Welch's double In the sixth Inning and
bla triple In the eighth Inning drove In Bel
den each time, making the two runs which
won the game Saturday from Des Moines
at Vinton street park by (he score of 2 to 0
a. ahutout for Omaha and against Clark,
who on his previous visit had held Omaha
to two hits, both being made by Hagan.
Testerday he held the Rourke family to
four hits, but Welch hit In the pinch both
time with Belden on second and two out,
and won the most Interesting game of ball
played at Vinton street park this season.
(The Champa made twice as many hits as
Omaha, but they fell down at opportune
times, and the record of nine men left on
bases shows tho holes Hall got himself Into
on several occasions.
The game looked very much like Des
Moines until that sixth Inning, for the
Champa were bitting Hall quite freely, but
Welch hit the ball In the nick of time and
turned the tables. Belden drove a grounder
to Ooehnaur, who proceeded to fumble It.
Franck sacrificed Belden to second, Autrey
mad an Infield out, and then Welch fooled
them by hitting one to the left field line,
Corkhlll waa playing off to the left and
could not reach the ball until Belden had
cored.
In the eighth Belden opened out the In
ning with a single and was again sacrificed
to second by Franck. Autrey flew out to
Corkhlll. and again did Harry Welch drive
the ball hard. This time It went further
toward middle field and the doctor waa
perched on third when the ball waa re
turned to the diamond, with Belden across
the plate.
Hall Has Mark Trouble.
Halt had a hard row to hoe during the
for part of the game. The second Inning
came close to being disastrous, for two
singles and an error were made. Corkle
struck ' out and Andreas Singled. Hall
caught Mm napping at first. McLaughlin
waa given a life on Dolan'a error and
Ooehnaur hit safely' and stole second.
Teager waa at bat and the fana were
. anxious. Mac though Teager could not
bit It out so tried to steal home, but was
caught at the plate.
In the fourth a hit, a sacrifice and a
base on balls made things lively for a time,
but - two popupa ended the Inning. The
alxth waa the real heartbreaker, for It
came In the first half of the sixth before
Omaha had scored. Hoggle bunted and
Austin let It roll, but It stayed In fair
ground. Dexter walked and Corkhlll sacri
ficed them each on a - bag. Andreaa flew
to Graham, and with a man on second and
third Captain Franck stopped the game
long enough to see who was to follow
McLaughlin at bat. When he found It was
Ooehnaur he ordered Hail to pass Mao and
the baaea were filled. That waa a critical
moment for Franck, for had Gochnaur hit
the ball he would have' been condemned
. by the 1,000 fans, but Franck showed hie
.' Judgment was right when Ooehnaur popped
an easy one to Graham, putting the side
ut :
Fatlle Rally by Champa. ,
, Dea Moines tried to rally In the eighth
Inning, but two singles, .a sacrifice and a
stolen baae were not enough to give them
a mark on the tally sheet.
