CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
P 'ttirei of the Trading; and Closing
- ' Prices ftn Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Juna 8. Liquidation of July
wheat and reports of good weather for the
new crop caused the market to ease off
slightly today. At th close July wheat
was down Corn was MUa higher.
Oats were up Ho. Provisions were un
' changed to 70 lower.
The market opened today with easier
prices because ot better weather conditions
In the west and northwest, lower cables
and world's shipments that were larger
than had been expected. Later prices re
covered on reports from Kansas that the
Treeae ot a week ago had done much dam
age. The bulk of these renorta stated that
the damage to tfie crop had ' been from
y to u pei'. cent. A report from an as
pert that estimated the. tbtal yield of
wheat as 174,000,000 bu. -below the amount
1 named in his last preceding statements
i caused a rally about the middle of the
day. A good export demand was also- re
ported and this added strength to the mar
ket. Later, however, the trading became
lull And the Influences which were In ef
, feet at the opening resumed their sway.
Much i July wheat was liquidated during
the early break on stop-loss orders. The
close was easy, July opened S5,74o lower
at U7o, sold between M'a and tlo
and closed WV lower at KWiWo. Sep
tember opened at e(o, sold between
ftSVfec and VJa and closed tt4rt4o lower at
89&9Hc. Clearances of wheat and flour
were ;qual to 838,000 bu. Primary receipts
were 786,000 bu., against 828.000- bu. for the
lame time one year ago. Minneapolis, Du
iuth and Chicago reported receipts of 447
bars, against 42l last week and a holiday
one year ago.
The corn market opened easy on reports
flf good weather, lower cables and larger
local receipts. The market rallied, how
ever, on reports of a aood demand for ex
port and fair buying by local speculators.
The close was firm. July corn opened c
lower at 63o, sold between 63Kc and Ma
and closed at 63Vu64c. Local reoelpts were
178 cars, with (8 -care of contract grade.
Vhe weather conditions, which softened the
market for whut and corn, also affected
oats. It was reported later that the "green
bug" had been discovered In various places
throughout the state and this, with a fair
DuvlnaT demand, stiffened the market July
oata opened Ho lower at 48Tic sold between
mo and 4930 and closed firm at 46o.
Local receipts were 87 cars.
The provisions market opened ' easier,
lard especially being weak because of of
ficial statements showing larger storks
here and throughout the west Later the
market recovered much of the lost ground
In covering by shorts, At the close July
pork was unchanged at 814.20. Lard was
9own 7Ho at 88.10. Ribs were 2V4o lower
it (8.76.

PACIFICS AND COPPER LEAD DECLINE
ItaUy Rear the Close Is Dee to Bayln
by Shorts Voleme of Dealings
la Ssaall Boads Are
Heavy.
NEW YORK. June I. The tone of the
stock market became weak again today
end heavy declines carried some ot the
moat conspicuous storks lower than they
sold last Monday. The reasons for the
weakness were not very apparent, beyond
the obvious explanation that there was no
demand for stocks. No effective demand
developed at eny time during the evasion
nd bear operators ahnwrd no urgency In
the dealre to cover their shorts until the
final hour of the trading. The amounts
of stocks sold were not larse, but the
entire prostration of the buying demand
left prlcos easily vulnerable to selling pres
sure. The Pacifies and-tha copper !n1ov
trials were the weakest features, althotisrS
the declining tendency of the market was
eomprehenelve. Published reports of as
sertions by the head of the Harrlman
system of the necessity of retrenchment
throughout the railroad world had some
special effect on the stock of that system.
The weakness of the coppers were sutllci
ently explained by the severe decline In
prices of the metal. The New York Metal
exchange also marked down the price of
the metal here. A report from Waahlna;
ton that a determination had been reached
not to puah the government prosecution
as-elnat the Xtarrlmart rflilroad tlAd no
stocks. Railroad traffic officials were quoted
as usual In their weekly reviews of condl-
imiiB 111 iiinir iieiua eiiiii eoi. unpi.w.i iu
concede some falling off In the volume of
freight moving, although claiming; an excoss
still over tne corresponding perioa 01 irbi
year. Railroad earnings reported con
tinued to show an Improvement In the net
returns for April, the addition of Pennsyl
vania to the list, with the first Increase In
net for many months, being regarded as
especially significant on nccount of the
representative character of the system.
Some disturbance of sentiment was due
to the persistent heavy demand for gold
from Purls shipments to that point ar
ranged here, amounting to 82,000.000 and at
London to 82.900,000. It does not appear
that any sinister significance lies behind
this movement, which is most reasonably
attributed to the trade activity In France,
the large demands on the Bank of France
and the low level of Its reserves, the pres
ent holdings on that Institution. In spite
of the accretions of the lest few weeks,
remaining far below the amount held at
this time last year. The flow of gold to
Paris, nevertheless. Is the cause of mts-
fivlngs in other markets, chiefly from the
ear that It registers a knowledge of com
ing political complications not known to
the world at large.
Rates for call loans In this market re
tained the slight advance of the latter
part of the week In view of the poor bank
statement of Saturday and the further
outgo of gold to Paris. Interior money
markets report a disposition to greater
ease. The Incoming reports to the con
troller of the currency of the condition of
national banks on May 22 show a marked
strengthening of position at most Interior
money centers with the preceding call on
March 22. ,
Feeling regarding the wheat crop was
less despondent, but the news of the cotton
crop caused anxiety. Causes were sought
for the weakness of storks nearer to the
stock market Itself and there was a revival
of many rumors previously heard of finan
cial troubles, warded off after the March
slump, but recurring with the yielding of
prices again to the former unprofitable
levels. The lack of confirmation of any of
the trouble rumors as the day progressed
had much to do with Inciting the shorts
to cover more extensively late In the day.
The substantial recoveries as resulting were
well maintained to the last.
Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value,

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were quite
liberal this morning, the oferings consisting
largely of beef steers with quite a sprinkling
of really good stuff.
Buyers were out ' In good season, both
sellers and packers, so that the market
opened early with the more desirable kinds
Belllnff fully steady. There was some
disposition on the part of buyers to bid a
Utile lower, but the demand was most too
good to admit of bearish tactics being fol
lowed to any extent, with the result that
the most of the cattle sold at practically
steady prices. The market waa reasonably
active, so that the most of the offerings
changed hands In good season.
There were only a few loads of cows and
hslfers here and they sold very readily at
good strong prices. Outside buyers and
speculators took them all, as packers were
still refusing to buy, except subject to post
mortem Inspection. This means that while
the few cattle coming are bringing good
prices, the demand Is limited and com
mission men are still advising the country
to hold back everything In the way of she
stuff.
There were not enough stockers or feeders
in sight to make a market, but what there
were sold very readily at strong prices.

TWO GOOD BROTH RECIPES
Easily Digested Preparations Wwrth
Keeping; In Mind for Weak
Stomachs.
Food for Invalids Take stale pleoea of
crusts of bread, the end pleoes of the loaf,
and toast them a nice dark brown. Care
must be taken that they do not burn In the ,
least, as that affects the flavor. Put the
browned crusts In a large milk pitcher and
pour enough boiling water over to oover v
them; cover the pitcher closely and let
steep until cold. Strain and sweeten to
I taste and put a piece of Ice In each glass.
This Is also good warm with cream and
sugar, similar to coffee.
Beef Broth One pound of lean beef, A
piece of bone from the shin of beef, one
half teaspoonful of salt, one quart of cold
water. Cut the meat Into small pleoea,
crack the bone and put all In a kettle and
oover with the cold water. Bring slowly
to a boll, then simmer two hours or more,
until reduced to one pint of liquid. Strain, ,
season with salt and cool quickly. When
cold remove the fat from the top. Reheat
and serve with croutons or pulled bread.
The broth may be seasoned with sprlga of
parsley, a few tops of celery or one-eighth
teaspoonful of celery seed, to be added one
half hour before removing the broth from
the fire. If more nutriment dealred, to
each quart of water add one tablespoonful
of rice, barley, wheat, tapioca, sago or a
slice of toast when the broth Is first put
on the fire to cook. They will then be
thoroughly dissolved In the broth and add
to Its flavor and consistency. The broth
may be made In A shorter time If the meat
la run through a meat grinder; only one
hour will then be required for the simmer
ing. Irish and Scotch Hnmor.
Life Is grave. But It Is a good thing to
laugh. In Ireland the humor Is of a kind
that Is not found beyond the Emerald
Isle. The Irish act as If every one pf
them had been stood on his head bo that
his thoughts would be unusual, and per
haps the same Is best Illustrative of Irish
humor. It Is unusual. The eesentlal char
acter of Irish wit la drollery. But that of
Scotch wit Is Its trory, sombreness. Its
searching character. To put your finger
on Scotch humor and define tt Is like catch
ing the fragrance of a flower In the hand.
English Intelligence hardly ever gratpe It.
An Englishman merely suspects It. It la
thorough and Irresistible not fun, drollery
or wit. To Illustrate: An Englishman It
always "comme 11 faut" at a wedding. In
dress, speech, etc., while the Scotchman
takes the lead at funerals. A Scotchman
never knows how to blend, aa It were. He
can't express his thoughts. Black Is his
congenial color. His face accords but it
Is not black In color. It Is the atmosphere)
of the awfulness of life In him. He create
the atmosphere desired for a funtral laa
