EXPOET OF GOLD CAUSES HALT BngmaTessetnt ef gS.gOO.OOO Car Paris Saurnrlea Deoleie Pita Aeravta Alrastt aa4 Class ta 8tee4r. NEW TORK. Jane 1 An active absorp tion of stocks on a lirlrg scale today was brought almost to a standstill by the un expectedly heavy engagements oi gold for export to Parle tomorrow. Conditions In the exchange market bad prepared for an additional shipment tomorrow, but so lart a sum ss $3,000,000 was- surprise. The movement was the more Impressive by reason of the failure of the foreign ex change market to show, any effect, as Is usual, owing to the custom of selling ex change bills against gold shipments when they are made. The rates today, however, were firmly maintained and It was evident that the outward movement of gold was to extend over Into next week. The Paris market stand under obliga tion to NewvTork for $4.oifl,a on subscrip tions to New Hsven notes which mature next week, but this obligation seem to have no effect In checking the flow of gold from her to parte. Today's $V 600,000 en gagements will gnot figure in tomorrows bank statement. Nevertheless, the sub treasury's absorption from the money mar ket up to Thursday night. principally en account of gold withdrawn for export, had amounted to $4.87,fx0. This wa offset to only a small extent by the balance In favor of New Tork on the otirrency movement r1th the Interior, that balance having fallen considerably below the figure tor several weeks pt. This course of cur rency was pot effective on the rate for call loan today, the tons In that depart ment of the money market remaining steady. Payment was made today also of $8,000,000 Installment of subscriptions on Oreat Northern preferred new stock. This heavy drainage of cash reserves while so many eager requirements for new capital purposes remain unsatisfied Is regarded as something of an anomaly and has Its ef fect on speculative sentiment In iplte bf the absence of effect Immediately In the money quotations. Much Importance also Is attsched to the government crop report to be given out on Monday ss factor toward settling eonvlc. tlons In the crop conditions. Reports of low condition estimates of the winter wheat crop today made bv stste authori ties In Kansas and Kentucky served to hake to some extent the confidence that ha been felt that Monday's government report would show marked Improvement over the previous monthly estimate. A feature of the day was the number of rumors of new railros relations which came Into circulation. Apparently the plan for transfer of control of the Boston A Maine to the New Tork, New Haven Hartford gave the Impetus to the rumors. Many of them centered about a supposed transfer of control of Delaware A Hudson, but none of them received any official sanction. The coalers were all helped by the evldanoe of prosperous conditions In that trade. Included In the showing was the huge Increase In the tonnage of the May shipments over those of May of last year. Reading's prominence In the day's advance waa partly due to this and was increased by rumors of a proposed Increase in the dividend rate, also without official sanction. There were continued discussions of reports from Washington of an' Intended conference of government officials to be held at the White House tonight at which it was alleged a decision would be reached a" to .th Prosecution of the Harrlman railroad combination. The market aa a Whole waa In very satisfactory condition so far. as steer cattle were concerned. It wa very evident that packer wanted the cattle thi morning, as buyer Were all out in good season, so it did not take very long to clean up all the beef steer In sight The trade as a whole might be described aa a good, steady to strong and active maket. There was nothing very choice to put a high top on the market, although there were cattle good enough to bring $0 and better. The market all this week has been In very fair shape and although tflere have been weak spots, there has been sufficient strength to make up the little losses, so that desirable kinds of cattle are fully steady for the week. The medium kinds are possibly a little lower, but the loss even on that kind Is not to exceed 10c for the week. Cows and heifers were in lltfht supply, but-the demand was extremely limited, so that sellers were hard-put to find buyers. As a natural result prices were weak and It w-as late before the few loads in sight were disposed of. It Is a risky proposition to ship In sho stuff at the present time. Although there are plenty of orders for stockers and feeders In hands of buyers, there are very few cattle coming with which to All tliem. The fact la the packers are taking all the light and medium steers that would ordinarily go for feeders. Representative sales: EEKF STEERS. NO. IS tl 11 10 61 I SI I 11 1 ...... The market as a whole might be described as a good, active and strong market. The ewee thst sold st $4.60 were out of the same lot that brought $4.00 on Wednesday of laat week, whll the $9.00 lambs sold at $8.60 on the same day last Week. The market all this week ss reported from day to day has been strong and active, with prices gradually tending upward, this too In spite of the fact that neavy receipts at Chicago have weakened the market at that point. Aa compared with the close of last week It Is safe to quote the gen eral market at this point fully 26c higher, with ewes and lambs showing even more Sdvance than that In many cases. Parties having fed sheep or lambs ready for mar ket need not hesitate about shipping In anything of that description to this mar ket Quotations on shorn stock: Good to choice lambs, $7,7&i8.tO; fair to good lambs, $7.0iti7.76; common or cull lambs, to.50y4.00; food to choice spring lambs, $8.oo4.o0; fair 0 good spring lambs, t6.0n4iO.00; cull spring lambs, t4.Kxjii.00; good to choice yearlings, light, $S.i5iV'.2; good to choice yearlings, heavy, $6.604i6.90; fair to good yearlings, $6.004i.8O; good to choice wethers, $t.Ot 6.76; fair to good wethers, $ft.00tf.60; good to choice ewes, $.0&6.6; fair to good ewes, $6.7646.00; culls, bucks and stags, $3,264) $.60.
