"If contractors and architects knew more of the difficulties of the furnace and heat ing man there would be better houses con structed with less expense and less waste of effort," said Thomas V. Cox, 917 Far nam street. Mr. Cox referred particularly to the placing of a large central beam In tha floor of most houses. "The result of this la," ha said, "that when the furnace man comas to place hla pipes Inside the wall of the house which Is set Immediately over this central beam he haa to cut through the beam, thus going to a great bother, Incurring waste of time and leav- Ing tha beam In a weakened condition. There would seem to be no end to the use fulness to which concrete is to be put. Most of the Omaha plants are experimenting- more or less along lines other than building and foundation blocks. Hitching and fence poets, porch pillars and garbage boxes are some of the latest products of the Nebraska Concrete Reinforcing com pany's plant. This plant, by the way, lias a very unique system of curing their blocks by keeping them for at least twelve days under a constant spray ot water which it la claimed secures perfect crystallisation of the cement. Thla may furnish the room for the fire-proof cottage, and now what must be found to make the house thoroughly fire-proof is a substitute for wood to be used in floors. Of course, in large buildings there are many substitutes, but none of them satisfactory for homes. Wood, treated with chemlcala. may be made lire-prnof, but the process Is to? ex pensive. What we are looking for is some thing as cheap as wood, yet not Inflam mable, and the man who can discover the new mater'al can go a long way toward completing the cheap fire-prof cottage. There Is a certain met ropolitan air about the city flats as well as Its beautiful and up-to-date suburban homes.' J. L. Baker, who has recently returned from a trip to New York, relates an ao count of experiments being made In the manufacture of materials to be used In the construction of smnll dwelling houses of moderate cost In a manner to make them strictly fire-proof from the siding boards and yet to permit their styles to conform to those now In use, where wood Is the principal material used. The experi ments have reached a point where they are said to be successful In almost every es entlsl point, but some breaks in the chain must be filled before the owner of a cot tage can sever his relations with the fire Insurance companies, v "The latest step In the direction of the cheap fire-proof house," said Mr. Baker, 'Is the manufacture of Joists, studding and ratters from fire-proof material. The new device Is composed of a coating of gypsum and paper pressed around a centerpiece of wood. This wood Is one inch by half an Inch In width and the surrounding material forms a piece 3x3 Inches.
