A mood of depres sion crept over th stock msrket asin to day which efforts to throw off proved un sviJllns. The trading was largely In pro fessional hand and tne movement of price wa under suspicion of exaggeration by the effort of this class to further their purpos of getting anion sufficient to oner a proni on operations. The conse, unre waa a rather erratic movement of prtcea and abrupt fluctuationa on comparatively small dealings. The opposite policy of the trad ers led to sudden shirtings of position in the market without maintaining any ground for king. The constant change Inus in volved gav suggestion of lata of convic tion on the part of the operatora. There waa some disposition to attribute the recurrent weakneaa to the Important failur in th contracting business an nounced this morning, although the effects of this were slight aa far as surface Indica tion went. The decline at the opening, which was attributed to this cause, did not go far before effective support waa forth coming. Th dimensions of tbe liabilities Involved In the failure, however, made It Impressive. The Incident gave rise also to much discussion of Its possible symptomatic character. Ita significance aa an Indication of shortness of capital waa obvloua. The example wa lessened in Its fore by ths fact of the large outlay by the Involved company In permanent Improvement work at a time when capital waa specially dim cult to secure. The implied suggestion that th financial position waa such as to ham per Improvement work waa not hslpful to speculative sentiment. A mora Influential factor In th weakness of the market was the bad Impression caused by the acerbity of public discussion In Japan In relatione with the United States. No actual happenings wer reported to ac count for the feeling, but there was much attention given to the subject In the finan cial district which found its reflection in the study of ths comparative naval forces of the two countries and of the vulnerable positions In the case of an outbreak of hostilities. Japanese 4Hc declined to V4 in this market, but the other Issues were unaffected hers, although some heaviness waa reported In Japanese Issues abroad. Parla also resumed the liquidation of cop per stocks In London. The rate for the approaching settlement In London was calied stiff, but discount yielded there. The money msrket here grew perceptibly atronger aad opinion gained force that a r1?6,.bfo.re i end ot th year la a likelihood. The announcement of the com ing offering of 229.tiO0.O00 of New Turk City bonds emphasised this belief. The periodi cal disbursement to be made on July 1 this year are unusually heavy. The action of the wheat market conflrmed yesterdays view of the government crop report, that It refuted the extreme appre hension which has been held regarding the crops. 8tocks failed to benefit from this. Ther was a momentary rise In prlcee when ! .w" announced that Governor Hughes w .T',tcT1 thJ New Yort -cent fare bill. Also about 100,000 acres of partly cut-over lands containing about 350,000,000 feet of pine and hardwood timber; seven large modern saw-mill plants with a daily capacity of 1,000,000 feet of lumber. Our appreisal tf ' tki prtttnt cash markit valut tf tht frtptrty tearing this tend issui it $19,261,167.00. Thia appraisal does not include the value of the standing timber on the partly cut-over and hardwood lands covered by this mortgage, nor the value of the lands for agricultural purposes when the timber is removed. The body of timber covered by this mortgage is one of the largest and finest tracts of pine timber lands under one owner ship in the United States. The mortgage requires, under careful restrictions, a deposit with the Central Trust Company of Illinois, Trustee, of $3.50 per thousand feet for all timber manufactured into lumber. This will result in the payment of all of the outstanding bonds long before the timber covered by the mortgage has been exhausted, without taking into account any security afforded by the value of the saw mills and other property included under the lien of the mortgage. The net earnings (profits) of The Long-Bell Lumber Company for the year ending January 1, 1907, after crediting stumpage account $4.00 per thousand feet, were $2,330,488.25, tvtr ru' and tnt-half timet the largest annual payment of principal and interest. The average net earnings (profits) of The Long-Bell Lumber Company for the past three years were $1,629,679.03, over three times the interest charge on this bond issue. , The Long-Bell Lumber Company has a tapiul and surplus f $15,632,203.23; has been established thirty years and possesses the highest credit.
