing ln the east
has cut down the demand for beef to suoh
an extent that th cattle market of the
country are steadily working to a tower
basis for the want of support. Thai ex
filalns why the market ha b en alow and
pwer every day this wee a so far.
There waa no change In the cow situation,
receipt being light and the demand limited.
There were only a few atockers and
feeder In light and they sold In about the
same notches as yesterday, there being no
quotable change In the market.
