At no time alnca Omaha haa been city
haa there been auch activity aa now pre
vails One of the notable features of tha
activity la that the greater number of
buildings under way are for homea. It
haa been eatlmated by the building: depart
ment of the city that at least 1.100 new
homea will bo added to the city's total aa
tha reault of tha aummer'a campaign. Thla
la moat encourntrlns;, aa taken In connec
tion with the reault of the Inst two ses
aona It will mean that nearly 8 000 new
homea have been constructed In Omaha
during; that time, a great atep In the direc
tion of housing the 30,000 people who are

The last week has been one of great ac
tivity among the home builders. Though
:he real estate market was quiet and thera
were few transfers of property compared
with tha preceding weeks, the home bulldera
did not cease their activities and con
tractors and laborers of all kinds were

model after which to build a much larger
church In Kearney- speaks well for the
taste of Omaha people In building and for
the architects of the city. F. O. Kerns
of Kearney waa In Omaha last spring soon
after Bt. Mark's Lutheran church waa
finished. He and his wife admired It and
learned the neme of the architect. After
their return home word came to the

Adapting an old adage to hla buslnesa,
U - hardware and heating man says. "In
time of heat prepare for cold." Therefore
the present season when most people are
not appreciative of the comforts of a
warm homa, but only of tha discomforts of
a hot one, wise people are Installing their
furnaces and heating plants for next win
ter. J. W. Moore. 1643 North Elgteenth
street reports eighteen plants installed this
year. He expects to put In not less than
sixty planta within the season. Mr. Moore
olalms to be a pioneer In bringing the
pries of hot water heating within the reach
ot the owner of the small home, prices
ranging from 1200 to $300 for houses of
from five to nine rooms.
"If contractors and architects knew more
of the difficulties of the furnace and heat
ing man there would be better houses con
structed with less expense and less waste
of effort," said Thomas V. Cox, 917 Far
nam street. Mr. Cox referred particularly
to the placing of a large central beam In
tha floor of most houses. "The result of
this la," ha said, "that when the furnace
man comas to place hla pipes Inside the
wall of the house which Is set Immediately
over this central beam he haa to cut
through the beam, thus going to a great
bother, Incurring waste of time and leav-

wars. He has won every step of his pro
motions by hard, active service, and with
all the strenuous years of his service
carrlea his 67 years with the vigor of a
man of 35.

World for Month of
April.
According to the monthly report of the
Department of Commerce and Labor for
April, which has Just been received,
Omaha stood fourth smong the grain
markets of the world In the total shipment
of grsln and sixth In receipts for the four
months ending with April 1. In shipments
Omaha was passed by Chicago, St. Louis
and Minneapolis. In receipts Omaha waa
exceeded by these three cities and Mil
waukee and Kansas City. The total re
ceipts for the four months at Omaha for
the month was 2,flna,B00 bushels, which
was over 800,000 bushels more than for the
corresponding month last year. The ship
ments amounted to S.373,000 or about
00) bushels more than for April, 19P& A
similar Increase Is noted In the report for
the four months ending with April.
In receipts and shipment of corn,
Omaha stood third for the four months
ending with April, Chicago and 8t. Louis
alone exceeding 8,196,119 bushels receipts
and the 8.610.000 bushels shipments during
the four months. In wheat Omaha stood
sixth and In oats fourth.
A marked increase In the receipts and
shipments of cattle to and from the
Omaha market Is noted In the report.
In April, 1905, the receipts were 70,280, In
19", 86,599 and In 1907. 105,478. The ship
ments In April, 1905, were 19.219; In 1906,
14,030 and In 1907, 22.470. Hog receipts
show a falling off compared with last year,
the receipts being 206,000 in 1906 and 193,000
in 1907. Shipments vary little being 3,061
in W06 and 3,806 In 1907.

The question of what is to be done with

The defenders of the boards say they often

dence of F. H. Cla'rldgn at Blair, quarter
sawed oak and poplar t mill work and In
terior finish for the Oeorge V. Loom Is flats,
Thirtieth and Mason streets, quarter-sawed
oak; mill work and interior finish for J. E.
White's residence. Thirty-second and Doug
las streets, quarter-sawed oak.
Among the Jobs for business houses
by this concern are six miles of
mouldings for the Nash buildings on
Ninth street; an up-to-date set of cigar
fixtures for Cole-McKenna company in
the Paxton block, all made in ma
hogany, marble and plate glass; new
store front and show window for the same
company, mahogany, marble and plate
glaas; mahogany, marble and plate-glass
cigar fixtures for the new Rome hotel.
There would seem to be no end to the use
fulness to which concrete is to be put.
Most of the Omaha plants are experimenting-
more or less along lines other than
building and foundation blocks. Hitching
and fence poets, porch pillars and garbage
boxes are some of the latest products of
the Nebraska Concrete Reinforcing com
pany's plant. This plant, by the way, lias
a very unique system of curing their blocks
by keeping them for at least twelve days
under a constant spray ot water which it
la claimed secures perfect crystallisation
of the cement.

J. L. Baker, who has recently returned
from a trip to New York, relates an ao
count of experiments being made In the
manufacture of materials to be used In
the construction of smnll dwelling houses
of moderate cost In a manner to make
them strictly fire-proof from the siding
boards and yet to permit their styles to
conform to those now In use, where wood
Is the principal material used. The experi
ments have reached a point where they are
said to be successful In almost every es
entlsl point, but some breaks in the chain
must be filled before the owner of a cot
tage can sever his relations with the fire

"The latest step In the direction of the
cheap fire-proof house," said Mr. Baker,
'Is the manufacture of Joists, studding and
ratters from fire-proof material. The new
device Is composed of a coating of gypsum
and paper pressed around a centerpiece of
wood. This wood Is one inch by half an
Inch In width and the surrounding material
forms a piece 3x3 Inches. Thene are not

Over Thomas Anderson,
Killed by Car.
Accidental death due to his own careless
ness, was the verdict of the coroner's Jury
In the caso of Thomas Anderson, killed by
a street car Thursday noon near Sixteenth
and Clark streets. The evidence showed
everything was done by the car crew that
could have been done to avoid the accident I
and that Anderson's fall under the wheels !
was due to his own carelessness.
Anderson lived at 1823 North Se"nteenth
street, and leaves a wife and two chil
dren. , The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock '
Sunday afternoon. Rev. Mr. Hult of the
Swedish Immanuel Lutheran church to
officiate. Interment will be at Forest
Lawn cemetery. '
