KOSIY C0STJIXI053 ABE QUTXT osse Fewr Exsresseal tkst Tkers Will Be Shortage ( FWsds ts Mast Jsly 1 Rssjslressesta Dow as Are Ilewvy. NEW TORK. June 17. Ths stock market dropped lack today in the apathetic con dition whKh maraed the opeianons last week previous to the Week end revival cf. activity. There waa obvluus efforts on the part cf some of the prolesrijnal interests l get back the shocks, the selling of which male that spell of activity. The slow and spotty prices of today wss the result of no explanatory news except ss negative lnferemes were drawn from the absence of selling pressure, such as might seem to have been warranted by some of the world's occurrences. The dissolution cf the Russian Lun.a was a dis turbing influence but foreign markets seemed not to be disconcerted, although the event has been rather cieariy foreseen. There waa sums selling of stocks hers fur foreign account just at the opening, but the supply thus furnished was not more than was demanded by the uncovered snort Interest. The effect was transitory on for eign markets also, Paris ltslf turning to trie buying side In the London market be fore the expiration of the stock market ses sion there. It is suspected that a perception of coming events in Russia has been a prompting motive with the Bank of France in its determined efforts to build up Its supply of gold. Paris secured none of th gold arrivals In London, the Bank of ESig land ahsorbkr.g the whole surplv. Sterling exchange rc.se a fraction In Paris. Foreign exchange here continued to advance, how ever, and touched the highest level of ths year, leaving open the prvspect of further engagements of gold for shipment to Psiis. The local money market showed no further signs of constriction today. Last week s preparations for the hesvy disbursements f Saturday, including the Standard oil v P and th P'ment of an Installment or sulcriptlor.s to New Southern psclhc .referred stock would naturally give piae to some relaxation this week with the dis tribution and reharklng of these funds, but solicitude Is still felt over the meetinc of tle July requirements In view of the low present condition of the New Tork banking surplus and the practical certainty that a considerable additional amount of gold will withdrawn in time to reach Paris for the semi-annual settlements there The i.markf? Moderats receipts, good demand and fa vorable advices from other selling points combined to make a very good market on beef steers this morning. Tha trade was active, with piicea on good cattle at least luc higher than last week. As packers all seemed to have liberal ordera. tha offerings for the most part were cleaned up in vary good season la the morning. As high ss So.tu was paid for a Choice bunch of steers, ths highest cf any day since last Decem ber and. excepting that month only, tha highest of any uay sines 1M. whan cattle on this market touched SS.15 In July and August. Good heifers and fat young cows on the belfer order sold quite freely at very satis factory prices, but. as was ths rase all last week, the inferior and common kinds of cows were very slow. Stockers and feeders acid In about the same notches as last week. The receipts were very light, there being comparatively little on sals.
