SPECULATORS ARE WAITIN0 I.ara Uemail for Panats to Meet Jaly Reejalremeats Caases Trad era to Pear Sqnees la Money. NEW YORK. June 13. Ths apathy of the stock market became extreme today and reached a stage of absolute stagnation In ths afternoon. Dealings were little more than half as large as yesterday. Even the professional traders desisted from their futile efforts to effect any movement of prices. There was nothing In the news that Induced any operations In stocks, either on tha huytng or the selling side. Possible unfavorable factors are taken suf ficient account of to refrain from the pres ent purchase of securities, but they are not sufficiently threatening to Induce any dis position of holdings at present prices. The existing deadlock In the market Is the re sult. Some admonitory Influence toward abstention from operations ts found In the outlook. Tha conviction Is growing that special car will he required to meet the July 1 requirements with a damaging pinch In money resources. The decision of the secretary of the treasury to withdraw 8a. flnO.OnO of government deposits from the banks on or before July It) was not re garded as likely to aggravate any strin gency on the 1st of the month, as the re demption of outstanding government 4 per cents will recoup the money market. Def inite settlement on the method for con ducting this transaction comes as a relief to the banking world. Another reult ex pected to flow from the Intention of the secretary of the treasury Is to check the outward movement of gold. Today's state ment of the Bank of France shows an In crease In gold holdings for the week of 87,67O.0no and a loan contraction of noarly I10.ii00.ooo. The gold holdings are still far below and the credits In excess of those for this time last year, and liquidation, especially of Rio Tlntos for Paris account In London, continued today. Discounts were firm also In the Paris and London markets. The rising rates for money here, however, will tand to obstruct a further outward movement of gold. Weakness In the London copper market was an Influ ence In this market today, helping to keep the copper Industrials heavy In tone. Two small failures In the conclusion of the Ixindon stock market settlement and a failure on tha Philadelphia stock exchange with some sensational features helped to deaden the Interest in stocks. The local tractions were subjected to a brisk attack, based on reports of declining earningn and on talk of an Inquisition Into the. affairs to be expected from the coming ubllo utilities commission for New York state. The decision to pass the dividend on the preferred stock of the United .Rail way Investment company wa an outcome Of the labor conditions In San Francisco. The Improved crop reports were received with satisfaction n financial quarters but were powerless to stir the market from Its lethargy. Subscription - warrants for new stock of the northwestern Paelflcs made some sharp, declines, reinforcing the .pes simistic views expressed by the chairman of the board of . the Great-Northern over the credit outlook for the railways. The day's changes, small as they are, are quite generally declines, evidencing the heavy undertone of the dull market. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, f,ooo.
