liice,:ta of Brain at the Omaha Grain
exchange during the month of May Je
treasfd sllolitly an compared with May,
1306, according to the monthly report of
the secretary of the Grain exchange, but a
substantial Increase ' I shown In total
transactions for the first Ave months of
this year as compared with the corespond
1ns period of last year, which Indicates the
Omaha market In maintaining It prestige
as one of the largest primary grain mar
kets of the world. A peculiar feature of
the grain trade at Omaha during the last
month Is thnt corn receipts decreased from
1.983,31)0 bushels In May, 1906, to 1,364,400
bushels last month, while the receipts of
wheat for the comparative periods In
creased from 214,800 bushels to 463,300 bush
els, or an Increase of over 100 per cent,
According to Its geographical situation
Omaha Is naturally one of the largest corn
markets and the business In wheat has
been comparatively small until the present
year, but great strides have been taken In
the wheat trade and If the present paca Is
maintained Omaha blda fair to become a
great wheat center.
Total Receipts I rarer.
Total receipts of , grain at the Omnha
market last month were 2,Sr!2,R00 bushels,
as compared with 2,711,700 bushela during
May, 19ofi, but this decrease In receipts
was due to abnormal conditions prevailing
during Vf last month. The market has
been In a turbulent state on account of
unsettled crop conditions and little Inter
est lias been manifest In the corn market.
Corn receipts decreased, but . much corn
Is now befhg held In elevators and ty
farmers and probably will be shipped to
the market during the ensuing month.
A gratifying Increase In the amount ot
oats received during the last month Is
noted when 6K.200 bushels were received,
n Increase of 90.000 bunhels over the re
celpts .during May of last year.
Total shipments from Ofnaha for the
month ending May 31 wefe 3,049.500 bush
els, against 2.878,000 bushels during May,
1903. Shipments of wheat during the com
parative periods were 814,000 bushels,
gainst only 281,000 bushels, and com ship
ments decreased from 1.852,000 bushels to
1,251,000 bushels, Which waa due to tha light
receipts.
Statistic Are Favorable. ' 1
Statistics for receipts and shipments of
grain at Omaha for the five months end
ing Mny 81, as compared with the same
period of 1906 are more nearly Indicative
of the relative Importance of thla market

ended were 17.IMo.9nO bushels, an Increase
of over J.OOO.ono bushels over those of 1906.
The principal Increase reported waa In
receipts of wheat, which Increased from
1.120.7CO bushels In 1906 to 2,118.400 bushels
this year. Receipts of corn decreased, on
account of the smaller receipts last month,
from 10.247,600 bushels In 19S to 9.466.800
bushels during the five months ending Fri
day. An Increase of to per cent In thsre

4,S!'3,6"0 bushels last year.

Novel F.fTect In landscape ftardenlnsr
"I shsll introduce this year," said a land
scape gardener, "two noveltlns on the
grounds of a Newport millionaire a floral
clock and a revolving flower bed.
"The clock Is to be a circle twenty feet
In diameter. The face will be of grass. The
hands wlil be of white carnations. The
numbers will be red roses, pnnsles, helio
trope and so on. This clock will work
electrically, and, of course, the mechanism
will be concealed. Will It keep good time?
Oh, the best. I made an experimental one
last week that only varies eighteen seconds
a day.
"The revolving beds will he a feature of
a sunken garden. There will tje four of
them, each twelve feet square, and they
will revolve electrically at a revolution a
minute.
"These novelties will be the first motion
pieces ever Introduced Into American land
scape gardening." Philadelphia Bulletin. .
