The wheat market today opened easier
because of good weather conditions tn the
west. Later, however, a complete reversal
of sentiment waa caused by the Kansas
tate crop report. It was rumored yester
day that the report would show a percent
age of 11 on June 1. It showed a percent
ace of W, which was lesa than points
ij'Kher than yesterday's prediction. This
nerenee was not sumclent to strongly

from White House Conference.

NEW TORK, Jone (. The toe market
community waa Inclined to draw wide
deductlone from the conference at the
White House laat night of members of the
national administration to discuss the re
sults of the Investigations held by the
Interstate Commerce commission lnte the
affairs of various corporatlona and rail
road combinations. The common assump
tion In the financial district was that a
moderation of the policy of prosecution
of corporations was to be Inferred aa In
contemplation.
The response of prices Indicated that
the Harrlmsn group was regarded aa
most Immediately Involved In this de
cision. The feeling Is general In the
financial community, however, that a
large portion of the difficulties of secur
ing capital for railroad extensions and
general Improvements have been directly
due to the discredit thrown upon Incor
porations In general by the attitude of the
administration toward these bodies. There
s a deep-seated sentiment In all street
that a moderation of governmental se
verities towards corporatlona would
operate materially to facilitate the rais
ing of needed capital. The poor bank
statement was a temporary offset to ths
nfluence of the Wuhlnrtno rennets. T k
known movements of money during the
week account for only about half the loss
of over I. 000.000 In cash holdings, as
the 13,600.000 gold which goes out today
is not supposed to figure In this week's
statement, but to be reserved for appear
ance In next week's return. The lost
Increase, although slight, helped to swell
the deposit Item and the reserve require
ment, with a net result of rutting down
the surplus reserve more than half. It
is tne opinion that further gold will o
out to Paris next week, although the ex
change rate at Parla on London advanced
again today and narrowed the margin of
prom on snipments or gold from here.
Prices recovered after the hesitation
caused by the bank showing and closed
firm, but rather below the best prices.

ket. ii'.e recelpta for the week show a
very heavy gain, being double the receipts
of last week and larger than a year ago
by over lO.OOO head. The arrivals have con
sisted principally of beef steers, there being
only a very small sprinkling ot cow stufx
and feeder a.
The receipts of beef steers being so lance
In connection wltl- 'he fact that prices ad
vanced 40u0o las. eek made buyers feel
rather bearish and there waa an Inclina
tion throughout the week to pound prices
each day. On the other hand the demand
proved to be very rood, and while the mar
ket would generally open alow to a Uttle
lower It cloaed up better each day. so that
at the close of the week good to choice
kinds of cattle are fully steady with the
close of last week, with medium kinds pos-
siniy a little easier, cut not to exceed kw
lower for the week. Light cattle were es
pecially good sellers all the week, being
taken by packers to use In place of cow
stuff.
The deadlock between packers and com
mission men over the cow question has con
tinued all week. The country has sided
1th the commission men and has kept
cows and heifers st home, so that not
enough havs been coming In to really make
a market- The few loads .received have
sold at fair prices, speculators and ship
pers together with local butchers being the
only buyers. Until the matter is definitely
settled the marketing of cow stuff Is at
tended with great risk.
very few stockers and feeders have. been
received during the week. Quite a num
ber of cattle that might under ordinary
circumstances have sold as feeders have
been picked up by packers at better prices
than feeder buyers were willing to pay.
Such cattle aa have been sold for feeders
have brought good strong prices.
HOGS Hogs sold 60 higher and the mar
ket was fairly active at the advance so
that praotlcally everything changed hands
oy 10 o clock in tne morning or soon trier.
The hogs sold very largely at 66.Ou4id.10, as
against 66.dui6.06 yesterday. As high fs
66.30 was paid for good light hogs, aa
against 6616, the top yesterday.
The receipts of hogs this week have
been very liberal, showing a heavy gain
over last week and a small gain over a
year ago. With large receipts to help them
buyers were enabled to force values down
ward during the first half of the week,
hogs on Wednesday selling 103no lower
than ths close of the previous week.
Since Wednesday prices nave gradually
firmed up. so that the close today was
only about tHc lower than the cloe of Us
week.

WYOMING RIVERS ARE HIGH
Heavy Saews of Winter Have Be
aalted I at Floods Ceaerally
Over. State.
CHETENXE. Wyo, June 8.-9peclal.V-.
Reports received here from Plnedale snd.
vicinity reveal what an Immense amount
of snow fell In the mountains during ths
winter. The creeks have all risen higher
than ever known before. The Kpmmerer
stage road has been almost a sea of water
and mud and pssaape almost Impossible.
The Ham's Fork went on A rampage at
Kemmerer and for One week tt overflowed
and washed out all the wagon roads, so
that no wagons could pass between that
point and Frontier. Ths Fontanelle val-
ley was a sea for nearly 300 yards, with
water running all around the bridge, which
was hobbled by posts betng driven Into
the ground above and barbed wire used
to tie It fast. La Barge creek during Ha
highest stage ran four inches of water
over the stage wagon box. making It neces
sary for all mall and packages to be piled
upon the seats. The dry draws all run
mean little streams to their drains, but
left the mud. The Plneya were out of
their banks and the bridges required, rr
pairing and watching. The Cottonwoods
held their can, but spread well out over
the valley. The Green river went beyond
bounds and for a while It was feared that
the new bridge would go out. High water
will be expected until well into the sum
mer.
TYPHOON SPREADS DISASTER
Caroline Islands Almost Entirely
Wrecked by March Storm
nd Tidal Wave.
SAN FRANCISCO, June l The first de
tails of the havoc wrought by a typoon
and tidal wave In the Caroline Islands In
the latter part of March were, brought hers
today by Rev. G. H. Jagnow, a missionary,
who arrived on the steamer Coptic. A few
days before Easter Sunday, a typoon
swooned down upon the Islands known as
the Olcal group and completely wrecked
them. A tidal ware that followed not only
swept over the land but It practically
burled It under a blanket of sand from ths
ocean's bed. This wave rendered 1.600
people homeless and 350 men, women and
children were drowned on one Island alone.
Twenty-fire persons were lost on another
of the small Islands. Ths typoon lastej
three days. All ths trees and shrubbery
were either uprooted or burled In the sand.
When ths tidal wave occurred and swept
over the land, hundreds of natives were
saved by swimming about until the waters
receded. The German authorities sent tv
steamer with supplies and with these ths
Datives expect to subsist until they caa
produoa their crops.
