The loan contraction helped to scale down

Impression. The engagement of gold for
London was Increased to J1.7EO,0"0 today In
time for the outgoing steamer. Foreign ex
change rates were slronalv maintained to
day, especially for cable transfers In spite
of the supply of that form of remittance
aupplled by the gold shipments. The urgent
demand for cash remittances was attributed
to the approach of the London atock market
settlement regarding which some anxiety la
felt in London. The sustained strength of
foreign exchange caused a conviction that
the gold export movement la to be extended

The following table shows the average
price of hogs at South Omaha for the laat
several days, with comparisons:
week have been about on par with the
week brfore and more than double the
record of a year ago. In addition to the
odds and ends of fed stork usually coming
at this soason of the year there has been
a sprinkling of western wethers The
market as a whole hits been devoid of new
or Interesting features. What little fed
stuff baa been received haa sold at about
the same prices from day to day. On the
other hsnd western wethers, which started
in at very high prices early In the week,
have aold off a little. This does not sig
nify anything, as the market on graaa stuff
hsd not yet been established, and as the
demand was very good It wss only natural
that the first receipts should have sold
very high.
Considering the season of the year the
market as a whole has been entirely satis
factory to sellers.

17-43 Wall Street, Bew Yerk
No mnterlal changes have taken place Ir
the general wholesale market situation
during the last week according to the re
ports of Omaha Jobbers, but the general
tendency of prices appears to be toward
a higher level, with the unusual spring
demand continuing unabated. The failure
of a prominent retail dry good house dur
Ing the week did mt have any effect, el
the failure waa due to outside causes and
no apprehension Is felt by local Jobberl
regarding th future outlook for trade.
The failure, or rather voluntary suspen
sion of th firm in question was not seri
ous, as It I generally believed that no
losse to creditors will be Incurred, but It
was th first failure of a large Iwslncsl
house recorded In Omaha for many year.
Lack of sufficient capital to carry on th
business Is ascribed as the cause of th
ruftpetislon of the firm, together with lotsei
sustained from the unseasonable prlu
weather. . .
One of the chief feature oecurtng ounni
the period under review was the return ol
!( prominent lohlwrs and business men 01
Omaha from a trip of nearly 6,i mllet
through the northwest and Pacific ooaal
atnte on a trade boosting tour. 8iteet
days of strenuous work for Omaha, thi '
market town, were enjoyed py tne excur
sionists and It is believed that much gone
will result from the trip. Acquaintance!
wert- formed while fjnroute which will be
of permanent value to the business enter
nrlaa as no other method could hnVe ac
complished. The personal Inspection of tl4
great cities and misiness nouses 01 tne
northwest will also csuse renewed con
fidence by the Omaha Jobbers ns to tht
resources of the country in tiuestlon, and it
Is highly probable that the expansion ot
many Omaha firms Into the territory vis
Ited will be one of th (list important re
sults of the trip. While enroute the Omaha
men were royally entertained and wer im
pressed with the fact that Omaha la uni
versally acknowledged ss the best Jobbing
center In the middle west.
lry goods Jobbers report that trade con
tinues good and that retalleis report un
usually good business since the advent of
warmer and more favorable weather.
Bales of fall goods for later shipment are
also very satisfactory. Cotton goods re
tain their strength, with advances reported
In the wall known brands of ticks, wide
sheetings, bleached nnd brown mtiellns
within the last few days. Higher prices
for staple prints are also looked for. Col
lections have been very satisfactory.
No apecla) change in prices for leather
goods is reported, but the shoe market I
very strong and Jobbers are of the opinion
thnt advances on niuuy lines of fall goods
may bo expected.
llustness during the last month ha been
very large, moro than offsetting the slight
decrease In business reported during th
month ot May, which was Caused by ex
tremely unfavorable weather. Many seo
ond orders are being received for goods for
immediate delivery, mostly summer Una
sued aa oxfords of all leather and canva
stocks. Most of this stuff should hava
lit en sold lust month, but the Increased
sales during the present month have mad
up for anr deficiency existing in the situa
tion during the previous month. Advane
order for fall goods aro being received in
large quantities and many rubber lines of
this class of merchandise are meeting with
reaily and early sale. Collection contlnua
In the best of condition and an improve
ment In this respect ia noted over that Of
the last month.
Hardware Jobber report that nail,
baj-hed wire and smooth wire have ad
vanced t cent per hundred pound during
the last week, dup to an advance In freight '.
rates on these products and not to the In
creased cost of the raw products. All wlra
products have advanced In prloe to an
equal degree, as the rallrosda have In
creased the minimum tonnage for a car
from 3O.000 to 3d,i0O pounds each. Business
continues very largv, particularly In lawn
mowers, scythes anil snaths. No chang
In prices during tin- period In question Is
reported, but dealers complain that much
delay In slilpmenta is being experienced
because of the congested tratnc condition
on nearly all railroads, It taking ten or
