CHICAGO ft RAIN AND PROVISIONS
Ken tares of (he Trading; and Closing;
Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, June lS.-Followlng a 1-cent
decline early in the session the local wheat
market rallied sharply on covering by
shorts. The close was fairly steady, with
m oepiemoer aeuvery snowing a net
gain of Vtbc. Corn was up (&e. Oats
were a shade lower. Provisions were
10 cents higher.
The downward plunge of wheat prices
at the start was due to general selling,
brought out by continued excellent weathsr
over the entire wheat growing sections of
the United States and Canada. Commis
sion houses flooded the pit with offerings
on stop loss orders and local and outside
longa sold freely. During the first hour
the feeling in the pit was very bearish.
About the middle of the session sentiment
changed suddenly owing to the aoDear-
ance of a btimher of damage reports from
Kansas. The gist of this news was that
hot winds are preventing the proper "filling
ut" of the maturing grain. Shorts be
came active b driers, which oulcklv forced
prices more than tc above the low point of
the day. A large part of this gain waa
subsequently loat on renewed profit tak
ng. The close waa falrlv ateadv. Beo-

Renewed compjlcatlor.a in Russian politics

this market In fact continued firm today.
The batik statement revealed a larger
decrease In cash than had been estimated,
and as there waa no loan contraction to
reduce the deposits, the already narrow
surplus reserve was still further depleted.
The loan Item, It was believed, did not
fully reflect the demands upon the banks,
In view of the heavy payments which fell
due today. Many dividends were payable
today. Including the Standard Oil, Consoll

there was besides payable the first In

The effect on the loan Item of the hanks

CATTLE There were not enough cattle
on sale today to cut any figure In the
trade. The receipts for the week have been
very moderate, showing a falling off as
compared with last week of about 8,000
head. Still, receipts have been about on
a par with a year ago.
Moderate receipts of cattle, together with
a good demand on the part of both packers
and shippers, has kept the market In a
very healthy condition all the week. All
kinds of cattle have been fully sieady.at
least, with the better grades strong to 10c
higher. As usual this late In the season,
a good many well finished beeves are com
ing forward, the top for the week being
$6.35, the high price of the year.
The situation as regards cows and heif
ers has not changed any this week. Hoth
packers and sellers are standing pat in
the contest over tho method of selling;
so that the packers are entirely out of
the market. The buying has been limited
all the week to shippers, speculators and
country butchers. Thla means that the
demand at best has been limited, but,
more than that, the demand has been nar
rowed down principally to strictly good
oows and heifers. Medium and common
cows have been neglected all the week
and have on some days been practically ,
uneatable, it nae neen more a question or
securing a buyer 'than a mntter of price.
Until thla question la settled shippers
should keep their cows and heifera at home.
Blockers and feeders have been in very
light supply all the week. In fact there
have not been enough cattle of that de
scription on sain any one day to really call
It a market. The few warmed-up and half
fat cattle that on ordinary seasons are
sold for feeders have been taken by the
packers to be used In place of cow stuff.
There Is some little Inquiry on the market
for feeding cattle and a few cattle of that
description would undoubtedly have sold to
very good advantage, the feeling being
strong.
HOGS There was a slow, but about
steady market down In ths hog division
this morning. Light and medium weight
hogs were in the best demand and tli.y
were the first to sell, bringing practically
tho same price as yesterday. Hons hav
ing quality und not too much weight sold
largely at $f..65. with qi'lte a sprinkling on
up to $j.90, with a top for full loads at
$1.92H. Heavy hogs were especially alow
and they were the lam to sell. While a
good many ot them also brought steady
f rices salesmen In some cases thought
hey had hard work to get out quite as
well as yesterday and they were quoting
the market barely steady or a thaile easier.
Aa receipts were light most everything
changed hands In fair season In the morn
ing. Receipts of hogs this week have been
about on a level with the previous week,
but considerably smaller thun a year ago.
Prices went down hill rapidly during the
first four days this week, the market being
quoted lower each duy. The bottom lai
touched on. Thursday, when hogs sold on
an averagu, at the lowest point since last
September. On Friday there was a slight
reaction, leaving the market at the clone
of the week 2ua26c lower than one week
ago.
